Farewell Sweet Mr. Mickey

Yesterday was a sad day for us as we said goodbye to our sweet Mr. Mickey.

His heart condition finally proved too much for him and we had to take him to our vet for a final visit. He was just 12 years old.

Mr. Mickey on rug

He was a dog that loved everyone, I have never had a dog with such a sweet temperament.

Mr. Mickey came into our lives on March 17th, 2019, he was our second senior adoption. We had almost 4 years with this precious dog.

Mr. Mickey when we first got him.

He was diagnosed with congestive heart failure almost 2 years ago and I am thankful for all of the time we had with him.

All weekend long he was coughing and having trouble breathing, we probably should have taken him to an emergency clinic but I kept hoping he would get better. We took these final photos of him before taking him to our vet yesterday afternoon.

Last day with Mickey

Mr. Mickey looks a little scruffy, I couldn’t get him into a groomer for the last couple of months and was trying to do it myself. Obviously, I’m not good at it.

Bob with Mickey

Mr. Mickey and Rusty hit it off right from the beginning and I am so glad they had a little over 2 months together. Rusty followed him everywhere.

Dogs in the sun

We had so much fun spoiling Mr. Mickey, he had his own quilt and pillows.

In September we bought a stroller for him so we could go for longer walks. He really enjoyed it.

Senior Dogs

Little Rusty is our third senior rescue dog and even though the amount of time you have with a senior dog is limited, the love they give is so heartwarming. There are so many of them that need homes. I’m not sure how soon but I know we will adopt another senior dog as I think Rusty enjoyed being part of a pack.

Goodbye Mr. Mickey

Goodbye my sweet Mickey, you are so missed.

Connie, I am sorry to hear of your loss. I do not know how long ago this happened, but I feel for you. I have adopted many dogs and have found homes for others. Just this past weekend a call came out from a shelter here in ANchorage that a complete litter of pups needed fosters for the weekend before they could go out for adoption. Of course, we brought one home and within those few days, we fell in love with her. After having hunting “GUN DOGs” for the past 50 years, this was a real change. TUrned out she is a Great Dane. This will be an interesting journey as she grows and we learn more about her calm and loving nature. Thanks for including dog pix in your posts.

  2. It’s so hard when we have to give up one of our fur babies. I’m so sorry for you but happy for Mickey. You gave him love and cared for him when he was ill. His life was good and that is because of you and your husband.

  3. I am so sorry for your loss. He was an adorable dog. I will be going through that in a few months. My Sadie has heart problems, kidney problems, sore joints. But what can you expect, she’s 16.
I went to a yard sale 8 1/2 years ago; heard the lady say several times “If I knew I could find a good home, I would get rid of her.” Long story short, Sadie went home from that yard sale with me. She has been a treasure.

    1. What a blessing you both are to these senior fur babies. There is something about poodles. I have had 2. My girl Ruby is 13 years old, slowing down, and completely blind. We make all the adjustments she needs. We love her so much. We also have a Corgi, who is a sweetheart. Sending prayers for comfort………..

  4. Connie I am so sorry you lost your beloved Mickey. We lost our wonderful AireGirl, Treacle, last year and she was fourteen. It is the worst bit of having are wonderful fur babies. At least you have Rusty to help heal. Hugs & much Love Susie xxxx

  5. Pauline Robinson says:

Good-bye Mr. Mickey. You’ve been our friend, too.

  6. Karen M. Roth says:

Oh, Hun!! I am so sorry to hear this. My Princess Pepper Pud Paws may join him in Heaven sooner than we think. She just had to have 32 teeth removed, and she has Renal Insufficiency. This is a horrid few months for me, and it is not over yet. However, the fun is still happening with my Easter Choir and my crafts. I am also trying to get back into college again. Pray for my biological family, please. Long tragic story to be told.
Roses for Sweet Mickey. (I tried to leave roses and leaves for Mickey in Character format, but your Spam Protection forbade me to.)

