Another Disappearing 9 Patch

Crazy Quilt
Do you remember when I made the beautiful Crazy Quilt using the Earth Essence Island Batik Collection? I love the colors in this collection and I wanted to make a table topper using the fabrics again.
You can find the Earth Essence collection at Shabby Fabrics and Creekside Quilts.

Island Batik It’s All Up To You Challenge
For December, our Island Batik challenge was to make whatever we wanted. This is always my favorite type of challenge! It has been so much fun being an Ambassador for Island Batik in 2025.
Thanks to Hobbs Quilt Batting, Oliso, Aurifil, and Island Batik for Lumin Fabrics for the items that they have sent me as an ambassador this year.

Earth Essence Batik Table Topper
This table topper is made of 4 quilt blocks that start out as 9 patch blocks.
The size is approximately 24″ x 24″.

Make 9 Patch Blocks
Choose 6 different fabrics for your blocks. You will make 2 of block A and 2 of block B.
BLOCK A
- Light Fabric – cut 8 – 5″ squares
- Dark Fabric – cut 8 – 5″ squares
- Center Fabric – cut 2 – 5″ squares

BLOCK B
- Dark Fabric – cut 8 – 5″ squares
- Light Fabric – cut 8 – 5″ squares
- Center Fabric – cut 2 – 5″ squares

Sew the 9 Patch
Using a 1/4″ seam allowance make the 9 patch blocks. I forgot to take a picture of the 9 patch blocks before cutting.
Block A
Measure 2 1/4″ from the center on the left and right side and cut.
Next take the center part and cut 2 1/4″ from the center on the top and bottom.
Don’t cut through the first pieces you cut.

Repeat this for block B.

Now the fun part
Now the magic happens, take the center from Block A and replace the Block B center. Also take the center from Block Band move it to the center of Block A.
Sew the top and bottom sections together first. Use a 1/4″ seam allowance throughout.
Next sew the sides – the sides are longer, match up the seams.

Trim the blocks
Trim the excess to make your blocks square.

Table Topper
Sew the disappearing 9 patch blocks together to make the table topper and quilt as desired.

A beautiful table topper
I actually made 2 more blocks as I was thinking about a lap quilt but I didn’t have enough fabric. I may have to make a pillow out of them.

More Ideas
Last week I shared several other quilt projects made this way using the Rustic Riches collection, I even made some mug rugs so I’ll be sharing them soon.
I then realized the fabrics were from my May challenge and the first 2025 ambassador box. I still plan on sharing these with you soon and also show another way to make this quilt block.

I love this table topper. That said, I need a ROUND TABLE TOPPER. I haven’t found one so I guess I’m asking if you could design one. TIA.
Thank you so much for the pdf of the disappearing 9 patch! I ran right over to Etsy and purchased it and another of your patterns.
Very cute, Connie! I do love those disappearing blocks!
Hi Connie
Would love the PDF pattern. I took pictures but I’d love the pattern to make a quilt. I don’t have a table. My dining room is my sewing room. Love the fabric you used. Please let me know if you have pdf. Thank you

I agree. PDF please. What a pretty table topper.
PDF please of this disappearing 9 patch. Have made several of your patterns and would love to make this 9 patch as well.
Yes, I remember the beautiful Crazy Patch quilt with these fabrics. Love the Dis. 9-patch topper you made. These are some of my favorite colors. This pattern could be made in any colors for any seasons or holidays- very versatile. All the other projects shown are beautiful also. The wooden deer in the corner of your room is lovely.
Missed seeing Rusty today- he must be on vaca!
Thanks Beverly, Rusty appears in my Monday Studio post.
How much yardage of each color do you need?
Hi Vickie, I used scraps but a fat quarter or 1/4 yard of each fabric works.
Thank you, Connie!
love the table topper. I”m going to make it in Christmas fabric. Thank you and Merry Christmas.
That would be beautiful Sandra!
