Yesterday I showed you the baby quilt I was working on and today I have the Ellie Favorites baby quilt tutorial for you.

I took my finished quilt outside and took some photos around my flowers. My zinnias are beautiful and we’ve had all kinds of bees on them.

9 Inch Unfinished Quilt Block

The quilt block will be 9 inches square unfinished. When sewn into a quilt the finished size will be 8½ inches square.

The Ellie Favorites collection from Missouri Star Quilt Company has 5 fat quarters in it. It is a great deal at only $5! You will need to add 2 more fat quarters. I used the white paisley that was in the Altiora 10 piece fat quarter bundle and a pink fabric from my stash.

37″ x 45″ Quilt – Yardage Needed

Each block will use one center block and six rectangles in colors of your choice.

  • 1 fat quarter for the center squares – cut (20) 5″ x 5″ squares*
  • 6 fat quarters – cut (20) 2-3/4″ x 5″ rectangles from each
  • Binding – cut (3) 2½” strips the width of fabric
  • Backing – 1¼ yard

*I used yardage for the pink center square, binding and backing. 1½ yards is more than enough.

  • Use a 1/4″ seam allowance
  • Add a rectangle to 2 sides of the square
  • Sew 2 rectangles together
  • Sew the sections together
  • Randomize how you add the rectangles to the center
  • Make 20 quilt blocks
  • Sew 4 blocks in each row
  • Make 5 rows

I first made this quilt in 2012 in bright colorful fabrics from Connecting Threads. For more detailed directions, read my Midnight Glow tutorial.

Quilting and Binding

I used my vintage 1591 Singer sewing machine to free-motion quilt and add the binding. I really like using Wonder Clips to hold my binding in place. I also used Missouri Star’s 100% cotton thread for my piecing and quilting.

Two Sizes of Quilts

My original Midnight Glow quilt was 26″ x 34″. Ellie Favorites uses the same size blocks but there are 20 blocks instead of 12 for a larger quilt of 37″ x 45″.

Soft Pastel or Bold

Do you prefer baby quilts in soft pastel colors or bold colors? I normally go for bold mostly using batiks but I have to admit that this quilt really looks kind of elegant.

Quilt Before Washing

Here is the finished quilt. I always like to wash a baby quilt before gifting.

Washed Quilt

I washed the quilt in my washing machine using cold water and a casual cycle and then dried it on a casual cycle also. Surprisingly, the quilt didn’t shrink that much, it is 34″ x 42″.

Crinkle Look

I personally like a crinkled look for a quilt. Now wall hangings I prefer to keep as flat as possible. How do you like your quilts to look?

Rusty Approves

It is so much fun to take photos of my quilts with Rusty now! It has been almost 2 years since we adopted him and in the beginning each time I pointed a camera at him, he cringed and tried to hide.

This morning I removed “his” quilt from the couch and placed this quilt on it and immediately he jumped up and posed! He is the sweetest!
