The Around the World quilt is one of the easiest quilts to make.

Depending on your colors they can look so different.

This is a very old UFO…..started maybe 15 years ago. I have no idea why I never finished it…well hmm it still seems like I start more projects than I finish so I guess that is what happened.

I bet you don’t have any of these fabrics in your stash! I pulled this out after seeing Marcia’s table runner with a Lazy Daisy quilt pattern at Crafty Sewing & Quilting I just couldn’t wait to try it out. At the time she just had photos of it and I was able to figure out how she quilted it.

I was just going to fold the backing over to the front and bind it that way but I quilted too close to the edges and every time I try to trim the batting I cut a hole in the back. So I used another old fabric for the binding.

I love this pattern!

Wow that checked fabric can drive you wonky if you look at it too long! You can see a couple rows of quilting that aren’t done yet, you go in one direction and then come back and stitch the other direction.

Marcia’s quilting is much better but I think I’m getting the hang of it. I was able to turn a UFO into a small table mat and also learn a new quilting pattern….not bad!

I told you this was a fast tutorial – you can save the image below to give you all the info you need to make a small Around the World quilt.

  1. Hi Connie,
This is just another note to say thanks for all the beautiful pics of your quilts. When I see them, I want to make each one, but of course time does not allow. It is a pleasure to look at your website and see what you are making. I live in Alaska and we do not yet have any conditions that tell us that winter is over, but it makes it good for quilting indoors.
