Monarch Batik Pillows for Rusty

The Monarch batik pillows for Rusty were made with the Monarch collection from Island Batik. The pillows are finished and he is very happy with them. This is my 5th quilt project using this collection.

Here he is getting a little shut eye, doesn’t he look comfortable!

Leftover Fabric From Circular Illusion

I had just enough leftover strips from my Circular Illusion wall-hanging to cut out a 8-inch square of both strip set colors. I then cut out a 8 inch square of one of the other Monarch collection fabrics, laid the strip square on top and cut down the middle of both pieces.

I then sewed 1/4 inch from the cut line to make 2 quilt blocks similar to how my Red Batik Table Topper blocks were made (see the tutorial).

Quilt Blocks

These were the quilt blocks that I made. I decided I didn’t like too much yellow so I got out my handy seam ripper and removed both yellow half square triangles and replaced them with one of the red batik prints.

This Works Better

Using one of the batiks that are the reds works better.

Adding coordinating fabric blocks

Add Sashing

I didn’t realize the pillows were rectangle until I finished piecing the blocks. I just added a 2-inch sashing to the sides to get the size I needed. I used another coordinating batik from the collection.

Finished Pillow Covers

I did a envelope style backing for the pillows.

The First Pillow

Here is the first pillow, it looks pretty good on the Sofa quilt doesn’t it?

It looks good having matching pillows on the couch.

So lovely! Rusty is King of the house now: rescues so very much deserve that title! I’m sure he feels like one special member of the family.

  5. Those look great on the sofa. I really like that Monarch line. Rusty matches it perfectly too.

  6. Another great project and using up scraps also. I know we all enjoy Rusty’s inclusion too. I see a nice Table runner. Have you posted this before or have a pattern, or are you teasing us for something upcoming?
Glad your weather is getting better. Spring is close by!

Rusty looks so comfortable in his luxurious sofa bedding!!! I like the idea of putting the smaller strips next to a corner fabric…I think I will try it!!!
    Thanks for all your ideas!

  8. Beautiful work and Rusty is adorable.

  9. Rsty really got the hang of being the Pet! Indie doesn’t get on the furniture any more but that’s because she can’t jump up anymore – so she has a double dog bed with several quilts for “fluffing”. This fabric you choose is beautiful!!!!!!! Thanks
