Silly Scrap Snake Island Batik Challenge

Do you like making stuffed animals? I’m not the greatest at it so I tend to pick the easiest ones to make so here is my Silly Scrap Snake Island Batik challenge project.

Funky Friends Factory Challenge

This month, the Island Batik Ambassadors are participating in the Funky Friends Factory Challenge by creating stuffed animals. Pauline at Funky Friends Factory has all kinds of adorable animals to make and she notes which ones are easy. She also has a free teddy bear called Honey Teddy that you can get.

Rustic Riches

The Rustic Riches collection from Island Batik had lots of beautiful browns that I used to make my Silly Scrap Snake. I also used a matching brown Aurifil thread and a Schmetz needle in my vintage 15-91 Singer sewing machine. You can find the Rustic Riches batik collection here.

Snake in the garden

I am scared to death of snakes so this guy is the only kind I want to find among my tomato plants!

Silly Scrap Snake on my Quilt

I used some of my Rustic Riches batiks to make my snake. I used all of the brown colors, there were some blues in the collection but I thought the browns were fun for a nature looking snake.

Doesn’t he look good on my Irish Chain quilt? He really looks “stuffed”, I might have used too much fill.

Hiding Under the Sumac

Doesn’t he look cute hiding under the Ornamental Sumac? He is 60 inches long and very easy to make. I used a piece of red felt for his tongue along with black and white felt for his eyes. I just glued the eyes on but if I were giving this to a child I would sew them down.

Rusty

I don’t think Rusty was too impressed with the snake, he looks like he is thinking “Why do I have to pose with this?”.

Plattie Platypus

Last year I made the cute little Plattie Platypus Funky Friend and Rusty didn’t look too happy posing with it either.

Funky Friends Factory Challenge

Silly Scrap Snake was fun to make, and so cute! Thanks to Pauline at Funky Friends Factory for this cute stuffed toy pattern, Island BatikAurifil Thread, and Schmetz needles for providing the materials for the project. Make sure you check out what the other Ambassadors make for their challenge.

I used various fabrics from Island Batik @luminfabrics fabrics, @hobbsbatting Polyfil, and @aurifilthread. #funkyfriendsfactory #SCHMETZNeedles #aurifilthread #schmetzneedles #luminfabrics #iloveislandbatik #islandbatik #islandbatikambassador #hobbsbatting

Hi from Australia and so while you are lovely and warm I am sooooo cold, only made it to 10C ( not sure what that is in F ) with lots of rain and wind. I love reading all about your projects. Yours in all that is quilting. Lorraine

  2. Darlene Sewista says:

I like your snake. I suspect your fur babies just prefer to pose with one of your beautiful quilts as they know they can cuddle up with it and want to claim your quilts for their own. Not to sure how they will cuddle up with a stuffy sized for a human.

  3. Connie, Your stuffed creatures are cute, however Rusty does seem to like them. He even appears to be growling at one of them. I think he prefers comfy quilts.
Prayers for all during the current heat, especially those working outside and those without AC. Hope all stay cool and well.

  4. The snake is so cute! I really like the platypus which I don’t remember seeing last year. BTW I think you do great making these!

  5. Brenda @ Songbird Designs says:

I can’t say that I blame Rusty for not liking to pose with snakes! I don’t even like stuffed ones, but your fabric is pretty! LOL Chicken Legs ran across a real one when he went outside to his grill a couple of day ago. He had the nerve to come in and show it to me! I told him he did NOT have to do that! I quickly glanced away from his phone. And no, I’m not a fan of making stuffed toys either! I do like the fabric you chose! Have a great day, Connie, Rusty, and Builder Bob!

  6. Poor rusty looks totally disgusted have to pose with the stuffed Animals! Rather than one of your lovely quilts!

  7. Mary Howland says:

I enjoy your posts – when I saw the word “snake” I hesitated about going further but I did. Sort of cute if any snake can be called cute. Hope you’re back to making quilts today.

  8. Who knows, it might keep pests away. You could also use it as draft stopper by a door or window.

  9. Linda Jennings says:

No thank you on the snake. I’ve had 3 so far this year. One snuck into my garage & I haven’t found it. I bought some snake repellent to sprinkle around the door to keep them out. I can’t stand creepy crawling things. I just hope he doesn’t crawl up into my engine.

  10. Sheryl Harrison says:

Oh, Rusty! I agree with you! The snake is cute but not for me.

  11. It seems Rusty likes posing with your quilts more than your stuffies! I’ve not made any stuffies since my teens until recently when my daughter asked for bunnies made from her twins premie clothing !

  12. Although I am not a fan of snakes, you did a great job with it. I’m thinking I would join Rusty in my being forced to pose with it. I’ve enjoyed seeing all the critters this month.

  13. OMG…love your snake but Rusty is just priceless! I can’t stop laughing.

  14. Donna Vesper says:

Snakes keep squirrels out of the flower bed. I’m wondering if this will work.

  15. The snake is cute and he looks very much at home in the garden. I love all the stuffies you’ve been posting on Instagram. I don’t make that sort of thing as a rule because I have no place to gift them and I certainly don’t need to be keeping them! It’s horridly hot here this week, as it is in so many parts of the country. I’m grateful that I don’t have to go out in it. I’ve been walking Ziva early in the morning with a very brief outing mid-day and then a longer walk around 10PM.

  16. Love the colors of both stuffed toys! You did a great job.

  17. Rusty looks a little happier with the little platypus than with the snake. Both are cute projects though.
