It is that time again! Monday Happenings 13 in my studio. One of these days I’ll have one every week.

Cold In Iowa

It is chilly here in Iowa but luckily the big snow that we were supposed to get over the weekend missed us. I’m okay with that as we already had 6 inches. We are having to fill our bird feeders twice a day for the birds and squirrels. Luckily Menards started their 11% sale again and we bought 3 big bags of Black Oil Sunflower Seeds.

What I’m Working On

The good thing about cold weather is keep warm in my quilt studio. Rusty loves being down there with me and occasionally he goes outside and uses his nose to dig through the snow. One of these days I’ll get a photo of him doing it as he comes up and his head is snow covered.

So I have been working on two quilts.

I was looking in my “quilts to be quilted” closet and found several pieces of a quilt. I have no idea why I never finished piecing it all together unless it was because I knew it was going to be huge and a pain to quilt on my 15-91 Singer sewing machine.

I think I started this in 2017 and my daughter gave me the batiks for Christmas. Tell me I’m not the only one with unfinished quilt projects that old!

Let’s Make It Again

So I pieced all the rows together and it is a huge quilt, thank goodness I now have a Noltings longarm!

I kept looking at the blocks and decided I wanted to try making them bigger and I just happened to have a partial stack of 10 inch Poetic Bouquet leftover from my Marvelous Mini Challenge that was my Island Batik ambassador project last July. The colors in this collection are beautiful.

I had 31 of the 10 inch squares and used 30 of them for this quilt. This one was fast to make, I will be sharing more about both of these soon.

Quilt Wall No More

I used to hang my quilts on this wall for photos but that won’t happen anymore. We have been in this house for almost 2 years which is a record for us in the last 5 years. In fact we were with our accountant to do our taxes last week and the first thing she asked was “Do you have the same address?”

Anyway, I found these beautiful plants stands on Amazon and knew they would be beautiful on that wall. What do you think? Then I got Builder Bob to hang the two shelves on the wall. They have been sitting my my closet for two years!

You can find the Plant Stands here. You have to put them together, thank you Builder Bob!

Embroidery

Believe it or not, I have been doing some embroidery!

Remember when I showed the Enchanted Christmas & Ingrid’s Wildflowers Embroidery kits that I bought from Missouri Star Quilt Company? Well I have actually started doing embroidery! I’m not the greatest at it and I had to buy an embroidery hoop stand which definitely makes it easier. I pulled out my magnifying floor lamp that I had for doing counted cross-stitch. Oh to have young eyes again!

Missouri Star Sweet Meadow Peel & Stitch Design Pack

Recently (as in a week ago) Missouri Star Quilt Company sent me several of their new Peel & Stitch Design Packs and thread. After I finished the floral design I was ready to stitch this cute turtle from the Sweet Meadow Peel & Stitch Design Pack.

I finished the turtle and made it into a small wall hanging that I’ll show soon. Now I’m working on a squirrel from the Sweet Meadow Peel & Stitch Design Pack! Be sure and visit Missouri Star Quilt Co and check out their embroidery section.

I like both of the quilts. They are both very eye-catching.
The plant stands make a lovely display.

  2. Brenda @ Songbird Designs says:

Both of your quilts are beautiful, Connie, but I’m partial to those purples! LOL Your plant stands are great and the shelves go perfectly with them. Too bad you had to give up your hanging wall, though I really like the way this looks. Your embroidery looks great too. Are you still working with MSQC? Have a great week.

  3. My theme song would be Wild Thing!

  4. I have the Wildflower embroidery kit and have one more to do. I like doing them at night while watching a movie. I’ll have to figure out what to do next.
Love that plant stand. Looks so nice.
    The quilts are lovely Connie!

  5. Rita Scott says:

The son would be “LET IT BE” as nothing has to be perfect!

  6. Connie, your embroidery is beautiful. I used to do cross-stitch and would like to get back to it sometime. However am concentrating on sewing/quilting and my music. Hard to work it all in.
Your quilts are lovely, as usual. The plants stands and wall shelves are nice and add a lot to your TV area.
Hope the Polar Vortex by-passes your area. It has certainly been a cold winter, as predicted. Soon we’ll be trying to endure the hot summer! Prayers for all those affected by extreme weather conditions, especially those who have lost loved ones in floods, snow or extreme cold.

I love your 2 quilts, the purple is my favorite. I love your new plant stands. They look so good around the tv like that.
You have the same cutter that I have the go big, would you have a pattern for a cover for that to fit when it is open. I don’t close mine,it sits on a cabinet I bought from Eleanor Burns a few years ago that also holds the dies and a add on shelf to catch the die as it comes out. I’ve benn trying to figure one out, but it keeps eluding this old brain of mine. The cover that comes with it is for only when it is closed, since I don’t close it, it’s not usuable. Thank you

    1. Hi Linda, I’m sorry I don’t. I’m like you and never close my AccuQuilt cutter but I don’t cover it. I love having it handy. If you are worried maybe make something about the size of a towel or….use a towel.

  8. LOVE the plant stands! It’s cold here in NW Illinois, too.

  9. Sue MacLeod says:

Nice embroidery. I had been wondering what they look like. Not that I need any more projects.

Theme song: Who knows where the time goes, sung by Judy Collons

  10. Wow! You’ve been busy. I love the colors in the quilt. I can’t wait to see it finished. The embroidery designs are so cute, and your embroidery is beautiful. I have older eyes also and am trying to find a magnifying lamp to continue cross stitch and embroidery. Do you like the one you have? Any suggestions as to what to look for?

    1. Hi Mary, I am like you and really struggling with seeing. I like the magnifying lamp I bought but haven’t tried any other to compare it to. I actually sat next to our sliding glass door in the dining room when it was bright out and that worked the best.

  11. Doreen Sherk says:

Great embroidery and I like your batik quilt.
Thank you for sharing with us.
