Quilt Studio for 2024

I have been meaning to share photos of my quilt studio since we moved once again. My quilt studio for 2024 is very similar to every one I have had in the past but I think this is the largest.

Quilt Studio for 2024

I have had 5 quilt studios in 5 years! That has to be a record. We have no plans to move anymore and for 2024 I plan to spend a lot of time in this studio and create all kinds of quilt projects to share with you since I won’t be spending time on Realtor.com looking at houses anymore.

Quilt Studio Size

I forgot to mention the size of my quilt studio. The main room is 20 x 30. I also have the storage room and a bedroom downstairs that I use. My office is upstairs.

Nolting Longarm

Last January I purchased a used Nolting Longarm quilting machine with a 12 foot table. I practiced on it but didn’t really quilt a quilt until May and then we dismantled it for our move. I have finished a couple quilts here and really like quilting on it. I have a bunch of UFOs that will get done this year. This is the first thing you see when you walk into my room.

Cutting Table

My cutting table sits in the center of the room. Builder Bob cut the legs off to make the table a comfortable height for me when standing. I can also store lots of projects underneath!

You will always find Rusty close when I’m in my quilt studio.

cutting table and ironing board in my studio

Builder Bob turned his woodworking table into a cutting table for me when we lived by the river. It has been moved 4 times. It comes apart but is heavy and table top is 50″ x 74″ so it is great for laying out a quilt top.

Closer look at my cutting table

I inherited this office desk and bookcase from my daughter when she moved and I have now made it into my ironing board. I really love having a large area and found a wool pressing mat that almost covers the entire table. It is 22″ x 60″. I have a board underneath the wool mat to protect the wood table.

My ironing board table

Most of my sewing is done on my vintage Singer 15-91. That is also a 15-91 to the right. I use it mainly just to fill my bobbins. The cabinets came from Ikea but you can find similar ones on Amazon.

Rusty will sit out in the yard by himself as long as he can see me sitting at this sewing machine. He really is a character! The light over my sewing machine is a Daylight Slimline 3 table lamp that I bought several years ago. I really, really like it.

Support your quilt

I have a table behind my sewing machine and will also set up another one if I am working on something big. When you have a quilt supported on the left and also behind, it makes it so much easier to work on. You don’t want your quilt dragging on the floor. The pink container on the floor holds bird seed so I can watch the birds and squirrels while sewing.

I also just finished the red/black quilted sewing machine cover and will be sharing that in my next blog post.

Back of my sewing table

AccuQuilt Area

I am fortunate to have plenty of room and I keep my Go Big Accuquilt cutter up all the time. Builder Bob started building me a box to sit behind my cutter to catch the dies before Christmas but I think he forgot all about it (also the lights over my longarm) maybe next week I’ll mention it.

I also bought a mini vintage refrigerator this summer that is so cute. It came in handy when we sat out on the patio this summer.

Vintage Singer Sewing Machines

Vintage Singer sewing machines are workhorses! I recently purchased another 15-91 Singer on Ebay and the seller did a fantastic job of packing it. Several years ago I bought one and it got wrecked in shipping. These are very heavy machines. If you are thinking about one, search for StixandStuff on Ebay as he was wonderful to deal with.

I’m not really sure why I thought I needed another 15-91, I guess I need to stay off of Ebay.

Singer Featherweight sewing machine and another 15-91 Singer sewing machine

I also pulled out my Singer Featherweight sewing machine. I hadn’t used it in a while and it is always good to use your sewing machines so I have been doing some piecing with it. If you have one and need information or parts be sure and visit The Singer Featherweight Shop (no affiliate). They carry everything!

The Quilt Keeper

That is a Quilt Keeper on the door, I know someone will ask about it.

I have a bathroom down here! You can just see the door before the sewing machines. There is also a large guest bedroom and more crafting goodies are in there.

This side of the room holds my batik fabrics, some of my dies and other miscellaneous goodies. There is also fabric in the drawers and sometimes when I am working on several quilt projects, I will keep each one in a separate drawer.

I had to include a closeup of Rusty, as long as I’m in my quilt studio, he is right by me. He turned 8 last November, can you see how gray his muzzle is? We were so fortunate to adopt Rusty, he is the sweetest dog.

Quilt Storage

I also have a narrow windowless room that I store my quilts, fabric, batting and odds and ends.

I also have a narrow windowless room that I store my quilts, fabric, batting and odds and ends.

Scrap Storage

You can see the drawers that hold my scraps cut into sizes I use. I have a post all about the sizes in my scrap storage.

I also bought a new cutting mat that covers almost all of my cutting table. I also keep a smaller cutting mat handy. I had several people ask about my cutting mat. I purchased it from Big-Mat Rotary Cutting Surface (no affiliate). Mine cost $192.

No Design Wall

You may have noticed that I don’t have a design wall. That is something I have always had and I could make space for one but right now I have a sheet of Styrofoam that I have covered with batting for a temporary wall. It was 8 feet tall but was a pain to move around so I trimmed it down to 6 feet tall and I pull it out when needed. I’ll have to do that and take a picture of it.

