Whenever I have leftover scraps from a quilt project, I like to make small quilt projects like these Flowing Meadow Mug Rugs.

Flowing Meadow Mug Rugs

When I made my Flowing Meadow Dresden Plate quilt, I had small strips of each of the 20 fabrics and they were perfect to use for mug rugs.

Quilt As You Go Mug Rugs

I used a scrap piece of my Hobbs Heirloom 80/20 Bleached Cotton Batting, this is a great way to use up your leftover batting. Don’t throw the scraps away!

For this mug rug I just laid the strips out diagonally on the backing and batting. I started out with backing and batting that was about 7-inches x 10-inches. Mug rugs can be any size you like.

My favorite quilting tools

These are some of the items that I use all the time when I’m quilting.

String Piecing

I have a tutorial where I made an Easy Quilted String Mug Rug that shows how I made one by just sewing the strips together first. Both methods are fast and easy!

Adding Island Batik Labels

Do you do anything with the ribbons that come with bundles of fabric? Island Batik has 2 different sizes of ribbons. I added the small ones to this mug rug. I just top-stitched them on using a neutral color called Sand of Aurifil 50wt thread and a Schmetz 80/12 Microtex Sharp needle.

I have made a pillow using the larger ribbons. I also used scraps of neutral batiks. Be sure to look at my Island Batik Label Pillow tutorial.

Add Binding To The Mug Rug

I cut a 2½-inch strip for my binding. Sometimes I will cut 2¼-inch bindings, both work.

Wonder Clips

Do you use Wonder Clips to hold your binding in place? They are my favorite and I can’t remember the last time I used pins to hold a binding in place. I always finish my bindings by machine.

Crazy Quilt Mug Rug

I still had some leftover scraps so I decided to make a little Crazy quilt type mug rug. I have made several quilt projects over the years using this method.

In 2016 (where does the time go??) Christa Watson made a neat Improv Star quilt block with a center like this. She also shared a tutorial for her block that is still available! Read my Improv Star post.

Save this for later!

I'll email you this post so you can come back to it later.

Don't worry, I promise not to spam you.

Improv Crazy Quilt

This is very random, I just started out with a small 5 sided scrap for the center and then added to the sides.

Mug Rug with Coffee and Cookies

Small mug rugs with a coffee cup and cookies make great gifts. You can also add a packet of Swiss Miss Hot Cocoa and stick that in the cup. My grandkids love that!

Which Mug Rug?

If you were only making one mug rug, which one would you choose to make?

  1. These are both so pretty. I love the addition of the ribbon. I like how mug rugs add a pop of color to wherever they are placed.

Fond greetings from New Zealand. And to see the other ” Not in US” winner was just over the water in Australia, those of us down under are so far away from you but just in a instant can be in touch.

  3. Mug rugs are my favorite things to make when I just want to see. I like both of your designs. Thanks.

  4. Hi Connie! What beautiful, rich colors!!! I love both crazy quilts and stripes…what a difficult choice! I would probably have to have both!! They certainly are on my to-do list of fast and fun projects!

  5. You always have the best projects! We say we use “Everything but the Moo.” And I think you got it! Thanks they are lovely!

  6. These scraps make lovely mug rugs. Just shows that even little scraps can be put to good use. I like both of the designs and believe a set with each would make nice small gifts.

  7. I don’t think I can choose liking one more the other – I like them both! Asking that is like asking which of my children do I like best! lol. I want to make one of each. Your dresden plate quilt is gorgeous!

Very nice. I would make the stripe one.
I’m trying to find out how to sew a quilt with a minky panel on the front. I bought the panel from Missouri Star. It’s a flag with an eagle flying over. I bought it without reading the description because I fell in love with it. I’m trying to get it done for a veteran I know. It’s 60″ w x 36″ high. I added flag material to top and bottom to make it 60″ x 60″ finished. I’ve been looking on you tube, sent Missouri an email (no answer as yet). I will be using polyester batting. If you have any ideas or anybody out there, will you please post it. Thank you very much.

  9. Loving the mug rugs! I will take them both. Too hard to choose just one.

  10. Love the mugs rugs. I feel I can never have enough of them. Hard to choose one, both are great but I do like the wonky one a little better. Everything you make is so pretty.
