It is time for another Happenings #12 In My Quilt Studio blog post. Gosh it has been a month since I did one. I like writing this probably more for me than you as I really enjoy going back and reading my old posts.
Sometimes I will read something and realize I never followed up or finished something.
I always have several quilt projects I’m working on and my longarm makes a perfect place to hang them. I am still waiting to get my new longarm, it has been 5 months since I ordered it.
My Quilt Studio
My quilt studio is my “happy” place. It may look messy or cluttered to others but I love spending time here.
Working on my July Quilt UFO
I started working on my July Quilt UFO, it was going fast as it is just one big gigantic quilt block. Well it would have been fast if I had paid attention to the directions.
Quilt Block Mistakes
I cut out all of the pieces but didn’t bother numbering them. I grabbed a pile of the sunflower squares and the white ones to make my half square triangles. I goofed and made them using the wrong size squares.
Luckily there was more fabric but not enough for me to cut all of the sunflower fabric again.
What To Do When You Make A Mistake Like This
I was 2 squares short. Well for me I just sewed the scraps together and got the size of squares that I needed. Now I could have tried to fussy cut and do a better job at matching but I figure when this quilt is all put together and quilted…it won’t be that noticeable.

Raising Up The Fridge
Notice Rusty in this photo? Our neighbors across the street are moving and they have been putting things out by the curb for people to take. We are on a fairly busy street and things like this go fast, we have even done it.
Yesterday I was in my office which is where I try to work while watching the squirrels and rabbits. Anyway, I looked up and saw this cabinet and a oak file cabinet sitting on the curb. I immediately ran downstairs and measured the space where my min fridge is, then I grabbed Bob and we went over.
I was tired of the fridge being so low to the ground and the cabinet was a perfect fit. Our neighbor came out and offered to use his cart and bring it over. He even helped put the fridge on top of it.
What do you think? It is a little taller that I would have liked but….the price was too good to pass up! The oak file cabinet was also gone by time we walked back to his house which was good because I probably would have taken it and I don’t need another file cabinet.
Clean Empty Closet
What do you think of this photo? I emptied everything and I mean everything out of this closet in the downstairs guest room. I haven’t seen it this empty since we moved in 3 years ago and NO we aren’t moving.
Our granddaughter is coming to stay with us for a while which is why I emptied out the closet and room. Boy do I have a lot of stuff! I bought 3 of those black plastic shelving units from Menards and put them in our storage room to hold more of my “stuff”.
Yummy Air Fryer Chicken Breasts
I’m not much for cooking, thank goodness Bob loves to cook but I enjoy looking at cooking websites and once in a while I want to try something. I saw this recipe at Pinch of Yum for Air Fryer Chicken Breasts so we tried it the other day along with our first batch of green beans from the garden and it was a winner! That first batch of green beans is always the best.
Bob normally doesn’t care for chicken breasts and he said he wouldn’t mind eating this once a week.
There isn’t breading on them, you use paprika, other seasonings and brown sugar which gives it that caramelized look.
Cute Squirrel

That chicken and green beans looked amazing. I saw Rusty through the sliding glass door. It’s going to take me at least a year to get my sewing and fabric storage straightened out. I’m working on it a little bit at a time. You did well with that free cabinet!!

Can you even believe that we have a week of July in the rear view mirror? I am a Summer “girl” and I can’t bear the thought of cold gray days ahead. It seems that you have been much busier in the studio than I! I like making the one big block quilts, particularly for lap quilt gifts for wheelchairs, floor mats for toddlers, and for me for protecting the backs of chairs. Pets and people require quilts, that is my premise for making them often! Love your squirrel, we have grays but we have a large colony of black ones, long hair, they look like cats from a distance. Every delivery person and visitor remarks at how unique they are. Well, enjoy that little fridge in it’s new perch and I am sure your guest room will be just right for your guest!
Good morning Cheryll, I am a winter person….the heat is too much for me and my basement quilt studio is freezing. when I’m down there i have to wear long pants and a sweatshirt. When I lived in Davenport, Iowa we had black squirrels, they are so beautiful. How neat that you have many of them! I don’t think I have seen them with long hair.

Your backing and binding calculator is one of the easiest and best I’ve used. For some reason the visual diagram didn’t show up, but the directions below explained it quite well. I’m very impressed and will definitely use it over any others! Thanks so much…for all you do!

I put a couple different measurements into the calculator and it seems right on. What a great help! For whatever reason, I struggle with figuring out the amount of yardage needed for backing. I don’t seem to have any trouble with binding, but the backing always has me rethinking. How can I download the calculator to my laptop?

I have a lot of wild life in my backyard too. It’s very relaxing to watch them. I even have a bunny who comes to me and I give it some stall crackers. I just love your sewing room. My goal is to have a better sewing room with more storage. I keep on finding stuff I bought and never did. I guess us quilters are all the same. We keep buying fabric to make something and sometimes don’t get back to it.

Hi Cindy, I think most quilters/crafters have more than they really need but like you sometimes I go through things and find something I forgot I had. That is almost like Christmas!
Connie, I can’t believe you’ve been in your house for 3 years. For a while it seemed like you were moving constantly. I love the fridge cabinet. When I make mistakes, sometimes it’s just not having a big enough piece of fabric to begin with, I piece and really never notice after the quilt is done. Thanks for a MOnday Happening. Hi Rita, I can’t believe we have been here that long either. We actually looked at a house a couple of months ago back along the river in Muscatine but the price was too high for th amount of work it needed. This house works perfectly for what I do so we’ll stay here for a while but…..who knows!
I’ve had to patch fabric in quilts before and you are right, once it is finished you have to look for the patch. Looks like a pretty UFO. Glad to hear Rusty did okay with the fireworks. Ours are never bothered by them for some reason. Great idea to raise the fridge. I’m hating lower anything these days!! I hope the new machine arrives soon.

I noticed the fridge right away . Our grandson is going to college next month and wants a mini fridge . This one has a freezer… he mightlike that for ice cream 😉 . The curb find fits perfectly & price is right. I don’t think you need to worry about the HST . Your “fix” looks pretty darn good , no one will know . ~_*

Thanks Vicki, It was supposed to be 3 months to get my longarm, thankfully I am using my old one to finish up things.
I am sure nobody will notice that the fabric is pieced in the HST block because it looks great. One of the first things I noticed when I opened this post was the fridge being higher. For sure the price was right and perfect fit. I really don’t think your studio looks that messy – they aren’t meant to be picture perfect! I say that as I sit at my sewing machine and look around my room and shake my head. My sewing room is a “everything happens in this room,” and it isn’t that big.
You are really observant Kate to notice the fridge being higher. This will work great, no more bending down. I finished piecing my UFO and it looks great.
