Red Scattered Quilt

When I made this quilt, I just went through my red and wine fabrics and randomly cut the pieces needed. Can you guess how old the fabrics are in this quilt?
Would you believe that I pieced this quilt in 2015 and shared a picture of it when I did a post on the Scattered quilt in different colors. Even then I was working more with batiks and this quilt top has none in it.
I used premium muslin for the sashing, all the other fabrics are over 25 years old! This photo really shows the colors the best.
This is a photo I took last week before I started quilting it. It was so cute to see Rusty lying under the longarm.
Why I bought a longarm
Quilt tops like this are the reason I purchased my longarm this year. I have quilted large quilts on my domestic 15-91 Singer sewing machine but I’ll be the first to admit that doing small quilt projects is a lot more fun. That is why I have a bunch of quilt tops to finish.
Using magnets to hold the front of the quilt on the longarm.
I am still learning how to load my quilt tops and making sure the backing is large enough. I almost ran out of backing when I got to the end on this quilt. I like floating the quilt tops and also using magnets to hold the quilt top in place.
Trimming the Red Scattered quilt
I always love the trimming of a quilt! I had enough fabric left from the backing to use for the 2½” binding. I just cut strips of all the different fabrics I used on the back.
I’m not really a fan of making the backing out of a bunch of different fabrics. It is a great way to use up some more of those 25 year old fabrics though!
Rusty on the quilt
I always have quilter’s emailing me asking that I remember to add photos of Rusty. He did a great job of posing on this quilt. Can you see all the grey around his mouth? He turned 8 in November.
Save this for later!
Don't worry, I promise not to spam you.
Quilt Keeper
Here is my quilt hanging on the Quilt Keeper. This is such a great way to show off your quilts. I did a whole post of the Quilt Keeper if you would like more information about it.
Scattered Quilt Pattern
The Scattered quilt pattern has 5 different sizes included but it is very easy to make your quilt bigger or smaller. I didn’t add any borders to this quilt as it is large. I can’t remember why I made it 72 x 102. It is 9 rows by 11 rows.

Lovely quilt and the pattern would be a good one for showing off larger-patterned fabrics. I just love how devoted Rusty is to you!! So glad Jo fostered him and you adopted him. His eyes look so much better now.
Connie, it may have taken a very long time to finish this quilt but it is so lovely! Not only lovely but seasonal too. Congratulations on a beautiful finish. Rusty looks so cute with his little grey beard.
Awe Rusty really enjoys his job of modeling the quilt. That’s a very interesting pattern. The fabrics are unique especially the color/ shades. Every decade has its own identity.
Beautiful job
Anyone who doubts that dogs can smile only need to look at Rusty on your quilt! If that’s not a dog smiliing, I don’t know what is.
Love this pattern in all of its variations.
I love the red! I bought this pattern years ago, and made several quilts that are still in active use, and I’m quite proud of them. Seeing your red beauty has me inspired to make another. My skills have progressed and my stash has improved, so it’s time!
I have purchased your scattered pattern and am looking forward to making it. I love the red one and especially the pieced backing. Thanks for great ideas you share!
Thank you for this post (and all of the others), Connie. I really like your Scattered quilt, and I love seeing how relaxed Rusty looks in these photos. I am so happy that he has you and your husband to love and care for him!
Carol
Very pretty quilt Connie! May I ask where you got your long magnets?
I just love all the space you have for sewing and quilting, and you have windows for natural daylight. My sewing room is a bedroom that is 10×12 and its really stuffed with supplies, machines lots of fabrics etc. I like your updates on your fur babies. Merry Christmas. Deb
Very pretty quilt! I love the way Rusty is grinning at you while you’re taking his picture….very cute! Merry Christmas to you
Hi Connie
Love your red quilt and the back is also very lovely.
So nice to see Rusty so well. We lost our Golden Retriever 3 weeks ago, he got quickly so bad that we had to give him peace. We also have a Westie he is 8 and I thought that we mayby could have him for “many” more years, but he has now been diagnosed with severe rheumatism in his 2 front legs, so it might not be for as long as I hoped.
I wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
I am making king size scattered quilt of florals in my stash. It is going to be so pretty.
The Red Scattered Quilt is beautiful!
Hi Connie, I love the scattered quilt. They are just my colors. You would never know the fabric was that old. I don’t use Muslin. I don’t like the texture of it. On your quilt however, it looks really good with the vintage fabrics. Rusty looks like he’s right at home on your bed with the quilt. My Jimmy John is now 13 almost 14, and his sister honey will be 11 in January. My guys are getting old just like me. Merry Christmas to you and Bilder Bob and Rusty of course. Ellen in Memphis.😎❤️
That turned out so well, Connie. The reds are beautiful, old AND beautiful. Rusty even has a smile on his face. He’s the perfect quilt dog!
Hi Connie
I love the red and white quilt! Here in Canada we generally do our Quilts of Valour in red and white and I believe this pattern will be perfect for all the red fabrics I have been collecting over the last few years.
Also, I adore the picture of Rusty on the quilt where he actually looks like he has a grin on his face.
Thanks for all the great photos.
Stay well

Your red Scattered Quilt turned out beautifully. I actually like the backing you made. The quilt can be reversible. Rusty is a good poser.
Rusty almost looks like he’s smiling in one of your pictures! Fun!
Nice work Connie! How are you liking using your long arm?
Red scattered quilt looks very nice, I’m glad you like your longarm. Rusty looks so handsome.
Definitely a keeper. Older fabrics have character, kind of like us older gals. Good job.
Beautiful quilt! I love the colors!
Your quilt turned out beautiful as reds are one of my favorite colors . Rusty is so cute he looked like he was smiling in the first pic on the quilt, So adorable . Hope you and your family have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
The quilt is gorgeous! I really like all the reds with the white. Such a great job of quilting too! I am sure it would have been a “bear” to quilt on your domestic machine. I am staying away from the big quilts so I can quilt them on my domestic.
Connie, Your Red Scattered Quilt is beautiful and inspiring. I have also purchased this pattern and was going to make a small quilt or a runner. Seeing your larger quilt, I may gather some of my “older” fabrics and make a larger one.
Glad you’re having some warmer weather.
Rusty is getting to be a good poser and appears to be smiling also.
What a beautiful quilt! Rusty is so photogenic laying on it. I too, always look forward to seeing Rusty in your pictures. I found some fabric the other day from a blouse I made my mother when I was in high school. Amazing that it was still in great shape.
Well Connie, im very jealous of your lovely weather. All we’ve had for weeks is rain here in the south of England! Love the red scattered quilt and Rusty looks very happy testing it out. He looks so happy since he has been part of your family. Hope you are keeping well and have got your health sorted. Have a happy christmas and all the best for 2024.
