Island Batik Marvelous Mini Challenge

This month our challenge was easy, we were to create a mini quilt using the batiks we just received in our July ambassador box. The size requirements was a size no larger than 24 inches.

Poetic Bouquet

I used a 10 inch Stack of Poetic Bouquet for my mini quilt.

I also used the turquoise blender that came with it.

City Birds 18 x 18

18 inches is a great size for a wall hanging or a center piece on a table.

Country Birds & City Birds

One of the first quilt patterns that I made for Island Batik was my Country Birds in 2014. I am updating the pattern and will have it for sale again soon.

My mini quilt will be called City Birds and is 18″ x 18″. Both patterns will be available soon.

Electric Quilt 8

I always like to work up my designs in EQ8 and lately I have been printing the designs, making sublimation copies and putting them on fabric. This is also the program I use to make B&W coloring pages for my patterns.

Paper Pieced Pattern

Both patterns are paper pieced, I have a bundle of newsprint paper that I print the pieces on. This is much easier to tear off after you do your stitching. The blocks are small and this is the best way to get perfect quilt blocks. I used my new Blue Fabric Water Soluble Glue Pen to hold the first piece in place.

Purple Blender Batik Binding

I had enough of the purple blender batik that I had used for my Quarter Spin quilt to also be able to do the binding on my City Birds mini and a dark purple Aurifil thread.

Quilting City Birds

I used a batik backing and Hobbs 80/20 Bleached Batting. I also used a white 50wt Aurifil thread and a teal 50wt Aurifil thread for my quilting and a Schmetz 80/12 needle.

Pattern Coming Soon

I had hoped to finish the City Birds pattern by now but I’ll let you know as soon as it is done.
