I thought it would be fun to show you a bunch of projects that I finished up in December. Some I’ve blogged about – River Squares and Broken Herringbone Runner.
When I made my Broken Herringbone blocks there was a lot of leftovers. I’m not going to waste my beautiful batiks so…..I made mug rugs…..lots of mug rugs.
I just start putting the leftover pieces together and keep adding until I get a size I like. Usually 6 x 9 is a good size. It takes longer to put the binding on!
Be sure to check out the red batik table runner and the mini Broken Herringbone mug rug that I also made!
Feeling blue
I thought that was an appropriate title for how I’m feeling at the moment. I had blood work done last week and got the results back which showed my Vitamin D has improved but…..I will be visiting my doctor today as I have Hypothyroidism – an under active thyroid.
I have gained over 30 pounds in the last 8 months even with exercise and trying to watch what I eat. I kept telling my doctor I felt like I was gaining a pound a day. I have also been tired and depressed, which if you have never had a weight problem and all of a sudden do…..that is depressing. For quite some time my joints have ached….I just figured it was….getting old. These are all symptoms of Hypothyroidism.
I have started a medication and have a list of questions for my doctor that I will see today. I’m not happy to have this but I am thrilled to find out what some of the weight gain is from and that I can lose it.
Here is a funny……for 8 months I have been eating radishes like crazy…..probably 4 bunches a week. They are a no-no, so is raw cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower…..all the things I have been eating to try and lose weight, they all cause bloating. Wish me luck in losing some weight!

Your quilt is gorgeous and I love that view out the window in your studio!
I have had thyroid problems for years and I know the dr. I have been seeing doesn't know his stuff because I have also put on the weight over the last 10 years. and I don't just sit and eat twinkies either.
Has your doctor given you a list of foods to avoid to help regulate your thyroid. I would love to have a copy if he has.

Such pretty colors! So glad you have found some answers and you get back to yourself soon. Feeling out of sorts is horrible when you have so many pretty things you want to make!

What a nice thing to have pinpointed your problem, and one that is fixable! How distressing it is to gain weight like that – I can relate. I don't have the thyroid problem, but living up north, I need to take 5,000 units of Vit D a day just to get my levels to the bottom of the normal range. And I'm one to be active outside, too! Hope your doc visit will shed some light for you and you will be on the way to feeling normal again soon. ๐

Great use of the leftover blocks. I love blue batik but I hardly ever purchase it. I am sew with you about feeling bad. Right now I am working on the tough stuff which is recovering from surgery, and once that is better I will be ready to work on the diet and exercise, and probably high cholesterol.

Love your blue batiks and the mug rugs are great! It sucks that you've been feeling so crummy but at least now you know what the problem is and can tackle it head on! All the best to you as they work out your meds & diet. Take care.

I love your mug rugs. I hate binding so much, I've about decided to flip and turn them instead. =) How odd that all the things we'd *think* would be great would be the very things causing more problems for you. I'm so happy you have an answer, though, and look forward to your feeling better!

Your 'blues' are so pretty Connie!!! Hope your health improves quickly!!

Your blues are beautiful! Sorry about all the medical 'stuff'. I've had friends with thyroid problems but once they get you stabilized on the right dosage it all seems to come out okay. I hope it will for you, too. I had my thyroid removed entirely over 20 years ago and have been told it is easier to regulate when your own thyroid isn't tossing out hormones. I took Synthroid for about 15 years and then the drug company lost the battle about not substituting generics. I switched to the generic without a problem.

Oh, I like how your projects turned out! Hang in there, girl… The medicine will help for sure, so will the vitamin D (I take 5,000 IU/ day because mine is super low, too). The weight will disappear very soon as you cut out sugars. I will be sending positive vibrations to your beautiful direction… ๐

Love all your blues! I've had thyroid issues for 30 years now….once they get you regulated there will be improvement. I promise. And once you get on a medication, never ever ever let a doctor or pharmacy change your Rx. Ask me how I know….that is what threw my system out of whack last year. Dang those drug houses!

Connie sorry that you've been dealing with a mystery illness for so long. The thyroid can sure give us fits as we age, many of my friends have this condition and are learning to manage it and I know you will get a handle on it too. How frustrating that weight thing must have been for you this past year not to mention just not feeling like yourself. Hope the doctor can give you the answers and support that you need and if not find another doctor!

Hi Connie! Your leftovers made beautiful mug rugs! I love the batiks, and I know you do too! Great idea to use up the remaining pieces.

Those are beautiful Connie- LOVE the blue. I am sorry about the new diagnosis. I know all about being frustrated at your body. I hope you can get some answers, although you may get more questions for awhile than all the answers you are looking for. Trust me, even if you HAVE had a weight problem all your life, feeling like you're gaining a pound a day and probably are from the meds being taken is just as depressing, if not more. (ok maybe not more, but in a different way). The meds I was taking for Fibromyalgia did exactly that to me. I tried two different ones and then after taking them for a total of two months and gaining over 40 lbs with each and every single one NOT being needed to add to my already weighted back end, I told the doctor I was NOT taking them any longer and would just have to deal with the pain from the disease. Heck, I already deal with tremendous pain daily from both knees, so what's a little more?
It seems as you get older, the meds have more complications with the foods we eat, or we just get smarter and realize these things. I too must be careful with eating things which interfere with my Coumadin, but it's things I LOVE to eat like dark green, leafy veggies. I just tell my doctor if I feel the need/craving to have lots of those veggies which will make my Coumadin not work, then I'll just drink LOTS of wine to thin that blood right back down again. LOL (NO! for anyone reading – that's a joke – I do not do that so no nasty emails please. LOL)
GOOD LUCK Connie! I hope you can at least get some sort of balance along with many answers you are already searching for. I had my doctor check my Vitamin D levels a few years ago and was put on a series of superdoses of that because the blood tests barely registered for mine and even now, I still have to take Vitamin D3 daily to keep them at an acceptable level in my body.
