A scrappy batik table runner can be one of the easiest quilt projects to make!

I’m unsure how long ago I pieced this brown scrappy table runner. It has been moved from one house to another and recently I put it on my design wall so something would get done with it.

I am getting ready to load a large quilt on my longarm and I still had a backing and batting on it that I was practicing with. I decided to go ahead and quilt this table runner!

Saving your scraps

Whenever I am making a new quilt project, I cut up the leftover small pieces into the sizes of squares that I like to keep on hand. Below you can see my drawer of 2-inch batik squares.

Scrappy Batik Table Runner

I recently bought a tabletop fire pit that is so neat! That is real fire!

I know someone is going to ask about the tabletop fire pit. I bought it on Amazon and it is for indoor/outdoor use. We have been using it on our deck as it is made of marble and weighs 14 pounds.

We don’t have to worry about the wind knocking it over. For fuel it uses household 70% alcohol, high Iso-Propyl alcohol and we can even toast marshmallows over it!

Rusty on the table runner

It is hard to believe but Rusty has the cutest perked-up ears. I have yet to get a photo of him that way. I just bought a new phone with a much better camera so I’m hoping to get better photos of him.

Two color brown batik table runner

This morning I went into my Electric Quilt program and made the Scrappy Brown Batik Table Runner with just two colors so I could give you an idea of how much fabric you would need to make a table runner this size.

Table Runner Rows

Make 18 rows of 9 squares for the table runner.

  • Make 9 rows starting and ending with the cream batik
  • Make 9 rows starting and ending with the brown batik

Alternate sewing them together to give the checkerboard look.

Binding the table runner

I still prefer to complete the binding on my quilt projects by machine. I have a tutorial to show you how to add binding to your quilt by machine.

  1. Rusty looks like he’s thinking “don’t you have anything better to do?”. I love the pets in the pictures.

The use of scraps shows that they can become a very attractive table runner. The brown and white look “just right”.
Thanks, Connie, for sharing this simple design.

  3. Rusty has come a long way and has nice eyes!!!!!! And the most beuatiful coat! I love your “scrap” pile – I really need to switch to batiks. This looks like a realy good project for the kids to start out with as well. Thanks!

  4. Hi Connie, I’m so impressed that you can clean out and move so soon. Our daughter is visiting from Boston and we have been cleaning out for two weeks. I am thrilled with how much we’ve gotten rid of. I am also amazed at how much we have! Still need to work on narrowing down all the fabric.
