The wind has been crazy and I wasn’t able to go outside to take a photo of my Four Square Flight quilt, I was afraid it might blow away! This is my quilt for my June quilt project as an Island Batik Ambassador.

The quilt has a combination of Flying Geese blocks and 4 Square blocks.

Sleep in Heavenly Peace

This month the Island Batik ambassadors are creating quilts that will be donated to Sleep in Heavenly Peace, as part of the Quilts Across America initiative started by Deb Tucker of Studio 180 Design in 2023. They are group of volunteers dedicated to building, assembling and delivering top-notch beds to children and families in need.

This organization makes beds for children so that no child sleeps on the floor.  Their goal is to get kids off the floor, into a bed, and under a quilt.

Guidelines for the Quilt

We had a few guidelines to follow when making our quilts:

  • Size: between 50” to 60” wide and 75” to 90” long
  • Fabric: Any, in colors that appeal to children aged 2-17
  • Work with any size unit that you want, you can also use more than one unit size in the project
  • Must use at least 30 units total, made with the Studio 180 Design tool you received
  • Simple allover quilting is recommended
  • Machine bound is preferred

Electric Quilt 8

I normally use Electric Quilt 8 to design my quilts but this one started out with me making the flying geese borders and then deciding to add some quilt blocks that also used small 4 square blocks. It was a challenge but I really like how it turned out and a pattern is coming soon.

It is times like this that I really miss my sliding design wall. I am using a portable design wall that usually works okay.

I always use Schmetz needles in my vintage 15-91 Singer sewing machine and used the Schemetz 80/12 Microtex Sharp for this quilt.

Closeup of the Quilting

I used my Noltings Longarm to quilt my flying geese quilt. I used a batik backing and Hobbs 80/20 Bleached Batting.

I did a fairly large meandering stitch, this will make the quilt soft and cuddly.

60 x 75 Quilt Size

My quilt is 60″ x 75″ and will fit a twin bed perfectly for some child.

Full Size Bed

I thought it would be fun to show the quilt on a bigger bed. This could be a quilt that a child would keep for a long time.

Better View

Here is a better view of the quilt design.

Flying Geese using the Wing Clipper Tool

Studio 180 Design provided each ambassador with a tool to use to create this month’s challenge quilt. I received the Wing Clipper tool in my January Island Batik ambassador box and also the Quilter’s Magic Wand.

Here are my Flying Geese quilt blocks made with the Wing Clipper Tool from Studio 180 Design.

Large Square is the Goose

You start out with one large square of fabric and four small squares.

The large square will become the large triangle on the flying geese quilt block and is called the goose. The four smaller squares will become the sky on either side of the goose.

Quilter’s Magic Wand

The Quilter’s Magic Wand is an accurate ½” wide ruler with an etched line running down the middle. It is useful for marking the diagonal seam lines when using the Wing Clipper tool.

Make 4 Flying Geese as a time

You will be able to make 4 flying geese blocks at a time. If you notice, I am now using the white batik for my large square. I have started using my Oliso iron all the time and I’m liking it.

You will notice that I switched my fabrics, sorry about that.

10 Different Sizes

This is when the Wing Clipper tool is really handy get your flying geese the correct size. You can make flying geese blocks in 10 different sizes!

The Wing Clipper tool come with directions showing how to use it if you are right handed or like me – left handed.

3 by 6 inch Flying Geese Blocks

These are the flying geese blocks that I used in my quilt.

I used a white batik for the background and then all kinds of beautiful fabrics that mostly came from my Stash Builder bundles and other Island Batik fabrics from past quilt projects.

Another superb example of your patchwork expertise, Connie.
I love the geese flying around the border. The squares make a stunning centerpiece for the quilt.

  8. Absolutely beautiful! Love the colors. The child that receives this quilt is so lucky as it was made with love! Thank you for taking the time to do it.

    Dear Connie,
The Four Square Flight Quilt is beautiful, Connie! So glad to see Rusty was also included in one of the photos. Life for me has slowed up and I had a flare up on the 15th with my left knee so it was hard to walk on the leg, but I keep pushing. I’ve been working on the Edelweiss quilt and I have the hard parts done. I’m way behind on Anne with Said With Love’s Quilt Along, but that’s okay because I’m moving forward at my own pace.
Also, sure glad you were all okay when the storms hit. Take care, and enjoy summer!

  10. I love the quilt and especially the black background, look forward to the pattern. Can the flying geese blocks be made without the wing clipper tool?

  11. Will there be a pattern for “Four Square Flight”. It’s an awesome quilt

  12. I really like the design of this quilt, the colors really set it off. Connie you have your squirrels and birds. We have the hummingbirds and doves. Oh yes a few quails, but then we live in the desert.

  13. Joyce Harper says:

I love this quilt, the colors are beautiful!

  14. Connie, I love your geese quilt and especially that it will go to a child for their new bed. Love how you take care of all your outdoor animals. I can only imagine how great it is to be able to watch them from your windows. I wouldn’t get any sewing done for sure. Have a great day!!

  15. I have followed you for a long time but I don’t think I’ve commented before. I love the wing clipper tool and use it all the time. I like this quilt and will wait for the pattern!

  16. I’ve begun decluttering and reorganizing my sewing room and this morning’s Four Square Flight quilt design arrived at the right time! It’s colorful and looks like something I can make without frustration. The idea to make one for a needy child makes it all the more beautiful and doable. Thank you so much for the photos of your completed quilt, Rusty, and your outdoor friends who look to you for many of their needs.

  17. Lorena Boutin says:

I love this quilt. The pattern and colors are beautiful. I can’t wait for a pattern to come 0ut. The ducks are appreciating your kindness. Give Rusty a hug for me.

  18. I love this quilt, Connie. I would imagine it’s also an easy one to size up or down as needed. Sadly, I have to report that I’ve been extremely non-productive this year. I’m hoping that the hot weather will drive me indoors and make me spend more time sewing. We’ll see.

  19. OH MY!!!!!!! What a great tool! (tools!) I have collected many triangle rulers and they WERE fine until I saw this one! HA! I do some pretty crazy things to avoid triangles! But this is amazing and I have ordered it. Looks so easy!!!!!! And I love easy!
    Thanks!

  20. Will you be adding a sliding design board to this sewing room?

  21. I’ve just purchased EQ8, but i’m having difficulty wrapping my brain around using it to dissect quilt blocks. maybe it is that i’m not setting the blocks correctly. I’d really like to get a handle on this as i’m sure it has many invaluable uses i’ve yet to discover.

  22. Judy Nichols says:

    Good Morning from west Texas!
I enjoy your emails and nature posts. The quilt is beautiful! It will be a blessing for a deserving child. You are an inspiration to the quilt world.
    Have a wonderful day.

  23. Vicki in MN says:

    It’s beautiful Connie!

  24. What a beautiful quilt. It looks very summery. I see Rusty has been very well behaved and is NOT on the quilt 🤭. I love watching the birds and squirrels in the garden. We have hedgehogs as well but usually only see them in the evening. I didn’t know ducks didn’t like squirrels, but lovely to have both to watch in the garden.
