I have several things I’ve been working on. I finished making a table runner with the red batik strings. It is similar to this red string table runner and tutorial I made over 10 years ago. This one is a little smaller and shaped a little differently. More on this soon.

Jelly Roll Rug
I started making a Jelly Roll Rug, it was a impulse thing after watching a video and realizing I had everything! I have bought several Moda Scrap Bags from Green Fairy Quilts and that is what I’m using. If you like a surprise then these are fun and 50% off. Green Fairy also has Jelly Rolls on sale.
I had 2 rolls of the Bosal Batting and also the Clover Fabric Tube Maker which I bought several years ago. I have the tubes made and it is now time to try making the rug. Wish me luck, I’ll do a post and also share links to several videos that really helped me.

January UFO
How are you doing on your January UFO? I have mine finished and will share it as soon as I make a video and get ready to pick my February UFO. Here is a sneak peek.

Medical Emergency and Getting Lost Driving
This week my quilting time was kind of sporadic as my husband had a nose bleed that just wouldn’t quit. We were at Urgent Care, then a Ears,Nose, & Throat (ENT) visit and finally the Emergency Room at the hospital. It ended up being a little scarier than just a nose bleed and he isn’t out of the woods yet. We go back to the ENT tomorrow and if there is still bleeding they will schedule surgery.
I don’t like to drive in the dark and had to do that for the early ENT visit in West Des Moines. Later that day we had to go to Des Moines to the hospital and I actually got lost driving home in the dark. GPS wasn’t working right, I was really getting stressed and feeling old! It was a relief to finally get home. His appointment tomorrow is at 9:30 am so I’ll have daylight.
January Color of the Month
You still have time to link up your Teal January quilt block project. I have a couple more blocks to show.
The next Color of the Month will be on Sunday February 1st and the color will be Red, I hope you’ll join.

Handmade With Love
On Saturday my daughter and I took a class at Taylored Expressions and made 2 Valentine projects, we also received 2 boxes of chocolates. We had a lot of fun.

Winter Chill
I hope everyone is staying safe, I know many people are without electricity, and others have lots of snow. Here in Ankeny, IA we just have very cold weather.
We have been filling our squirrel/bird feeders twice a day. There are 5 squirrels in this photo but we have had as many as 7 at a time. I’m always happy to see a squirrel or bird drink from the heated water. The plastic tote keeps all the wires dry.