Happy New Year!

Your sewing studio is something I aspire to. It looks amazing. I am camping in our Eldest son’s bedroom as he has moved out and am slowly getting it organised. Time is short at the moment so I have to do bits when I can. Love seeing Rusty in your pictures. Our dog, Coco, is always with me when I am sewing too. I think they must like the rythem of the sewing machines. Happy New Year, Susie xx

  2. Scuz me Connie while I wipe drool from my chin. LOL
It’s gorgeous. I’m very happy to hear you will refrain from the Realtor.com website now. I am betting your husband will be thrilled with that news also.

Have fun in the new place. I’m shocked you did not plan another quilt wall in this room. I think that wall near the sliders to the yard would be a great spot for a portable wall you could set up when needed. Or maybe have hubby build a nice wall there that is reversible. Put your clock and other things on one side but with secure attachments so you can just ‘spin’ the wall around leaving those items on one side and then when you turn the other side facing out, you will have your quilt wall. And the other things are safely hidden. If you want to do other things and leave the quilt in progress out of sight, then just turn the “wall” around again.

    1. Hi Vicki, I actually do have a portable design wall that I can use. Remember when I used to have the sliding design wall with shelves behind it? My husband is happy that I’m no longer house shopping!

  3. Hi Connie and Happy New Year. Thanks for your lovely tour of your sewing room. Wow, what space you have. I can’t get over how quickly you organized your room. Looking forward to what you create this new year. Thanks again and know that you are a blessing for so many.

  4. Your quilt room is wonderful! It’s the best space I’ve seen! What a blessing! Thank you for sharing & pet Rusty for me! 👍🏻🥰🐶

  5. First hugs to sweet little Rusty. What a faithful companion, I can’t have my Lola with me because she is a doodle and as they do, she constantly retrieves. I thought she would outgrow it by age 5, not to be.
But wow, this space is absolutely fabulous. I remember your sliding design wall by the river and still keep trying to find a way to replicate it. I am anxious to see this new one.
Your footprint and organization, are, as always, outstanding. Understanding our own work process, no matter what the size of your space is essential to productivity. Natural light is wonderful with the wall color. You have hit Bingo with this one, thanks for sharing.

  6. Karen Poole says:

Wow! What a great space!! I would so love to have a studio! My sewing “room” is tiny! Smallest room in the house. But at least I have a room! That’s more than I’ve had for most of my life!!
I love your pictures, your set up, your patterns and tutorials.

  7. Looks like you have another business opportunity – designing work spaces! Absolutely stunning! My workroom looks like – well let’s just say “messy” with piles everywhere! But I am getting better about not starting a project until the last is done. Thanks for the inspiration!

  8. What a beautiful space you have, Connie, for all your lovely creating! Happy New Year!

  9. Cheryl Wilkinson says:

Beautiful! You’re so lucky! I have studio envy but got lots of organizing ideas from you. And was that Mr. Mickey on that wall hanging? Hope you all have a wonderful 2024.

    1. Thanks Cheryl and yes that was Mr. Mickey on the wall hanging. Another quilter sent that to me and I love it.

  10. Janet Anderson says:

You have a very nice space. I have a small former bedroom which I now use for quilting. I do mostly small projects as a fairly new quilter. Your site is my favorite as you have many small projects available either free or to purchase such as table toppers, table runners, and even the pumpkin coasters I made this fall. Looking forward to more quilting in 2024!

You can never have too many sewing machines. I am almost coveting your Singer Featherweight. I used my older sister’s to sew on in high school and I have wanted one ever since. 24. Gorgeous studio!! I have a treadle Singer that is electrified. It was my hubs grandmom’s, manufactured in 1924. Tomm it will be 100 yrs old, soon to be brot upstairs and sewn on. Rusty looks like you just want to lay down with him and cuddle. Thanks for all your patterns and beautiful ideas. Have a very Happy New Year and blessings for the whole year.

  25. That has made me chuckle Connie, a sewing room with a guest bedroom and a bathroom. Just think you could stay there for days with little Rusty for company and Bob the Builder bringing you meals 😄😄. HAPPY NEW YEAR !!!

  26. Wow! Your studio is amazing! I live all your quilts displayed around the room. I am also a huge fan of old Singer machines. As you said, they’re workhorses. Happy New Year! Thanks for your blessing g posts. I do enjoy them.

My husband was sick for 3 years and passed in July I haven’t sewn for all that time. My son and dil helped move me downstairs. My room isn’t set up yet. I hope to get quilting again this new year. I still have the dog that looks like Sadie and a newer black one. He is such a companion. Thanks for all you do! I have made quite a few of your quilt patterns and won a first place ribbon on one of them.
Have a wonderful New Year! Keep healthy and put out lots of new quilts.
    Hugs

Your new quilt room is absolutely amazing!

