Christmas Crazy Quilt Placemats
This post may contain affiliate links which won’t change your price but will share a commission. Here is another great quilt project to make for the holidays! I used Christmas fabrics with my Crazy Quilt placemat pattern. These would be beautiful on your table this holiday season!
6 Fat Quarter Christmas Placemats
Pick out 6 of your favorite holiday fat quarters and make a set of 6 placemats. They would be neat in silver and blue too! Little Rusty is fitting right in, lol he wouldn’t look at me but wanted to be close. Then he looked at me and I took another photo but he turned his head and it blurred. I’ll share more about how he is doing later in this post.
13″ x 17″ Placemats
These are made with my Crazy Quilt Placemats pattern, you can see the placemats made with teal batiks in this post. These are so fast and easy to make! My daughter saw the teal ones and loved them so I will be wrapping them up as a Christmas gift for her.
Binding the placemats
Hand-stitching isn’t my favorite thing to do, I am always in a hurry to move on to the next quilt project so I always sew my binding on with my sewing machine. Sometimes I place the binding on the front and sometimes on the back. Normally I cut my binding strips 2½-inches wide.
I have a post about how I add binding to my quilts.
Use a tailor’s clapper
Have you ever used a tailor’s clapper to set your seams? I use one all the time especially when I am ironing my binding down. You just iron a section, place the tailer’s clapper on it and move to the next section, and repeat. It is wonderful for pressing seams on blocks too.
Notice the old iron? I love how heavy they are and the flat bottom. There is no automatic shutoff so you do have to remember to unplug it when done. I looked back and I’ve been using this vintage iron since 2014. A couple of years ago Builder Bob replaced the cord as the old one was worn out.

Update on Rusty
If I didn’t know better I would think that little Rusty has lived with us for a long time. With him being 7 years old and Mr. Mickey is almost 12, they spend most of their time laying around or letting me know when it is time to eat.
Having Mr. Mickey has made going outside to the bathroom so easy! When Mr. Mickey goes out, Rusty follows right behind. He wants back in right away so he can get a treat! Mr. Mickey isn’t really a “treat dog” and isn’t as interested in treats but will eat one if Rusty is close by.
Mealtime with Rusty
Mr. Mickey will not eat from a bowl if he can help it and if a plate moves he panics so the dogs eat on a small rug and I use saucers. Rusty is fine with this.
Mealtime starts out with Mr. Mickey getting his pills which is usually a battle. I try all kinds of ways to get him to take them and lately I’ve been using a small piece of lunch meat with cheese spread in the middle to hold his pills. Now that Rusty is here he is interested in the little appetizer that comes before the meal. I am making him one with no pills and I feed both of them at the same time. Now that Rusty is here, I haven’t had any trouble getting Mr. Mickey to take his pills.
Mr. Mickey barks the whole time I am getting his food ready, somewhere along the way I must have praised him or something and now it is his routine. Little Rusty is starting to whimper and also paw at my leg while I’m fixing their food.
Mr. Mickey has always been a fussy eater and would only eat people food if he had his way. I know that isn’t good for him and doesn’t help his bowels. I always have dry food out but for meals, it is a mixture of Freshpet and Cesar Gourment Wet Food. Wow! I didn’t realize that I can order this from Amazon here in Ankeny!
Rusty is a fast eater, I hope he will slow down when he realizes no one will take his food from him. I sit by them while they eat as when Rusty is finished he looks at Mr. Mickey’s plate. Rusty has really improved Mr. Mickey’s appetite! He would never finish his food but now he is eating every bit of it. Have I ever told you how I have to keep turning his plate so he can reach the food? Yep, he is spoiled.
Rusty sleeps all over the place, right now, both dogs are sleeping in the living room. Rusty also likes to sleep by me while I’m on the computer which is what Jo said he did with her.
Night time sleeping
Rusty has no trouble jumping up on the bed right after I lift Mr. Mickey up so he can lie at the bottom of the bed. Rusty wants right up on the pillow and is there before I get in bed! The first 2 nights Mr. Mickey didn’t even realize Rusty was in bed. Luckily neither dog stays for very long which is fine with me.
Heart Animal Rescue
We are so happy to have Rusty in our lives, thank you Jo from Jo’s Country Junction and Heart Animal Rescue!
Heart Animal Rescue has a Facebook page and it looks like this is where you can find info on the animals they have. Take a look at the miniature Australian Shepard puppies that are ready for adoption. Jo said that Rusty is the father!

I so loved reading about your fur babies, you said the one baby is spoiled, people say that about my 2 fur babies, my reply is, they aren’t spoiled, they are well loved, and obviously your fur babies are well loved also.
Hello
I love this pattern, Crazy Quilt Placemats, and want to purchase it, but I want to know first if this has the cutting sizes in the directions since I don’t have the cutting templates.
Thank you!

