It is still hot here so I spent most of my time in my studio over the weekend. Since that is my favorite place to be I enjoyed it.

Monday Happenings 5 In My Studio

I really like to work on more than one quilt project at a time and you can see so of the things on my cutting table. I have 3 quilt patterns to write but sometimes it is fun to just “play” so that is what I did yesterday.

Woven Star Block Fail

In my last post I share what was in the Fat Quarter Shop Sew Sampler box for July 2024. Saturday morning I spent some time remember how to foundation paper piece. For some reason it never sticks in my brain but after a few mistakes it usually comes back to me.

The little 4 1/2 inch block is a fail. I wasn’t supposed to use the 30’s charm pack fabrics for the background. Once I had this block done I realized I had made one of the blue sections too big.

Five Stars Table Runner

I made four of the woven stars blocks and one section of the Five Stars table runner and decided I would just make a table topper. You know I really like fast and easy quilt projects. The 4 inch Woven Star Foundation Papers are available and include directions to make the blocks. The Five Star table runner pattern will be available soon.

Rusty

Rusty was sweet enough to pose with my new table topper. Actually he was a little shocked that I laid it on him. Such a sweetie!

Vintage Binding Fabric

I heard that anything over 20 years is considered vintage. The fabric I used for the binding has been in my stash since my craft show days which is over 25 years ago. It isn’t a perfect match but good enough.

Five Stars

It was fun to take photos of the Five Stars table topper out by my flowers.

Charm Pack Crispies

There was a link to a free pattern called Charm Pack Crispies in the Sew Sampler box and I decided to use the rest of the charm squares from the pack I had opened. These are fast and easy half square triangles made from 5-inch squares.

I am old enough that these fabrics look like some that I used when I was first learning to quilt and NO, I’m not from the 30’s. I may open one more charm square pack and make enough blocks for a small quilt.

Poetic Bouquet

It is time to get working on my August Island Batik ambassador quilt project. I think I will use Poetic Bouquet which is a beautiful collection of 10-inch squares for my miniature quilt project.

Foundation Paper Piecing

Since my brain is still remembering how to do foundation paper piecing, I decided to pull out one of my very first quilt patterns that I designed for Island Batik. I don’t have it for sale right now as all of the photos are black & white and I want to redo it.

I am also resizing it for my September challenge and will make 2 inch blocks.

So far I have the center done and am now starting on the next row. I did a mockup of the fabrics I’ll be using.

Moda Scrap Bag

I was watching a video on YouTube yesterday and Cathy from My Hobby Home was showing their Moda Scrap Bags which reminded me that I had bought several a couple of years ago. Where does time go?? Here is one of them.

Green Fairy Quilts sells them and I ordered 2 more plus a couple more of their daily deals. Here is their information about the Moda Scrap Bags.

So what's in a Moda Scrap Bag? It's assembled by Moda.
It includes strips leftover from the cutting of precuts.
It may be all one collection of Moda Prints, it may include a couple different Prints
or even Bella Solids.
There's no way to tell which prints or colors will be in each one.
Basically - it's a surprise waiting to be opened by you!
*Will include a varying number of varying widths, sizes and lengths of strips.

Sunday Stroll by Bonnie & Camille

This one is Sunday Stroll by Bonnie & Camille. The pieces are about 32 inches long and are selvages between 1 1/2 to 3 inches wide.

I will be curious to see if the Green Fairy Quilts Moda Scraps bags are about the same now.

Making Fabric From Scraps

I sewed several of the strips together and will make fabric from them.

What am I going to do with the fabric? I’m not sure yet but I’ll share it with you. I had forgotten these were in my stash and now I have ordered more!

Gigantic Cherry Tomato Plant

We are still amazed at how big this cherry tomato plant is! Builder Bob put a brace in to hold it up and we are hoping it won’t fall down.

Roasted Cherry Tomatoes

Right after I took the photo of the gigantic cherry tomato plant, I picked a big bowl of them and used the recipe I mentioned in my newsletter. You wash and dry the cherry tomatoes, then prick them so they don’t explode, put them on a cookie sheet and drizzle with olive oil, I added so minced garlic. Set oven to 350 and cook for 45 minutes.

Once they were done I ate a small bowl of them before freezing the rest. They are so good!

Sharing My Flowers

All of the flowers in the next photos were started from seeds! I have my little indoor green house and I am still amazed that I grew these! These are straw flowers.

Marigold Flowers

Marigolds are my favorite flowers as they are so easy to take care of. I think these are bigger and more beautiful than Marigold plants I have purchased in the past.

  1. The little table topper is just adorable. I’ve been considering that Crispies pattern too for those charm packs. So cute. But I like the braided star too. Decisions to make . . .

  2. I enjoy your Monday Happenings!
Your patterns are so nice and have great prices.

I love all the things you design and make but I am so used to seeing only batik fabrics with you, it is almost weird to see prints! Love seeing them. I have tons of print fabrics, and would always think when I saw your lovely creations in batiks, I wonder how that would look in a printed fabric. Love seeing what you are doing now.
And your garden–amazing! Thank you for all you do and share.

    1. Thanks Barbara, I love working with batiks but have decided it will be fun to work with some prints again and also use up some of my older stash and also get some new!

Hi Connie Dear: You have the most amazing fabrics and you know how I love them all. Rusty does look a little bewildered with the table topper laid on him. Keep Cutting and Sewing and Quilting My Friend.
Your tomatoes are beautiful and look delicious roasted. Love your flowers also. Hot and sunny here at 108F.

That’s a great way to use scraps. I love your star. I will be making some soon. Thanks for sharing.

  6. Hi Connie,
I look forward to your updates on your quilting and gardening. I appreciate the time you put into your blog. It is so nice to retreat from the “noise” and turmoil of the outside world to the simple things like sewing and watching nature and enjoying our fur babies. Blessings to you and yours!

What a cute little table topper and Rusty is such a sweetheart! He looks at you with adoring eyes…even if you did startle him by placing the little quilt on him. He didn’t seem to mind too much! Have a great week, Connie!

Hello! Your post reminded me that I have a Moda Scrap Bag too! I bought it and then didn’t know what I wanted to do with it. It’s Larkspur by 3 Sisters, so I’ve had it awhile. I’ll be excited to see what you do with yours. Next year I think I will start some flowers from seeds. Your flowers look so happy! I enjoy your blog, the You Tube video you made and of course pictures of Rusty. Joyce

    1. Thanks Joyce, I was like you when I watch her video and realized I had two of the scrap bags. I also have a huge bucket of selvages. You know if nothing else, a pillow would be cute!

  9. Enjoying your Monday comments, hearing what is happening in your life and seeing pictures of Rusty! I have since I joined, although I am probably a late comer. I missed the pictures when you changed your format so this is nice. All the best. Earla.

  10. Connie,
I love your flowers! They are very beautiful. Your cherry tomato plant is crazy. I’m going to try that recipe with some of my cherry tomatoes. Thank you for sharing.

I like the “vintage fabric.” You used for the binding. I think it really brings it together. Have a great day. Robbie.

    1. Thanks Robbie, I found a good use for that “vintage” 25 year old fabric! I’ll be doing more cherry tomatoes this way as I froze a small bag and thawed them out to use in an omelet and they were tasty.
