January Blues Applique

It is a 15 inch x 17 inch wall hanging. I made the center square as part of a block from a pattern but didn’t read the directions carefully and it wasn’t right. Instead of tearing it out……I just made something else. I used my Sizzix Big Shot to cut out some little flowers and free motion appliqued them to it.
Closeup of free motion applique.
Here you can see the back. Sometimes I use paper for a stabilizer and sometimes….like here I just quilt on the batting. I don’t know if you can see or not but I zig-zagged some batting scraps together.
Then I added the backing and did some stipple quilting.
Save this for later!
Don't worry, I promise not to spam you.
When it was time to add my binding I had a sleepy eyed assistant helping me. Notice he is lying on one of my Easy Street quilt tops…..so much for the pressing I did. I used my 15-91 Singer sewing machine for the entire piece.
I cut 5 inch squares and folded them diagonally for each of the corners on the back so the wall hanging can be hung vertically or horizontally with a thin dowel.
I’m going to call this January Blues
It has been some time since I participated in the Project Quilting but I am hoping to do it this year! Here is more information about Project Quilting 2024.
Sometimes I like to have a little fun in Photoshop and see what something would look like in a different color. Here is the same wall hanging in pinks and in teals.

This is so beautiful! I think I will have to try out some of this with my Big Shot :)) I only have one dye but it is a pretty one of flowers and leaves. Thank you for sharing your project and showing a close up of your stitching. Ellyx
I like your little wall hanging. It is an interesting take on square in a square.
Totally amazing, Connie. I just love it. The flowers are great.
Your 'assistant' looks as though he's about ready to doze off. lol
Such a great Square in a Square project you came up with – love it! I also like it in the reds and greens, too – neat application.
How cheerful! Perfect for a cold dreary January day. You get so much accomplished – I'm in awe!
So beautiful…Thanks for the full run through! Nice to see you had such great help!
I love everything about this piece, and thank you for the reminder of to make it possible to hang a small quilt without doing an entire sleeve.

What fun flowers!
I love sewing with blues in January! I hang a lot of my blue quilts that month – just makes me think of snow and snowmen and cold, clear, blue skies :*) Not that I like the cold, but if one has to have it, then one must learn to celebrate it, right?
This is adorable Connie! I love the colors you chose. I have too many projects to join another. But boy; I hate missing out on some of them!!
lol
Beautiful!
Wow! I love that free-motion applique technique!
Your first challenge project looks great! I can't believe you finished already! I am still working away on mine.
Very Nice. I also like your your idea of 5 inch squares to use as your sleeve.
Great little quilt in blue…and in every other color! You're so multi-talented both in quilting and in photo-shop! Way to go!
This is really cute… the applique flowers are a perfect addition! I used your corner tabs on my last small wall hanging and it will be standard from now on.