Hi Connie,
I was so sad when it was time for Rusty to go to his forever home!!
But then you wrote on Jo’s blog about how Rusty was doing and said you would give updates. My heart was so blessed!! I fell in love with Rusty when he was with Jo!!
So instead of being sad, I’ve been doubly blessed by joining in on your blog and e-mails….I get to keep up with Rusty and you have a wonderful blog and e-mail letters!!
I’m so happy you have Rusty…it’s a win-win-win…….Rusty—You—-and Me :):):)
Blessings.
Carolyn
Thanks Carolyn, I am so glad you are now following me and yes, I’ll always update about Rusty. I am so happy that someone told me that Jo was fostering Rusty and that I was able to adopt him.
You are right, Rusty just looks like he has always lived with you. I am so glad Mr. Mickey and Rusty get along so well. And, Rusty likes your quilts and wants to lay on them just like Mr. Mickey. What joyous Christmas you will have with your new family member!
blessings,
donna

Thank you for sharing Connie… Rusty is a handsome fur baby 😊
I just love your dogs. I have lost 3 of mine in the last 5 months. I knew I had a friend when I saw dogs and quilts!
Thanks for the update – love the pictures of his puppies! Also fell into the auction they have running for the next 1/2 hour or so. Tons of stuff for sale. So are you going to write a book about your puppers? Starting with Miss Sadie, Bless her heart, then Mr. Mickey who has had some amazing adventures on the farm, and finally Papa Rusty and his little ones.
Thanks for the placemat pattern – looks so beautiful in those batiks.
Glad to hear Rusty & Mickey are getting along so well!!! Hope all continues to go well.

Marian, I’m so glad you found another vet who would do the surgery and you can have peace of mind with Maggie!
Dear Connie, So glad to hear how well Rusty and Mr. Mickey are doing. Bella and Luna would eat people food all the time too, but we know it’s not good for them so we have kibble/dry food out for them to nibble on when they get hungry. I have a book that tells me what foods they can and cannot eat, and it’s very helpful.
I wanted to let you know what pet stroller we purchased on Black Friday. I think we paid about $159 on the Black Friday/deal. The company/brand name is kenyone, model C510, Gray and Black. My son Matt put it together yesterday and had no problems. We are so happy with this one because it’s big enough to hold both Bella and Luna. The stroller can hold up to 33 lbs. The whole basket part also lifts out so you can use as a carrier too. It has nice big wheels as well as a nice big bin for carrying packages, purse, supplies, etc. They both had a ride around the house and their tails were both wagging. Happy Holidays!
Hi Roxy, I try and limit people food especially now that we have Rusty. That sounds like a great stroller! Since I recently bought the single I’ll stick with that for now. We just go for short walks in the winter so I won’t use it until spring.
Hi Connie!
I haven’t written in a while, been busy moving to Delaware. You know all about moving! I have forgotten exactly where you are and with the recent devastation of this horrible hurricane, I was concerned about you. I do hope you and yours and these precious fur babies are safe and dry, and you can continue brighten the many lives you touch.
Blessings,
Sue Hammen
Looks like you got a very special gift when you adopted Rusty. And Mr. Mickey has a friend to teach and be a companion. Love your holiday placemats too dear. Merry Christmas…
Love reading your posts and especially about your dogs. So glad Rusty is fitting in well and that Mr. Mickey is accepting Rusty well. It’s funny when you mentioned turning the plate. I do that with Chip’s bowl too. LOL We love spoiling our pets.
That is so sweet! I’m so glad they both have you. It’s OK to spoil them! That’s my story and I’m sticking to it! LOL The placemats are cute too, Connie!
I love reading about your animal escapades. For 11 years we had a cat that needed medication every day and she was a pill spitter too. Our wonderful vet finally found a solution that worked for her and might work with a dog too. We picked her up by the scruff of the neck, lifted her off the floor, and put the pill in her mouth and she’d swallow it. For some reason they can’t spit them out as they are being held that way. You could try it. It sure made our lives a lot easier and reduced the cat’s stress too, which was good as she was being treated for high blood pressure! haha Thank you for sharing you wonderful stories.
Thanks Sue, I can see that working for the cats. Mickey has a collapsed trachea so that wouldn’t work for him. I just keep switching what I put his pills in.
So nice that Mr Mickey and Rusty are getting along so well. Lucky little Rusty has joined a family that give him love and happiness – and lots of nice food. Thanks for sharing Rusty’s settleing story and so nice that Mr Mickey has a happy little companion.
The Crazy Christmas place-mats look amazing with such cheerful colours. This design lends itself to lots of alternative colour combinations. I’m ready to cut mine out in blue/purple batiks. I’ll also make some in black and white. This will be my go-to design for gift making.
Thanks, Connie for letting us know how Mr Mickey and Rusty are getting along.
A happy festive season to you, Bob and your family.
It didn’t take long for Rusty to settle in to his home. Mr Mickey sure is doing so well with having Rusty there. We just don’t know what has happened in their past little lives.
I had a rescue cat, sadly she could not get over her past abuse and had to be euthanized because of her serious biting issues. I did work with the rescue organization, especially after I got a serious infection and had to go to emergency and needed to go on antibiotics for several days. It would not have been safe for them to re-home her.
It is just a sad what people do to defenceless animals.
Doreen, that is awful to think of the abuse that poor cat went through.
Glad to read all is going great with the new dog in the house. Your Christmas placemats are very nice!
LOL. I can tell Rusty is settling in very nicely and learning all the tricks that Mr. Mickey can teach him, too. Connie, I’ve used cream cheese for pills for my dogs for years. I used to say that Jack would swallow a truck if you wrapped it in cream cheese. It’s easy and no lunch meat required.
Aww, you are such a wonderful dog mom. I Love your babies. I have a Sheltie, Malcolm is his name. Thanks for the quilting ideas too.
I’ve followed both you & Jo for years. You are both such nice people. Thank you for all you do.
Hi Connie!
Thanks again for all your email! I have even made a folder that has your name on it because I love your quilting ideas! Rusty is a cutie pie! Glad you rescued him! I will always rescue a animal.
Diana
Love hearing about your dogs!