So far I haven’t started on my February UFO but I did start one like your finished January UFO in batiks as well. I’ve picked all the charm squares and made about four blocks and now it’s a UFO!
So that’s where all the squirrels went! Cold and icky in Chicago as well. Love the Bosal batting – never seen it before! Doing a Jelly Roll Race – easy no brainer for this cold weather. Have “requests” from family for quilts as I promised “after the holidays.” Hope everything comes out ok – sending prayers.
Dear Connie, nose bleeds can be so scary! I am sure it caused great anxiety for you and Builder Bob. I hope surgery can be avoided but the treatment may also avoid issues in the future. Often, particularly at this time of year with our environment being so dry, nosebleeds are not uncommon. My son deals with this every year, since childhood actually. Best wishes for a successful treatment. Safe driving as well. We have 17 inches of snow since Sunday, we have been plowed by we cannot navigate our 500 foot driveway, through the woods, shielded by trees that causes ice to form in the worst areas. 7 degrees for tells days of this. Oh well, more time to sew! Take care.
Stay safe Cheryll, this is a perfect time to stay home and quilt. We used to have a driveway like that years ago. Stay warm and cozy. Bob’s nose stopped bleeding so far, we bought a humidifier to keep by him as I’m sure the house is dry. Thanks!
My doctor son-in-law says for nosebleeds by some Afrin nasal spray, squirted up your nose. It serves as a cauterizer I guess and stops the bleeding. There is also a product on the market called Nampons. It is kind of a tampon without the string. And you only leave it in for 10 minutes..
I hope Bob is doing well now. That sounds like a scary day, made worse by your drive home. I’m looking forward to seeing your rug. I have all the makings for one too, but havent done it yet. It has sounded bitterly cold there. I’m sure the critters are happy for food and accessible water.
Dear Connie,
My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your hubby for a speedy recovery from his nose bleeds. Hope Rusty is doing well too.
The January Teal Project looks lovely! So glad you and your daughter had fun at the class you took. The project is so cute!
Getting lost while driving is no fun, and I’ve been there. I still carry a paper map in my car when I go somewhere unfamiliar.
It hasn’t been this cold here since 2019! Only 53 days until spring!
Take care,
Roxy in Hudson, WI
Stay warm Roxy, the doctor removed the packing and so far no more bleeding. Thank goodness. When we went to the doctor this time it was daylight but…I wrote down the directions on a piece of paper as Google always tries to take us a different way each time. This is when I miss living in a small town.
Hi Sweet Connie. Prayers for your husband and his health. I now how scary that all can be. And scary for you to get lost driving. Stay safe ad warm. How fun to take a class with your daughter. Loving Hugs…sherry
Thanks Sherry, the doctor visit this morning went well and no more bleeding. Praying it doesn’t start again.
I hope all goes well with your husband’s ENT and follow-up nose checks, and all visits are during the day. I, too, am getting to where I don’t like to drive at night. Your red tabletopper is gorgeous. I need to pull out some reds to try to make such. I love yours.
Thanks Darlene, all went well and so far the bleeding has stopped.
Connie, I I hope everything is ok with your husband. Medical emergencies are never good. Take care. I’m enjoying finishing projects and the color challenge. Thanks.
Connie – I hope everything goes ok tomorrow. Thank goodness you will have daylight and good weather. All of your online friends will be thinking of you both.
I hope Builder Bob gets better soon, or y’all get to the bottom of the problem soon, and it is not serious. If you keep feeding those squirrels, they are going to be so fat they can’t climb that tree. 😊 Hope Rusty is fine and y’all stay warm!
Thanks Patty, and fat squirrels are really cute!
The red table topper is beautiful!
I enjoy watching my squirrels. Several chase each other around the trunk of a tree. I have an oak tree so they enjoy the acorns.
Sending thoughts and prayers for your husband’s treatment and recovery.
So sorry about your husband’s health issue, and your having to drive in the dark, getting lost and being stressed, yikes! Hoping all will be well!
Thanks Rose, he is doing ok and the drive today in daylight was perfect. Hopefully no more night driving.
I am so sorry to hear about Bob’s problems. I grew up in Iowa and before I ever had a humidifier I boiled a big pan of water on my stove all day. I am doing it now even though I have 2 humidifiers and one on my furnace. It really raises the humidity in my house and helps my husband and me to tolerate the dryness that comes with the cold and snowstorms in Ohio. If that is Bob’s problem it would probably help. Of course the doctor will help with whatever is the cause of his problem.
Hang in there. Waiting to find out is horrible. Kathy
Thanks Kathy, I just bought a humidifier for him as our house is warm and dry. They removed the packing and so far…..no bleeding. Stay warm.
Prayers sent for your hubby. I pray all will be well for both of you and only good news. Driving at night is not our favorite thing anymore.
Connie I am so sorry your hubby had to ER etc. I hope all turns out fine with no more problems and no surgery. I don’t like driving in the dark anymore either. Take care.
Thanks Vicki, they removed the packing and no bleeding so far. The drive at night was stressful because I ended up out the country in a different town, then I realized I could see the Capital building in the distance and I was heading to it so I was going in a circle. Ugh.
Connie,
God answered my prayers and the storm passed over. We got a dusting of snow and about 20 min. of sleet. Today most all is melted. I cleared the deck and steps before re-freezing happened.
Hope all is well with Builder Bob. I suppose they checked his blood pressure as that, when high, can sometimes cause a nose bleed. With the winter heat and dry air, that could be another cause that using a humidifier would help. I’m so ready for Spring! Prayers for all hit hard by the storm & that power is quickly restored to those without.
Everyone stay warm and safe.
Thanks Beverly, I’m glad the worst is over for you now. Just bought a humidifier so hopefully that will help him.
Praying for all to go well for you and your husband tomorrow
Thanks Terry, removed packing and no bleeding so far.
Sending prayers and best wishes for Builder Bob’s quick recovery, hopefully without surgery. I hope you can avoid driving at night in the future – that’s a scary thing that I don’t do anymore. Take care of yourself, too.
Thanks Pat, they removed the packing and no bleeding so far. I can’t believe how badly I got lost. Guess all the moves have caught up with me. It was easier driving in Maquoketa with 6,000 people.
Praying for both of you. I understand that stress of waiting for answers and driving too. Hopefully the bleeding stops with no need for surgery.
Thanks Sharon, no bleeding after they removed the packing and this doctor couldn’t believe we were told he might need surgery. Sigh.
I pray your husband will get better soon without surgery. Medical emergencies are stressful for everyone involved.
Sorry to hear about “Builder Bob”. Did they figure out if it was dry sinuses, or something else? I know the cold and changes in temperature going in and out can aggravate the thin skin in the nasal passages and lead to some pretty serious bleeds. The other thing would be high blood pressure, but you have never mentioned anything about that. Whatever the issue, it will be resolved.
As for a WiP, I have a quilt top I started and liked, using scraps that didn’t even put a dent in my scrap bucket! Then I decided I needed to use some other fat quarters I have to make more of the star blocks. Needless to say, the progress I’d made in putting two rows together was ripped out to accommodate the new stars when I get them done and can scatter them in the quilt. AUGH! What fun! We have 9+ inches on the ground and may be getting more. So you know where I will be the rest of this week!!!!!
Hi Fred, they still aren’t sure why he has the nose bleed, also at the hospital his heart rate was 160 which they called SVT and they did a procedure that restarts your heart. It works and now Bob needs to see a Cardiologist. We go back to the ENT this morning and will learn more.
You are keeping busy and than goodness for a seam ripper!
You and Builder Bob are in my prayers. I pray he won’t need surgery. Please take care of yourself!
Connie, best wishes for a speedy recovery for Builder Bob. Lets hope that it isn’t too serious and you have my prayers.
God love you for continuing your blog posts. I love getting your e-mails.
