I finished up the Seahorses appliqued wall hanging which measures 18″ x 24″ and is a perfect size for your wall. How about putting this in your bathroom?

The other day I showed a little sneak peek at this Seahorses appliqued wall hanging that I made for my April Island Batik Ambassador project, have finished the pattern!

I pulled out my beautiful Island Batik Coastal Mist 2 ½” strips pack and some yardage and started creating a wall hanging.

Yardage for the Appliqued Seahorses Wall Hanging

  • Cream – (1) fat quarter or 3/8 yard
  • Light Teal – 1/2 yard
  • Dark Teal – 1/4 yard
  • (1) pack of coordinating 2½” strips
you can also use (7) 10″ squares or fabrics from your stash
  • backing and batting

The colors were perfect for this creation of seahorses in the sea.

Strip Pieced Applique

I really enjoy making fabric from strips of fabric and then using it for applique. It is also great to use for the background on a quilt project. I also made a crazy quilt mug rug from tiny strips of fabric.

I only used a few of the Coastal Mist batik strips for the seahorses. I have enough fabric left to make many more seahorses or…..maybe some other sea creatures. How about an octopus or shells?

I traced the seahorses onto HeatnBond Lite Iron-on and then applied it to the back of my fabric at an angle.

The piecing of the wall hanging was completed before I added the applique pieces.

I decided to do a free-motion applique using a color of Aurifil thread that matched my background fabric and just caught the edge of the applique design while I quilted the background.

Here is a closeup of the quilting. Instead of adding a tiny applique black pupil in the eyes, I used a Micron permanent marker.

This is a precious table runner made with applique patchwork cats that I am sure you will also like.

You can also piece squares together and then cut out your applique shape as I did in my Rabbit Applique pattern.
