This month the challenge for Island Batik Ambassadors was to make a stuffed animals using a pattern from Funky Friends Factory. I made Plattie Platypus Funky Friend which is the simplest Funky Friends pattern and he turned out cute.

Plattie Platypus

It has been a long, long time since I made a stuffed animal so I wanted to make something that was easy. Pauline at Funky Friends Factory has all kinds of adorable animals to make and she notes which ones are easy. She also has a free teddy bear called Honey Teddy that you can get.

Cutting Out Plattie Platypus

The directions said to glue the pattern pieces to thick paper but I just carefully laid the pieces on my batik fabrics and cut them out with my Olfa 18mm rotary cutter. I don’t use this cutter very often but it is perfect for small pieces like this.

Batik Fabrics

I used a batik called Iceberg for the body and a fun floral that was part of a Stack Builder 5-inch strips for the bill and feet.

Platypus Feet

My sewing might not have been perfect as you can see but once the feet were added to the body, it looked fine. I’m not very good at stitching tiny things anymore.

Plattie Is Only 12 Inches

Plattie Platypus is only 12-inches and was the first “Aussie Mates” Funky Friend. Rusty is wondering what I am doing.

Rusty & Plattie

Rusty doesn’t look very happy to be sitting next to Plattie Platypus. Yep, his look is definitely saying “Let’s get this over with”.

Plattie With A Miniature Quilt

I have been printing sublimation quilts on fabric and I’ll be sharing more on this soon. Do you recognize the quilt? That is my Hopscotch quilt. I use Electric Quilt 8 to design and then print out my quilt.

Plattie Platypus Was Fun To Make

Plattie Platypus was fun to make, and so cute! Thanks to Pauline at Funky Friends Factory for this cute stuffed toy pattern, Island Batik, Aurifil Thread, and Schmetz needles for providing the materials for the project. Make sure you check out what the other Ambassadors make for their challenge.

Hi Connie: Plattie Platypus reminds me of years ago sewing lots of stuffed animals and toys for the Littles. Plattie is very cute. Yes, Rusty looks a little disgruntled. LOL

  2. Lorena Boutin says:

Rusty definitely doesn’t look happy with Plattie. He is too cute and so is Plattie.

  3. Awww. He’s really cute and looks great in those fabrics next to that wonderful quilt. Don’t think Rusty is quite sure of it!

I love Plattie! I’m not sure Rusty calls him friend, just yet, though! LOL Very cute and love the fabric you used!

It would be better to embroider the Platypus eyes instead of buttons especially if it is a toy for Rusty. He could chew the eyes off and swallow them which could cause health problems for him. He is such a pretty dog.

Hello Connie, I love how you made “ Plattie” ….I probably will never see a platypus in real life, as they are very shy and are in the water a lot of the time…..even though I live in Australia.
I read that you will be putting a roof “ under” the decking…..I think it would be better if the roof went over the decking. I love little Rusty, he is the dog I would want. Love reading your news, every time you post a news letter.
    Regards Helena.

Cute, cute!! I made her manatee (of course I did, we live in Crystal River, winter home to about 1000 (!) manatees!!) and loved it. I used grey minky and he’s sooo cuddly. Then I gave him away, lol. Love that Rusty, he’s so expressive!
