The Fall/Winter collections from Island Batik are shipping to stores now. I am using the beautiful Forest Floral collection by Deb Tucker’s studio 180 Design.

Forest Flora Table Runner 16 x 45

Table runners can be made in many sizes. I usually have a certain table that I want to put one on and that is how I decide how big to make it.

I’ll have a tutorial coming soon!

Tucker Trimmer I

Last year when I made my Four Square Flight quilt I used Deb Tucker’s Wing Clipper ruler, this year I am using the Tucker Trimmer I and it is amazing!

See the black whole circle on one end and then the black half circle on the other side? This tells you which part of the ruler to use to trim blocks that are a whole number (the whole circle) or half numbers (the half circle). The blocks I made are 3″ so I used the whole circle part of the ruler.

Tucker Trimmer I

Half Square Triangles

With the Tucker Trimmer I your half square triangles (HST) will be perfect every time.

Quilter’s Magic Wand

The Quilter’s Magic Wand also by Deb Tucker is a great ruler to have in your stash! I used it to mark my diagonal stitching lines on my half square triangles.

Using the Tucker Trimmer Tool

Deb Tucker has free downloads on her website to teach you how to use her rulers. My blocks are 3 inches and by looking at her directions I cut my half square triangle pieces 4 inches and for the combination quarter squares I cut the pieces 4½ inches.

Here are the steps to make the quarter square blocks. One thing to remember is that when you make the half square triangles that will be used for the quarter square blocks – don’t trim them. You’ll end up with perfect blocks!

Quarter Square Triangles

I believe this will be my favorite way to make quarter square triangle blocks. The ruler trims 11 different sized units from 1″ to 6″.

The Best Part!

The ruler is designed for left handed and right handed quilters! I am a left handed quilter.

Forest Flora Batiks

I received a half yard bundle of Forest Flora from Island Batik and used the light neutral Sprinkles for my background and the Rebirth Green Grass for my binding and backing. I have plenty of fabric leftover and will be making another table runner which will use strips in a couple of days.

Forest Flora

Binding

I sewed the binding on to the front of the table runner and then folded it to the back. I used my new Oliso M3Pro Project Iron, I really like the size of this little iron. I also like using wood clappers and Clover Wonder Clips.

Adding binding and ironing with my Oliso iron

Quilted on my Vintage Singer

I used my vintage 15-91 Singer sewing machine to piece and quilt my table runner using a cream 50wt Aurifil thread and a Schmetz Piecing & Quilting 80/12 needle. I stitch right along the edge of the binding using a green 40wt Aurifil thread I had in my stash and the batting was Hobbs Batting Heirloom 80/20 Cotton/Poly.

Table Runner 16 x 45

The table runner was just a little bit bigger than the width of my fabrics so I added a different piece to the center of the back, now it looks like I planned it!

Here is a closer look at the fabrics used in the quilt blocks.
