Half Square TrianglesI really enjoy using triangles in my quilts and other projects, everyone has their favorite method and I recently reviewed Teach Me To Sew Triangles by Pat Sloan for Martingale where you learn 13 different ways to sew triangles.Pat-Sloan Teach me to sew Triangles

  • HST Half Square Triangles
  • QST Quarter Square Triangles
  • Side setting Triangles
  • Corner setting Triangles
  • Flying Geese
  • Equilateral Triangles

Over the years I have tried all of these techniques at one time or another but it is great to have all the different ways in one book. Half of Pat’s book is spent teaching you all the different ways to sew triangles. You will find plenty of large full-colored photos to help you learn each technique.Pat-Sloan Teach me to sew TrianglesWhich technique do I like the best? For me it actually depends on the project I am working on. Recently I worked on a quilt that had tons of half square triangles so I used the method that makes 8 half square triangles (HSTs) at one time.

I also make my half square triangles over-sized and then trim to the correct size. Pat gives plenty of information on doing this. The only time I don’t do this is if I am using my AccuQuilt GO!. I think I have all of their half square and quarter square dies.

Another great thing about her book is she gives directions using a basic ruler so you don’t need a special one for each technique.  You will also find 12 different quilt patterns ranging from small wall hangings to a bed size quilt. One of my favorites is this beautiful one called Jane’s Jewel Box.Janes Jewel Box Quilt PatternPat Sloan also does a lot of applique and it was neat to see this neat pattern included in the book. It is called Middleburg and the full-size applique templates are in the book.