  7. So sorry for your loss. They are our most lovable trusting friend. I too lost my furry friend last Sunday. It has been a long hard time without my Darby. I adopted her from UPAWS 8 years ago, she had been taken out and returned 3 times. I took her and as long as she liked to ride in the car was a good thing. She did not like men and it took awhile for us to work that out,but she was great. I had enough brother-in-laws and nephews who treated her like the queen she was. Eventually she loved them all and really the little ones, the best babysitter ever, and great protector. Darby will be forever loved.

  8. I’m so sorry to just be learning of your loss. As your news letter just came through. There are no words that can convey my heart felt sentiments. We can never replace the sweetness that these beautiful babies bring into our lives. You we’re all Blessed to have each other in these final days. I surely will miss Mr. Mickeys beautiful carefree “smile” as he graces your quilt projects. God be with you, Poor little Rusty – it was his friend too. Hugs

  9. Dear Connie , thank you so much for your post about Mr. Mickey. It was heart warming. He had a special home with you and your husband.
Rusty will also do well with you. Dotty

  10. My sympathies to you all. I know you guys are real dog people and the loss hurts. Give Rusty a pat for me…I’m sure he’s missing his buddy too!!

  11. I can early see thru my tears to write this…
Connie I’m so sorry for your loss. But I can tell you you were Mr Mickey’s gain! God bless you and your family for taking in the seniors. I feel the same way. They need us so. In the past 2 years I have lost 4 seniors at the ages 14-15 years old. One was deaf another was blind. Who will love them if we don’t?
Make sure Rusty isn’t alone for long. They love us, but they need company when we go to the store or doctor. Know that Mickey is running in heaven, and his heart is soaring! Hugs

  12. Patricia Hardy says:

Our 4 legged babies are so precious. My heart goes out to you for your loss.

  13. I am so sorry for your loss. I understand how hard it is to say goodbye to a beloved pet.

We are going through the same thing with our dog having congestive heart failure. She was diagnosed almost a year ago and so far is hanging on, but her coughing is getting worse. I am dreading the day we have to say our goodbyes.

I always enjoyed reading about Mickey’s exploits and seeing his cute little face in your blog posts.

  14. I am so sorry to hear of Mickey’s passing. He was a true companion to you, your husband, and then Rusty. It is truly hard to lose a pet. We lost our Sadie a couple of years ago and I still feel a lump in my throat when I look at her picture. May they both run and play together in heaven while they wait for us to join them.

  15. So sorry. Remember the good times….. It will take time to heal and I wish you both the best.

  16. I am so sorry to hear of your loss. And you are so brave, kind hearted and loving to take in senior dogs in their last few years when they think nobody loves them anymore. I
hope Rusty gets along without him and I know eventually you will get another senior dog.
    Cindy

Connie my heart hurts for your loss. Mr. Mickey was a wonderful dog and brightened up my day whenever I read your post or was shopping your site. I looked forward to seeing your newsletter to see how the dogs were doing, oh, and the patterns also, but do love seeing the dogs. Mr. Mickey was very special. Hope he is able to see my little poodle, I am sure they would run and play together.

  25. Mary Howland says:

I am so sorry for you loss. Mr. Mickey gave you so much during these four years and vice versa. I don’t have a pet but became very attached to my good friend’s Irish Springer Spaniel when she had a severe stroke. Her daughter came to live with her and she allowed Paddy to roam throughout the house which enabled him to see and be near all visitors. He was such a lovable dog. He flew 3,000 miles to his new home and is now having fun in the snow rather then sand. I miss both my friend and her dog. May you remember all the cuddles and licks Mr. Mickey gave you.

  26. Kathryn Hanton says:

The commentary about Mr Mickey alongside the quilting was heart warming. It’s so sad to hear he is no longer able to model for you & show that special kind of love only fur babies know how to give. It’s nice to know that in the future Rusty may have a new friend and another rescue dog will find a good home.