  32. Your quilting studio is just beautiful! Enjoy it! Happy New Year!

  33. Connie,
Hello from south east Michigan, metro Detroit area. I have been reading your blog for a short time only. I’ve loved all your Christmas projects.
Your sewing studio is marvelous! Just marvelous! I have a bedroom converted to a sewing room. I have a very comfy chair and lamp area for embroidery work. It’s not nearly as large as your space but works for me.
Rusty is a very lucky dog. My daughter has 3 rescue dogs. I don’t have a dog but keep my son’s golden doodle when he’s at work, so I guess I have partial ownership!
    Happy New Year!

  34. Carmella P Hoffman says:

I LOVE your room, and am envious that I don’t have that large of a space!! I do have an entire upstairs of my house I could use, but that would require going up and down all the time and losing time with my Grandkids and other family! My husband gifted me a remodel of my little sewing room by taking out a wall to a little (6×8) bathroom that we never used, so I will gain a little more space and have brighter lights and another window so I’m happy with that!!! Congratulations on the latest move, and hopefully the last move you have to make!!!

  35. Connie,
You certainly have a well-deserved “dream studio”. The large open space with all the natural light plus all the storage is so wonderful.
Have a blessed and healthy New Year!

  36. Vicki in MN says:

Your new studio is amazing!! I loved checking out the arrangement.

  37. Linda Jennings says:

Connie, Happy New Year to you and Bob also and Rusty of course. I miss my Happy following me also. If I was in the basement on my long arm or binding my quilts on my Janome 6500 MC she was right with me even though she had a hard time getting back up the stairs. If I was sewing in my sewing room upstairs she was right behind my chair. I envy your sewing studio all in one room. I always enjoy the pictures of Rusty and Mr. Mickey.

  38. diane from MN says:

What a grand quilting room. Room for everything!
Love seeing Rusty and he sure enjoys being with you.
Amazing with all your moves compared to mine but
you got what you wanted and that’s what you should have.
Have a couple patterns of yours and hopefully I can get
down to sewing them into a quilt this coming year.

  39. That is an amazing studio, Connie. You’ve definitely saved the best for last. Enjoy your sewing this year!

  40. Judy Halstead says:

Wonderful room. Now that I’m older I live in a senior apartment but I have a quilting corner and most of my projects are small or come from kits. I feel so much comfort when I quilt. Thanks for all you do and the nice patterns My next project is the canyon table runner that you recently sent

  41. Christina says:

Hi! Christina from SW Virginia. Happy New Year! You certainly have an enviable sewing space. I always enjoy seeing photos of Rusty j(and Mr Mickey).

  42. Brenda @ Songbird Designs says:

What a wonderful quilt room, Connie! One day, I hope to have everything in one place like you, and with lots of storage! Right now, my machine and cabinets are in what used to be a formal dining room, I cut on my tall and large kitchen table, and my long arm is in the garage bedroom we built for my mom after my stepdad passed. It’s close together, but would be sew much better all in one room with lots of storage for everything!! I know you enjoy being in your studio! Give sweet Rusty a pat on the head for me! Happy New Year!!

  43. Pamela J Richards says:

OH my — your quilt studio is to die for!!
Love it — we just downsized to a much smaller house
I still have a large stash – but limited floor space – although I don’t have to move anything once I get it set up!! I too have a wonderful husband!!

    1. Hi Pamela, the main room is 20 x 30 and has 2 lights. Bob will put lights over the longarm and I always use smaller lamps by my machines. So far with the windows, I have enough light.

  44. What a nice trek through your wonderful sewing room. I do enjoy gleaning ideas from others. You must be thrilled to have such a delightful space to create in. Thank you for sharing and hope your 2023 is filled with joy and creativity.

  45. Pamela Meyers Arbour says:

I sure enjoyed a walk through your studio. I think that windowless storage room was the icing on the cake. I would love to have something like that! You have certainly made the best of your space. Congratulations and thanks for sharing.

Oh, Did you say how large the area is and I only saw one ceiling light. Is that enough? just curious because I have lighting problems and can’t seem to get the right amount of light.

  46. Deborah Robinson says:

Oh my…Thank you so much for a wonderful tour of your 2024 quilt studio! It’s absolutely breathtaking! Everything about it I love. You’re very lucky. I’d get lost in there daily..lol
Thank you for also sharing pics of Rusty..he’s definitely a real sewing buddy. 😉 Happy New Year to you & your family

  47. Thanks for posting pictures of your studio. I love seeing how others set up their creative places. Can you please provide me with more information about the quilt on the wall behind your newest Singer 15-91 and the featherweight. The quilt has a bargello look with circles. Is this one of your patterns? If not, any information would be greatly appreciated. The theme next year in our local guild is bargello, so I’m looking for variations of this pattern. Thanks so much Connie, have a wonderful 2024 creating and doing what brings you joy!!

  48. You have the quilting studio of my dreams! So organized & tidy too!

  49. Good Mourning , Happy New Year . Love your sewing room , It`s awesome . So happy Rusty found his forever home ,He looks so happy and content with you .
