Patriotic Wall Hanging

I just finished a fast and easy patriotic wall hanging using fabric and templates gifted to me from Missouri Star Quilt Company. This was fun to make.

Patriotic Wall Hanging

The finished size of my wall hanging is 25 inches x 25 inches. I did pull some yellow scraps from my stash.

Patriotic Wall Hanging

Time And Again Layer Cake

The Time And Again layer cake had colors that were perfect for a patriotic quilt project. I also used Heat n Bond Lite to trace the template shapes. I always like to remove some Heat n Bond Lite from the inside of the shapes so I don’t have a stiff applique.

Missouri Star Quilt Co

An Oops

It has been a while since I did applique where you have to reverse the shape. Notice the S – I had to redo that.

USA correct

Getting Ready to Applique

I cut a 19-inch square of white Kona cotton to use as the backing for my applique. I didn’t realize until I went to add the border that the layer cake actually had cream not white in it. I did a blanket stitch applique and I always add newsprint paper behind my fabric before I start appliqueing. This is a lightweight paper that is easy to tear off when you’re finished.

Wall hanging before applique

Adding a Border

When I was finished with the applique, I trimmed my piece to a 16½ x 16½ inch square.

For the border I picked several of the 10-inch squares and cut them in half. Then I sub-cut (4) 2½ x 5 inch strips to get an assortment of colors.

Using a 1/4 inch seam allowance I sewed (8) of the 2½ x 5 inch strips together. I repeated this 3 more times using a total of (32) strips.

I also had a cream 10 inch square that I was able to use to cut (4) 5 inch squares for the corners.

Adding borders

Backing

Once I had the top done I used some of the other 10 inch squares for my backing. I sewed 3 rows of 3 together, added my batting and quilted the wall hanging on my vintage 15-91 Singer sewing machine.

backing fabric

I happened to have a fat quarter of several of the fabrics in this line and I was able to cut my 2½ inch binding strips from one of them. I also cut (2) 5 inch squares that I folded diagonally and added to the top corners when I applied the binding.

25 inch Patriotic Wall Hanging

This will be a nice addition to my Patriotic placemats that I made last year. You can find the tutorial here for them.

I have done some appliqué but never with letters and never on my quilts. Thank you for reminding me how the letters should face when you cut them out, so I wouldn’t have backward letters.

  121. I love your projects, thank you for sharing your talent!

  122. I have been following MSQC with their unique creations on both YouTube and Instagram. And I love following your posts. Your adventures and your projects are always great. I recently finished a Reading Pillow for my granddaughter with her name appliquéd on the book pocket. I need to get busy on more for my great nieces and great nephews next. As a retired Army nurse I love anything patriotic, although my husband would always claim my favorite color is OD green! Your Wall Hanging would be perfect by my front door.
