Getting the perfect Four Patch Star quilt block

After I made the 4th of July table runner, I started experimenting with other sizes. Can you see all the samples? Most of them didn’t turn out right.

I finally got the quilt block the way I wanted! Of course, I was working with fabrics in my stash which is the best way to try something new. You don’t want to waste your new fabrics.

Fabrics

  • Navy – 1/4 yard
  • Floral print – 1/4 yard
  • Cream background – 1/2 yard
  • Floral Binding – 4-2½-inch strips width of the fabric
  • Backing
  • Batting

Make the Four Patch Star quilt blocks

I always recommend cutting and making ONE quilt block before cutting all the pieces. This is a good time to use up some scraps.

Cutting your blocks

  • Navy fabric – cut (4) 8-inch squares
  • Floral print fabric – cut (4) 8-inch squares
  • Cream background fabric – cut (8) 8-inch squares

Half Square Triangle quilt blocks

Each quilt block is made using four half square triangle quilt blocks.

Mark a line diagonally down the center of the cream square, this will be your cutting line, and then mark lines 1/4-inch away on both sides. I like to use my Frixon pens. Some people don’t like them but I have never had any trouble with them.

Sew on the 1/4-inch lines and then cut.

I like to use a Creative Grids ruler to square up my blocks. The size of your quilt blocks will be 7 1/2 inches.

Layout the half square triangles as shown below.

Sew the half square triangle blocks together using a 1/4-inch seam allowance.

Carefully make your first cut

  • Carefully line up your ruler on the center of the block
  • Cut 2 ¼-inch from the middle on each side

  • Carefully turn the quilt block 90 degrees
  • Cut 2 ¼-inch from the middle on each side
  • You will have nine sections cut

  • There are only four sections that you will turn
  • Flip the center section in the top row
  • Flip both side sections in the middle row
  • Flip the center section in the bottom row

Sew the sections together

  • Sew the sections together with a 1/4-inch seam allowance
  • Then sew the rows together

13 1/2-inch quilt block

I thought you might like to see the original quilt block and then see the difference in size after making the Four Patch Star qult block. The original quilt block size is 14-1/2 inches and now the quilt block is 13 1/2-inches.

Make a table topper

At first I thought about making a table topper, but I thought a table runner would work better on our table.

After I sewed the Four Patch Star quilt blocks together, I tried it out on our patio table. If I was going to use it here, I would only sew 3 blocks together.

I did a simple free-motion meandering with cream thread, I had enough of the navy floral print to use for the backing and binding.

Yesterday the installation of our new flooring was finished and we love it! There is a little sitting room off of the kitchen/dining room and the rugs from our last house worked perfectly here. Most of our new floor is covered up, LOL. Rusty is able to eat in his favorite spot again, he likes to be close to us.

New kitchen flooring

I know many of you have been waiting to see what our new flooring looks like, here is a better view of it. It is in the kitchen, dining area, sitting area, and laundry room.

Don’t forget to check out the 4th of July table runner which is made with smaller quilt blocks.

Even larger size coming soon!

I have made a larger size Four Patch Star quilt block that will be perfect for a quilt that can go together fast! I have the background fabrics cuts, now to decide what color I want to make it. I’m sure it will be made from batiks as they are my favorite.

  2. Thanks for the awesome tute for this lovely block.
The kitchen flooring looks good. I’m a fan of LVP bc it feels softer under foot and cleans easily. But the kitchen seems to be missing something… Oh yes, quilted tea towels! 😀

  3. Brenda @ Songbird Designs says:

I love your new flooring, Connie! I love the table runner too.

  4. I really like this table runner. Easy and cute. Thanks. R

  5. Judy Walker says:

I like that it can be added to or shortened without changing the look of the design. Thanks.
Btw, the floor looks great! Rusty too!

Estou pensando em fazer um caminho de mesa para o dia a dia e outro com motivos natalinos.
    Obrigada por compartilhar!

  8. This block is gorgeous! Imagine the different colors for the different colors for the different seasons!

  9. Connie,
Your floors look amazing! And I really love this new block you’ve made. I’m going to make a quilt with your pattern and probably a dresser scarf and 12 inch blocks to put on the night stands so everything matches up. It’s truly an amazing block.
Thank you so much for sharing! Hug Rusty for me😀

  10. Please talk about backing. What backing do you use for table runners? Do you a center layer in addition? It looks like you quilted and then bound this piece, but could a person sew the face and backing right sides together, turn inside out a do light quilting on a small piece like this? Thanks.

    1. Hi Wendy, I usually use a matching quilt fabric or premium muslin for the back of my table runners. I also add a layer of batting between the top and backing. You could sew the face and backing rights sides together as you have mentioned and quilt afterward. If doing that, I would also add a layer of batting before stitching it together.

  11. Hi Connie,
Great looking table runner. I really like that block. I’m “finally” beginning to get back into sewing a little bit – but only a little. Still a lot of work to do before I get the ergonomics straightened out. Your new flooring looks really good. When I moved, my entire place was done with LVP. I love it!! I love the look and, most importantly, Ziva doesn’t seem to mind walking on it as much as she did the laminate in my old place.

  12. Christina says:

Hey Conni, I also tried my hand at this quilt block and got a 12 inch square out of it. Looks so pretty. I used red, green ,and cream colors with snowflakes. I looks so christmasy. Thanks for the idea!!

  13. Josephine says:

    Great post; fun and inspirational!

  14. Fran Connelly says:

I love the flooring. It is beautiful. Love the color. I also love Rusty. What a sweet baby. It is great that he is your model for showing off all your great quilts. They are beautiful.

  15. Love the table runner and how the blocks are made. Will be interesting to see your other sizes.
Your new flooring is beautiful and am sure you are glad all is finally finished.
Rusty reminds me so much of our Hershey, who passed several years ago.
Glad you’re back to quilting and designing.

  16. Another beautiful table runner! The flooring looks great and what a lovely kitchen you have. I am sure glad you and Rusty found each other – he is a beautiful dog!

  17. The flooring looks great!! In the end it is worth it but the doing of it is not so great. We have been thru many remodels, updating, etc. for whatever reason I always manage to find a place that looks good on the surface but maintenance of it was horrible so now we do it right. Rusty looks so happy. We are waiting for two senior rescues from Marleys Mutts here locally. They will both be toothless but my last rescue was and she did fine. The runner is lovely but all your quilting always is. Take care🤗

  18. Glenda Hyde says:
