I finished the Open Gate Quilts January projects that were in the January subscription box.

Open Gate Quilts January Projects

This is my third subscription box from Open Gate Quilts and I have really enjoyed each one. This month the main project was this beautiful Lilac Lace wall hanging. It could also be a table topper.

Piecing Lilac Lace

This was a fun quilt to make. Here is a view of how the blocks were put together.

Open Gate Quilts January Unboxing

If you would like to see my unboxing, here it is – video opening the Open Gate Quilt box for January.

Open Gate Quilts 2nd Project

The second project was to make a 9 1/2 inch quilt block using the other group of fabrics.

Creating the Candle Mat

I cut the neutral fabric into strips for my quilt block and then appliqued a flower on it. I cut the block on the diagonal, you can see the lines that I will cut it at.

Applique

In the afternoon I am facing a lot of sun which accentuates the quilting better. I use my EverSewn Sparrow 25 for my applique, it does a wonderful job.

Here is my candle mat, I always enjoy small quilt projects!

Rusty

Rusty is really getting into modeling! I laid the quilts down on the floor and just as I was getting ready to take a photo, Rusty came over and sat right down! It is blurry but so cute!

Lilac Lace Backing

For the backing on the Lilac Lace, I picked 4 fat quarters from my stash. I think they make a great background.

15-91 Singer Sewing Machine

I used my vintage 15-91 Singer sewing machine to do the piecing and quilting on this. I only use my longarm for bigger quilt projects.

  5. Hi Connie,

I love both projects and wondered if you would be doing a written tutorial or pattern of the Lilac Lace project?
I am just getting into quilting on a small scale and love watching your videos. I have purchased a few of your patterns and am excited to get started on some of the projects.
    Thank you for doing this.
    Kind regards,
    Carol

I really like the Lilac Lace small quilt. Nice color selection and a very attractive pattern. Rusty is actively and enthusiastically modeling to ensure he does his part to earn his board and keep. He is doing his part for the success of the family business. We all knew he was a smart dog! Good boy, Rusty!

  7. So pretty projects! Nice sewing during this extra cold spell! I’ve never heard of Open Gate Quilting, I’ll take a look. Thanks for sharing!

  8. The Lilac Lace, and candle mat are both very lovely. Thanks for sharing both of them.
Rusty is secure with his modeling job and very smart to know he is always included when the quilts are placed on the floor. Give him a hug for all of us.
Prayers for all our Southern friends affected by the recent snow storms, those in CA with wild fires, and those still recovering from Hurricane Helene.

    1. Just read one of the replies from Northern friends, also affected by the cold and snow. Prayers for them also.
      Blessings to all.

I love that Lilac Lace quilt, it’s so georgous.
It’s -2 here in the Buffalo area. The schools all around western new york have been closed yesterday and today. We keep getting hit with snow storms and bitter cold.
Rusty is a ham when it comes to the camera. My Happy was like that.
Thank you for using my new email address. I’m still going round and round with Spectrum.

  10. I love the lilac and lace table toper, and also the appliqued smaller square too. They look like they are some very fun projects. I am fascinated at you using vintage sewing machine to quilt. I thought they only did straight stitch

    1. Hi Darla, my vintage machines only do straight stitch, I also have a newer sewing machine that I use only for applique. I sometimes do a freemotion applique with my old machines.

  11. Such beautiful fabrics in that box. Both projects made perfect use of them – just lovely!!

  12. Love both projects! I really like the colors in Lilac Lace. The quarter square triangles really set it off–kind of makes it twinkle.
Rusty looks quite proud to be your model. 🙂

  13. I love both quilts! So pretty. What a great subscription box. And as always, it’s great to see Rusty in the picture.

  14. Lilac Lace is beautiful!

  15. Oh I love those projects!! They are just the right sizes to make and quilt on a domestic machine! Love your model!!

  16. Both projects are beautiful! And Rusty, you are the cutest little model.
