Today we are heading out on a little trip to Minnesota to see Builder Bob’s mom, she will be 96 on Saturday. I hope my mind and body are in as good of shape as hers when I am that age. It is a 8-hour drive but…..we will take two days to get there. We have a favorite Meat Market called Nick’s Sausage in Hayward, MN and we will be picking up some meat to take with us.
I thought I would show you the beautiful fat quarters I got at the Calico Hutch quilt shop in Hayward, Minnesota. We happened to be there the last Friday of the month when all fat quarters are only $1.50 each. I picked up some batiks…….
a few more and then some cute packages of scraps. The staff were very nice and fun, we were at this shop 3 years ago and it is still just as neat! Lots and lots of beautiful quilts, kits, and fabrics.
How did we find this shop…….it is in the same little town as the Calico Hutch which is one of my favorite quilt shops to stop at. It is so much fun to look back at old blog posts and revisit memories! The first time we stopped at Calico Hutch was in 2010 when all of the family got together for his mom’s 90th birthday!
In September of 2013 we stopped at the Calico Hutch again and I picked up all these neat little scrap packs and had so much fun with them! I know we stopped last year but I can’t seem to find a post.
We also met a couple of women that had come for the fat quarter special……nothing like a sale to get us talking! Marj and Karen were so much fun! Karen and Bob talked about remodeling while Marj and I grabbed the goodies. Hmmm…..I wonder if there were any fat quarters left for Karen after we left.
Here they are trying to look serious……not working guys! I didn’t take any photos inside darn it. I think it was because I had too many things in my basket.
The last time we came to Hayward, Bob bought some fantastic summer sausage at Nick’s Smoked Meats and we picked up some again to take home. When I found these packages at the quilt store I just had to buy them! These are scraps of fabric that are packaged and taken to Nicks to be weighed and the label printed. I opened only one so far and I can’t wait to get home and open the rest!
We are taking little Sadie with us so we will stay in Albert Lea, MN which is about halfway. We are now looking for pet-friendly hotels……..she has changed our lives!

I have noticed how many of you have made the same runner. But that is ok, the variety of colors shows how versatile the pattern is. Your photo is lovely.
Safe travels and Happy Birthday to Builder Bob’s Mom. She certainly does sound amazing. Enjoy your trip.
The Calico Hutch is fabulous. It’s been too long since I’ve been there. Hmmm. Have you been to Grubers in Waite Park, MN near St. Cloud? It’s amazing. One of these days I’d love to meet on one of your journey’s to MN. I agree that it’s been a blast to see all the different table runners. AND congrats on making the top 100 quilt bloggers!
The Calico Hutch is definitely a fun shop. I finally got to stop there in September while coming home from a business trip to Madison WI with the hubbie. I know I’ll make a point of stopping again.
Have a safe trip! Happy birthday to your MIL.
Have a safe and fun trip. Happy birthday to her.
Have a safe trip! I remember turning off I-35 at Albert Lea going to Rochester when I took my late husband to Mayo Clinic so many times. Your little pelican is an amazing match for your runner–looks like you planned it that way???
Have a wonderful visit. I’m betting Sadie is going to be a big hit with Builder Bob’s mom!
