Patchwork Braids 13 Quick & Easy Quilted Projects

Next week I am taking part in Kate Colleran’s blog hop using her book Patchwork Braids. This book is wonderful and her directions make it very easy to make the braids.

She also has a Mini Braid template that makes cutting your fabric simple. I would recommend getting it and I’ll be showing you how to use it next week when I make the placemats that are in her book.

New Hobby Card Making

Quilting has always been my favorite thing to do but sometimes it is fun to do other crafts. Do you do this? For me there are never enough hours in the day to do all I would love to do.

Two weeks ago my neighbor took me to Taylor Expressions which is a card making, scrapbooking store that is right here in town! Every week they have a new project that you can make at the shop. Of course you know what happens then, yep I have a card making section in my quilt studio now, LOL.

new hobby card making

After my first visit to Taylor Expressions, I went home and dug through my craft supplies that I haven’t used in a long time. It is embarrassing to realize how much I had. Actually it felt good to be getting everything out again.

Card Making Space

I put my extra 15-91 Singer sewing machine away and turned that area into my card making station. I really do everything on my cutting table as I like to stand.

A couple of weeks ago I bought two 6-tier bamboo wood bookshelves that I was planning on putting some of my fabric on. That will still happen but right now they are a mess with my card making supplies. Builder Bob put them together and they are very sturdy.

Would you believe I am using my Sizzix Big Shot that I bought about 12 years ago? I have hauled it through 5 moves and this is the first I have used it again.

Love Blooms

I finished my quilt using the Love Blooms Layer cake. It is a fast and easy block pattern and I should have had the tutorial/pattern done already. I think the card making interfered. I will work on that this week, in the meantime here is a cute photo of Rusty. I literally just took this photo.

Rusty looks so sweet and cute. Love all your patterns.

  2. Rusty looks happy! I loved scrap booking a few years ago! I don’t want to even think about what I have stashed in the back of my closet…lol

  3. Susie Leam says:

Hi Connie, just wanted you to know that I noticed Rusty’s eyes look so good now!!!! It’s easy to see that he’s happy as can be!!! Thanks for sharing him with us along with your quilting & now card making.

  4. Hi Connie! Can you please tell me where you got those clear plastic storage bins you picture standing on end on your cutting table? The containers I’m finding all have slanted sides (wider on top) and don’t stack. Rusty is so great at posing! And I love the quilt he’s resting on. Thank you for taking the time to answer my question.

      1. Wow, I’m going to have to go back and look again. The last ones I tried had much more angled sides even though they were advertised as “stacking”. I would love to find some no more than 12” deep (so they don’t hang off the shelves) with straight sides.

  5. Hi Connie, I love your shelves! Bamboo is a great wood! Love the Quilt Rusty is sitting on! Of course, I love Rusty too!
Have fun with your card making! I never got that bug! 😁
Enjoy & carry on! Terry 😊💕

  6. Connie, good luck with your new “hobby”. As one who has too many hobbies, I wish you time to do all of them. I, also, am into many different activities. I think I get bored with one and move on to another, thus lots of UFO’s!
Beautiful Love Blooms quilt. I can tell Rusty likes it- he’s smiling so big!

  7. Margaret Thacker says:

Connie on today’s post you showed your card making desk. Would you share with me where you got it and the size, please.
    Thank you
    Margaret

    1. Hi Margaret, those are actually 2 tables from Ikea. One is longer than the other and then I have plastic containers underneath. I bought the table tops and then the legs. Search at Ikea for this – lagkapten-tabletop-white

After I retired a former student introduced me to card making. I embraced it thinking I could use it in my quilts. Alas, I never got that far. After we moved I didn’t have any card making buddies so my supplies are languishing.

    1. I originally did digital scrapbooking online then I switched to quilting which I have done forever. I have lots of supplies for card making and I know having a neighbor that is interested in card making is going to keep me inspired. I love online learning but the make and take has been so much fun. I didn’t realize cardmaking and scrapbooking was still a big thing! When I did crafts shows I did stenciling on fabric and made wall hangings. Would you believe that was 27 years ago??

  9. any way you can stop the ads that pop up all over your site. I rarely look at it because it is so annoying!!!

  10. Vicki in MN says:

I am chuckling a bit Connie, card making is as addictive as quilting! I have made cards for years and then started scrap booking, tons of supplies acquired over the years. Wish for more time to do all the crafts!! Have fun!

    1. LOL, we do love our crafts Vicki! When I first started a blog I was doing digital scrapbooking and I received digital kits to share my work using their kits. It was so much fun! I don’t remember why I changed to quilting, I think it was because at that time, we had terrible internet and it took forever to download anything.

Remember Craftsy? That is where I first started selling patterns, it was free! I also bought tons of scrapbooking supplies from them every time they had a sale. I carefully stored everything and surprisingly most of the inks are still good! Now to just get more hours in the day!

  11. There are never enough hours in the day for all the crafts! Card making and scrapbooking have always intrigued meso I will enjoy seeing your pieces.

Your braids are so pretty. I can hardly wait to see what they become. I’m sure Rusty is enjoying more outdoor time. The longer daylight hours will be fun for him.

    1. Thanks Mary, the batik placemats are going to be beautiful! I have to admit that going the shop and making a sample has really made it fun to make cards. I agree, never enough hours in the day!

  12. Sheryl Harrison says:

Sweet Rusty! He is a Rock Star!

  13. Rusty is such a handsome little photo subject. Enjoy the card making – and the new fridge.

  14. Brenda @ Songbird Designs says:

I enjoy card making when I sit myself down and just do it! LOL A while back I got into embroidered cards and learned a technique to use any design and add it to a card. It was a lot of fun. I wish I had room for a card making section to keep everything together. If I kept it out I might enjoy it more! your cards are so cute! One of our church member has opened a little gift shop within a nursery not far from me and I think she is going to do card making too. I will check her out soon. Love the new pic of Rusty. He looks very happy!! Have a great week, Connie.

    1. Hi Brenda, I have so many things I love doing and there just isn’t time for all of them. I am finding this so relaxing and I didn’t touch my sewing machine for 5 days!! Now I have to do some quilting but I’ll still play with the cards. You know I really, really love organizing almost more than anything else. Years ago when I had a small bedroom for quilting, every couple of months I would tear it apart and my dad would ask what I was doing. I’d tell him I was trying to squeeze another inch out of my space. He would just shake his head and walk away. I sure miss him.

Now I have this huge studio and I still want more space! I’m visual and if I can’t see it…..I forget it. At Christmas time I ordered some card dies from Spellbinder that were for stitching. So far I made one small ornament. My neighbor and I are going to visit the local shop once a week so we can make something new. Last week we did embossing and you know I have had all the stuff but was afraid to try it. I can’t wait to see what we do this Thursday!
