Holly Jolly Strip Lap Quilt Tutorial

We had a couple of cool days and I decided to make a flannel quilt. Of course the weather went back into the 80’s but I am tickled to have this quilt finished!

I am using the Holly Jolly Flannel 2½-inch strips that I received from Missouri Star Quilt Company. There were 40 strips and I sewed 4 strips together and then sub cut that into 8½-inch blocks for a Split Rail quilt.

I have a tutorial on making the Split Rail Quilt here.

If you like videos, here is one that shows me making this quilt.

Choosing the colors

I was able to choose a green, red, white and black flannel strip for 8 of strip sets. For the last two I only had red and black strips.

The strips are sewn together with a 1/4-inch seam allowance and when pressed should measure 8½-inches.

Strip Sets

Here are some of the strip sets, hanging on my long arm railing.

Design Wall

Here you can see how I placed the black and red quilt blocks in the corners. I had 6 rows of 6 quilt blocks for a nice size lap quilt.

If you used two Jelly Rolls you could make a quilt that was 72 quilt blocks which would be 64-inches x 72-inches.

I had several yards of a cream flannel in my stash which I used for the backing and binding. For batting, I used Hobbs Tuscany Cotton Wool Blend in Natural.

Rusty Approved

Of course Rusty approved of this quilt, thanks Rusty!

  1. I would use the Wildflower jelly roll and make a log cabin patterned quilt. Those colors are so beautiful!

I loved the holiday fabric you used. You can do the same quilt in the others jelly rolls too. The fall color’s was just as pretty as the Christmas one also.

  3. I would love to make a special little girl a throw with the pretty strip set!

I would like to do this pumpkin pattern I just saw using that fabric because it doesn’t have orange in it and I don’t like orange but I think it would look wonderful in this pattern.
