Easy Batik Baby Quilt
Baby quilts are always a good quilt project to make and have on-hand. I love fast and easy quilt projects, do you? This easy batik baby quilt is fun to make and can look completely different from the last one you made just depending on the fabrics and colors you choose.
Size is 31″ x 39″
It is very easy to make this longer or wider just by adding more borders. This also make a nice lap top quilt for someone in a wheelchair.
2016 Island Batik Fabrics
Would you believe that in 2016 I made several batik table toppers using the same teal fabrics that I had just received from Island Batik that year when I was an ambassador for them, I actually started in 2014.
Evidently I also pieced this one and between all of our moves I forgot about it. If you look at the tutorial for the table topper, you make it the same way other than adding additional borders at the top and bottom to make a rectangular quilt.

Making a Rectangle Quilt
Anytime you find a square quilt pattern that you like but don’t want it to be square – just add some borders to the top and bottom like this.
Simple Meandering
I like to make the quilting a little looser on a baby quilt, when washed this will be soft and comfy. I also always put my binding on by machine.

I will be sharing my first Signature collection with Island Batik Lumin Fabrics in August. I am so excited to finally be able to share what I have been working on!
The collection is called Feather & Flair and here is a sneak peek at this same baby quilt in some of my new fabrics. When I get this quilted I will write up a pattern for this size of quilt.
Rusty
Rusty is still my favorite model, he jumps right up now and poses but he is getting some competition.
Mr. Puff
Here is Rusty’s competition. This is Mr. Puff and he belongs to our granddaughter who is staying with us. She actually has two cats but the other one is hiding for now. I constantly call Puff a girl – it turns out when they got Puff, they thought it was girl – until “she” went in to get fixed.
He is a sweet cat but meows all the time. Rusty just found out there is one more cat, I think he is in shock. Both cats have been around my daughter’s dog so everyone pretty much ignores each other.
Don’t worry Rusty, you are still number 1!

I have been a subscriber for a long time. I have a real love for batik fabrics starting when I first started sewing. For a long time, it was the only fabrics I bought. This easy batik baby quilt looks fancy, but so easy to do. My question is, if you wanted to make this quilt a little bit larger, would you just cut the strips wider? I would like to make some for a wheelchair quilt.I was thinking of going with a 3 inch strip size. Not being good with the quilt math, I thought I would ask you

Hi Jo, if you are talking about the borders – yes you can make them as wide as you like. I think I did the first on at the top and bottom at 3″ and then the other 2 at 2.5″. Would could also add borders on the sides.
If you are talking about the strips for the blocks – I went with 3″ strips because you want to cut squares and I could get 4 out of a finished strips. If you went bigger, you would have to make more than one group of 4 strips – which you could do.
What size do you normally make for wheelchair quilts?

Adding those borders is a great way to make it rectangular. So often a border looks like an intentional add on and is distracting. I’m looking forward to seeing your finishes in those pretty fabrics.
I had to chuckle about Puff. Our daughter’s family has Chuck who they thought was a male until he had puppies. Glad all are getting along.
I think this additional borders at the top and bottom really work. Bob had a cat names Fred when I met him. He thought it was a boy…..until the vet said otherwise. I think cats are hard to tell what sex they are.
