One of my favorite patterns for table runners is the Piano Keys pattern. Here is the Piano Keys Table Runner in 2 different colors. Both of these table runners are made with one 2½-inch strip set of batiks. I just picked strips that were mostly pink/mauve colors for one runner and then picked the brown/rust colors for the other.

I have made this table runner several times and you can find links to all of them at the end of the post. Some have applique on them.

Great way to use up your scraps

This makes a great scrap table runner also. You could cut all of the pieces from your assorted leftovers while using a plain fabric for the background.

Applique added

I was also able to make another table runner with some applique flowers added to it. Did you notice that I changed the way the rows were laid out?

I added some raw-edge applique to this table runner. You could do any type of applique you like, I just did some free-motion wiggles around each petal and the center.

This is a fast and easy quilt pattern and there isn’t a wrong way to put the rows together. Here are a few ways you could do it.

I used a batik jelly roll for the colors and a cream print for the background.

There are so many ways you can make this table runner, this would be a neat way to make it and add some large applique. I might have to make this table runner again!

I like to use binding clips to hold my binding in place while I sew it on by machine.

I used 2 different colors of thread for my free-motion quilting. I used a wine color thread on the batiks and cream on the background fabric.

For this table runner, I used brown thread for the batiks and the same cream for the background fabric.

  1. Hi Connie,

I was very sorry to learn that Mr. Mickey has passed away. I hope that having Rusty will help to ease the pain of your loss.
I love your piano key runners. Keep up the good work.

Hi Connie! I just love the different ways that you put together this table runner! I especially liked the one where the white was down the middle and the batiks were along the edges. That way, when you put a centerpiece or candles in the middle of the table runner, you can still see most of the pretty batiks! I bet Mr. Mickey and Miss Sadie are glad to see each other again, but I know that you miss him. Do you think that maybe Rusty would like a new brother or sister? You said he perked up when you babysat your daughter’s dog. Just something to think about!

Oh, Connie – these piano keys table runners are so creative. The qppliques add a nice touch too. I bought this pattern from your wonderful array some time ago. Now I need to get working to make one – or more. What a wonderful gift for any season.

  4. I really, really like these runners and must make one (or more)! They seem like something that one can sew up quickly. Every now and then that is what I need, although I certainly don’t need any runners, but I like making them.

These are super pretty! I used this piano key pattern above and below a fabric panel on a quilt top and really like it! When I finish with the quilting, I will send you a photo. Glad you took a little time off after the passing of Mr. Mickey. Luckily, you still have Rusty to love!! I think he came into your life just when you both needed each other!

  6. I love the colors of these runners. Beautiful!!!

  7. Your work is beautiful Connie! I appreciate that you share it with us.

  8. I am so sorry for your loss having been down that road with my cats over the years. Mr. Mickey will always be with you in your heart and memories. You gave him a wonderful life and filled it with love.
