I thought I would share my Summer Picnic quilt that was made as part of the Summer Memories Quilt Along that the Fat Quarter Shop did.

I picked batik fabrics for my quilt. The Tranquil Gardens Artisan Batiks had teals and purples that I thought would make a beautiful quilt.

Batiks used for the Summer Picnic quilt

I made 16 basket blocks that had 1 1/2-inch half-square triangles in them.

For the Summer Memories Quilt Along, I used the Summer Memories Quilt & Cross Stitch Book by Susan Ache which has the full quilt pattern in it.

I made my borders a little bigger than the pattern called for, the size of my quilt is 72″ x 72″. I have it on a full-size bed.

I used a neutral batik for the background in the blocks but many times I use premium muslin with batiks and it works great.

I did a rather large meandering stitching on the quilt. I haven’t washed it yet, but when I do it will get a nice crinkly look.

Save this for later!

I'll email you this post so you can come back to it later.

Don't worry, I promise not to spam you.

It is so nice to have a backyard that looks nice in my photos.

Would you believe that my first post about the Summer Picnic quilt was May 1st? Where does the time go?

I think Rusty likes this quilt! He should because he spent a lot of time sitting on the blocks whenever they were on the floor when I was doing my piecing.

Rusty approves of the quilt!

I also did a post when I finished piecing the quilt top and started quilting it.

Greetings from Australia. I have made your 4th July table runner in Christmas fabrics and it looks stunning. Looking forward to the larger edition.

  3. Love your fabric choices!

    Dear Connie,
The Batik Basket Quilt is stunning! I love it! I have double beds too so the added border is perfect. I have the book, but am so busy doing other projects there’s not time right now. Rust is so proud and looks so happy too! I’m so glad things are shaping up nicely at the new house!
The siding job is still not up to code, or fixed yet. I’ll be so glad when they get done so we can move on with our lives.
I’m working on the Bountiful Quilt and just finished putting the top and bottom borders on. Another challenge will be the backing because there’s 4 butterfly blocks and 3 posy blocks to make on the pieced backing from the kit for the month of August. Right now I’m working on the Fat Quarter Shop’s Evergreen Mystery QAL on week 3. Keeping busy. Glad things are going so well for you.

  6. A very pretty quilt! I like the colors and the simple quilting. That is the kind of quilting I like best. So good to hear you are making progress on your new house. It is a chore to move and then make the new place your own. Enjoy the rest of your summer. Rusty is such a pretty dog.

  7. Linda Schmidt says:

Love the quilt. Rusty looks so content and looks like he loves the new home. I can understand that you will be glad when your home is complete. Enjoy your summer.

  8. Beautiful quilt! And Rusty is adorable! Thank you for your emails. Hoping the construction is soon done- it is fun to see those things come together as well, but even better to see them done!

    Have a great day,
    Linda

  11. Love the quilt. Beautiful job piecing and quilting. 1.5″ small squares….bless you!
Rusty looks as if he is getting used to being photographed and see he is “smiling” in the “approval” photo. I’m sure you will be happy when all the construction is done and you have your house to yourself. Best wishes. I really enjoy your e-mails.

  12. All kinds of wonderful there! Rusty looks happy and healthy and so adorable. The quilt is wonderful – purple and teal and oh my! Such a nice pattern of open spaces! Thanks!

  13. Anna Jessie Branch says:

I must admit, that I often look for Rusty before I check out the quilts. Glad he is still doing well. I smiled to myself when you mentioned liking the ‘crinkly’ look that you get after washing. I think washing results in an authentic, old time look. I have a friend on the other hand that prefers the non crinkly. She irons her quilts after washing. Another case of different folks and different preferences.

  14. Beautiful quilt, Connie
I love batiks and have been wanting to make a basket quilt.hmmm..this may be the answer!
Your house is shaping up and Rusty looks happy.
Take care and have a great day.
    Blessings,
    Janice
