Dollar Tree Decorations

I had stopped at Dollar Tree and picked up some napkins, paper plates and other fun patriotic items they had. That gnome is really cute.

Patriotic Placemats and Burgers

Builder Bob/Chef Bob was grilling hamburgers so I took some photos. We were going to eat out on the deck but the temperature was almost 100 degrees and even with the umbrella up it didn’t shade the whole table so we went inside to eat.

I think Rusty looks cuter with the scarf on!

Fabric

  • Blue fabric
    cut (4) 3½” squares
  • White fabric
    cut (4) 3″ squares
    cut (2) 2″ x 11″ strips
    cut (2) 2″ x 17″ strips
  • Red fabric
    cut (2) 2″ x 11″ strips
    cut (2) 2″ x 17″ strips

Making the stars

  • Take each 3″ square and fold in half diagonally
  • Next fold the bottom left corner to the right even with the bottom right
  • Place this in the bottom right of the blue 3½” square

To make it easier for me to hold on to this piece, I sewed with about 1/8″ from the edge to hold it to the blue square in both directions.

Making the stars

Piecing The Star Together

  • Place the white star in the bottom right of all of the blue squares
  • Sew the squares together with a 1/4″ seam allowance
  • Caution – sew slowly as you will have a lot of thickness to sew through

View of the back

I pressed the seams open as it was so thick. I also spritzed the seam allowance and used a tailor clapper to set the seam.

6½” Star Block

I forgot to take a photo of the star block when it was all pieced. It will be 6½” square.

Here it is all quilted, I did lift up each star piece and quilt a little underneath.

Add The Strips

  • Sew the (4) 2″ x 11″ strips together
  • Press to the red fabric
  • Add this to the right side of the blue star block
  • Sew the (4) 2″ x 17″ strips together
  • Press to the red fabric
  • Add this to the bottom of your block
Add the red and white strips

Pieced Patriotic Placemats

Here is your pieced Patriotic placemat.

Quilting

I did a simple meandering quilting on the placemats using my vintage 15-91 Singer sewing machine. I added the backing and Hobbs batting that was leftover from my last quilt.

Binding

Cut (2) 2½” width of fabric strips for your binding. It actually takes 1½ strips per placemat so if you cut (3) strips you can do two placemats. I used Wonder Clips to hold my binding in place.

Extending The Width

When I made the first placemat, I didn’t make it wide enough. The placemat on top is my first one.

To make it wider I cut 2½” x 2″ pieces of the red and white fabrics, sewed them together along the 2½” length and then added this piece to the placemat.

When you see this closeup you can see where I added the width but I don’t think anyone will even notice.

  1. I quilted my placemat using stars in the red stripes, swirls in the white stripes and Cs in the blue area. Love how it came out.

Hello Sweet Connie: These Patriotic placemats are stunning. You and Rusty look great with the scarf. Your Dollar Tree goodies are the icing on the table. Chef Bob grilled hamburgers and what a perfect July Fourth meal. Happy Summer Smiles. I pray you are not in the rain soaked floods.

  4. Love the folded star. Not sure if I understand the width issue and fix.

    1. Oh, Connie, I finally figured it out. The first one was short, and you lengthen it. Then, the second one you did correctly and made your instructions reflect the correct 17″ and 11″. So our cut on all placemats is 2 1/2″ x 17″ and 2 1/2″ x 11″ red/white strips. Yay!

  5. Lovely pictures of you two! I’m crazy about stars and this is going to be the next one up! (Just binding a small quilt for kids) Stipple quilting is my fav!
