Just Another HST Quilt Tutorial

When I was trying to decide which unfinished quilt projects I was going to work on in 2026, I pulled out several more that I just figured I would work on whenever I had some free time. This is just another HST quilt tutorial, I keep finding them! I know I have at least one more that is ready to be quilted.

Batik Half Square Triangle Quilt

This is another old collection of Connecting Threads batiks. I have no idea why I made the quilt blocks the size they are. I’m sure I had a plan or maybe just wanted to use up some of the fabrics.

Just Another HST Quilt made with batiks

54 x 66

The size of this quilt is only 54″ x 66″ but it would be very easy to make more blocks and then have a bigger quilt.

not a big half square triangle quilt

Yardage for 54 x 66

  • 1/4 yard or a fat quarter of (20) different fabrics
  • 2½ yards of background fabric
  • backing and batting

You could also make this quilt with 1/4 yard of (10) fabrics and have (2) alike blocks.

6½ inch Unfinished Quilt Blocks

Here are the directions to make the quilt blocks. They will be 6½” unfinished.

Sew 4 Half Square Triangles to make 1 Quilt Block

Sew with a 1/4″ seam allowance and follow the diagram below to piece 4 HSTs to make a 12½” unfinished quilt block.

A Closeup

Here is a closeup of 4 half square triangles making up one quilt block.

Pieced Backing

For this quilt I used three different batiks for the backing and luckily I had enough of the background fabric to make my binding.

When I do a large meandering quilting, it makes for a softer, puffy quilt. If I’m going to make a wall hanging or table runner, I usually do a smaller freemotion meandering.

Rusty on the quilt

It is always fun to have Rusty pose on my quilts. He is such a sweetie.

I hope you enjoyed seeing this quilt and let me know if you are interested in seeing it in larger sizes.

Beautiful quilt. Thank you for the tutorial. I’m actually using my dies to cut scraps into HST, which will be perfect for this quilt. Thank you.
And I love how Rusty is doing such a great job to pose with your quilt, including his sweet smile!

  5. Connie–
I have always sent my quilts out to longarmers, but I’d like to do this one on my own. When you do meander quilting, do you pin-baste the layers beforehand? I like this quickie quilt and want to make it, but I’m hesitant to try quilting it on my own. Do you start in the center and work out toward the edges or do you start in a corner? I am eager to piece this quilt (looks like instant gratification), but nervous about quilting it myself. Please help.

  6. That looks really nice in those colors. I remember doing the zig zag with HSTs in gray and yellows and still love the quilt. In your block construction diagram, I think that the center photo needs to have the two bottom blocks flipped??

  7. What a great scrap quilt! Love the movement of the zig-zags. I have the Accuquilt die that cuts 6 1/2″ strips, and I have quite a few leftover pieces of yardage that have a 1/4 yard or less left – they would be perfect for use with the die and this pattern. Thanks for posting it!

    1. I’m glad you like it and I bet that I cut the blocks that size because I used my AccuQuilt dies. I forgot about that.
