Have you thought about making my Twilight Dragonflies quilt but don’t care to do applique? This quilt was made with a collection called Meadow Lane

I used an older jelly roll that I had in my stash and I don’t think it is available anymore. It is called Meadow Lane by Sara Davies for Riley Black Fabric.

You can always find other beautiful jelly rolls here that will work.

Using a Jelly Roll

When I updated my Twilight Dragonflies quilt pattern it was so I could include a quilt that used a jelly roll which is 2½” strips the width of the fabric.

Making the Strip Sets

Here is the strips sewn to the background fabric. I am also showing a few of the quilt block after I cut them. I added a batik fabric for the background. I mix fabrics all the time.

Larger Quilt 70″ x 70″

I used 39 of the jelly roll strips to make this larger quilt. My portable design wall could barely fit all of the blocks. There wasn’t enough fabric to make the applique dragonflies.

If you made the quilt 50″ x 70″ you would be able to as the dragonflies can be cut from the 2½” strips. There are directions for both sizes in the pattern.

Rearranging the Quilt Blocks

I didn’t sew the large blocks together until I had all of the smaller blocks made so i could move the blocks around. You can see that on my cutting table I have a strip set cut and now I’ll mix those blocks with the ones on the design wall.

On my longarm is another jelly roll quilt that I am working on. I always have several quilt projects going on at once.

Getting Ready to Longarm Quilt

Once I had the quilt top sewn together, I pulled out some 113″ fabric that I purchased from Missouri Star Quilt Company. It is a light cream with white stars on it and I thought it would be a perfect backings. I also use Hobbs Heirloom Premium Cotton Batting.

My Noltings Longarm Machine

Did I mention that this was a big quilt? I usually do the baby quilts on my vintage 15-91 Singer but I am so glad I can quilt this size of a quilt on my longarm.

I used the batik background fabric for the binding. I like the way the quilt looks but a lighter background fabric might have looked better. What do you think?

Rusty Models

I have to laugh because Rusty has decided he is a model. It doesn’t matter what quilt I put on a bed or couch, he jumps up and looks at the camera now! It is hard to believe that when we first adopted him he would get so scared when I pointed a camera at him.

Quilt on the Fence

The best time to take photos outside is right when the sun goes down at sunset. I had to ask Alexa when that would be and then have her set an alarm for me so I would be sure to get my photos.

Shadows on the Quilt

I took this photo in the morning and as you can see, the sun was already coming up.

Love how well Rusty has come along. I remember Jo Kramer posting about him and now has a loving family. He almost looks like he’s smiling for the camera.

  4. The quilt is beautiful. I like the color of the background and don’t think it needs any lighter one, but whatever your preference is. Rusty is such a beautiful dog and so glad his cherry eye hasn’t returned.

  5. Very nice! Looks so difficult until you broke it down for us. Tell Rusty Hollywood called – they need a leading man.

    Thanks

Good morning, Connie! Great quilt! I really like this quilt and the combination of fabrics; to me it has a gentle, comfortable (and comforting) look. And it is always so nice to see Rusty and how well life has turned out for him. Thank you for the good work you and your husband do in giving a loving home to dogs who need to be loved and cared for. Wishing you a good day ~