  27. Ruth Darcangelo says:

My heart breaks for you because I know how we felt toward the end of last year when we lost both our girls within a week of each other. Ginger Rhodesia was 19.5 and we’d had her 17.5 years and Sadie Louise was 11.5 and we’d had most of her life. Prayers for your peace.

  36. Fran Rowe says:

I am so sorry for your loss. An animal is part of the family and I know what a wonderful life you gave him these last few years. It was always refreshing to open up your messages and get updates on what the critters do. My daughter seems to get a lot of those old senior dogs. Right now she has a 17 year old boxer who belonged to a neighbor that died. A couple of years ago when he got bit by the rattle snake I thought it was the end for him, but he keeps pulling through. This poor dog has been thru so much the last few years, he can’t hear, he can hardly walk, now he has a tumor. But he’s big and lovable and what do you do….. you just try to give him the best life you can cause that’s what they deserve. Bless you for being such a good dog mom.

  37. My heart is so heavy! Always know that you were a blessing to Mr. Mickey to give him so much love and such a great life. His last months serving as a role model for Rusty will always live on, as Rusty gets stronger and more confident with his new life in Ankeny. Bless you and your hubby for your furry, unconditional love!

We sure do get attached to our little creatures. My dog, Chloe who will be 15 this come May is slowing down and I fear the end is getting near. She’s a Blue Healer/Border Collie, that I didn’t think I wanted or needed after my husband passed away, but my neighbor insisted and brought that little puppy to my house when she was only about 4 weeks old….just HOLD Her they said. I said NO, then they just put her in my lap and that was it. They brought her back to me when she was weaned at 6 weeks. For the past 15 years, they have also been my “baby sitter” whenever I travel. When it’s her time to go over the Rainbow Bridge, I to will be looking for an older rescue dog.

  96. My heart goes out to you and your family as you deal with the loss of a beloved member of your household. Whether we get them as puppies and kittens or as adult adoptions, animals very quickly take over our hearts and our homes, and as hard as it is to let them go, we are enriched by having had them in our lives. We especially miss those that have had chronic health conditions as they have often needed extra attention, care and love. My prayers are with you as you, Builder Bob and Rusty mourn. 101. I can’t stop crying, I’m so sad for you. I know how sad it is to let our fur babies go. I had to do it 5 year ago and I’m stall missing my boy so very much. Mr. Mickey is now running around with all the other fur babies over the Rainbow Bridge. Hold on to your other boy, time goes so fast.

  102. Rosalie Knoll says:

Thank you for sharing the wonderful journey of Mr. Mickey. I pray your heartache eases and you will be able to open your hearts and lives to another rescue dog. We lost our Lady girl a couple of years ago to significant diabetes (we did not know dogs could suffer diabetes even though we fed her all the right foods in the correct proportions) and later found our Buddy, male dog, at a rescue and he is a joy in our lives. I hope Mr. Mickey will find our Lady in heaven and enjoy running and playing in the grass.

If I could talk to him, I know he would tell me how very much he loves you and how grateful he is for the wonderful retirement life you gave him. It’s a painful job we are called to, when we take in senior dogs, for our time with them is much shorter than it is with puppies. But, for that same reason, we love them 10 times more because of the love and gratitude they show us. Thank you for your selflessness in giving old dogs a place of love, warmth and comfort. 229. So sorry for your loss of Mr. Mickey. Animals truly are a part of the family and when we lose them we grieve like losing a member of the family. HUGS!!!

  230. I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Mr. Mickey can now run free with all the other dogs who have passed over the Rainbow Bridge. I sent three along their way and it never gets easier.
    Sending you a huge hug.

  231. I am so, so sorry you have lost Mr. Mickey! I’m crying like he was my own, but I am happy he is no longer in distress. God rest his soul.

  232. So sorry for your loss. I’ve been there many times. Our furry friends fill our lives with love.
