Flowing Meadow Dresden Quilt
I had fun making my Flowing Meadow Dresden quilt and there were a few mistakes along the way that I will share with you.
Dresden Plate Blog Hop
Today is my day on the Dresden Plate blog hop! All of the Island Batik Ambassadors are sharing quilts this month using Summer 2024 batik collections. The quilts will use the Dresden Plate design and will all be different and beautiful!
Pamela Boatright from PamelaQuilts will also be sharing her Dresden Plate quilt today.
Be sure to visit Island Batik’s blog for their giveaways during this blog hop and also check each day to see which ambassadors are sharing their quilts.
Keep reading to see my giveaways!
Flowing Meadow Collection
I am using the Flowing Meadow Collection which has 20 beautiful batiks in it!
Dresden Plate Die from AccuQuilt
I used the AccuQuilt GO! Dresden Plates die. I have had this die for a long time and it felt good to use it again.
I cut 5½” x the width of the fabric strips from all 20 pieces of the Flowing Meadow collection.
Dresden Plate Pointed Pieces
I didn’t have a plan but I thought it would be better to just cut and make a whole bunch of the pointed pieces.
Would you believe I had enough pieces to make 15 Dresden Plates! I used a neutral color called Sand of Aurifil 50wt thread and a Schmetz 80/12 Microtex Sharp needle for my piecing.
Neutral Batiks for the Background
I had this bundle of Naturally Neutral Batik Solids Fat Quarters by Island Batik and I decided to use them for the background of each Dresden Plate. These were fat quarters so I just cut off 4 inches to make 18 inch squares. I needed 12 quilt blocks for my quilt.
Completing the Dresden Plate Blocks
I made 12 quilt blocks for my quilt and then started sewing the Dresden Plates to the backgrounds. My longarm came in handy for holding the fabrics and blocks. At this point I had all my blocks but I decided to go ahead and make up the last 3 blocks. I know myself and if I put the small plates in a bag…..I would probably never made anything with them.
Look at the beautiful pile of batiks leftover from cutting with my AccuQuilt cutter.
Neutral Blocks For Quilt
This photo doesn’t really show you the different neutral batik backgrounds but they look beautiful in the finished quilt. Don’t be afraid of mixing neutral fabrics, here is an example of a block made from many different fabrics.
65″ x 86″ Quilt
Once I had all of the blocks pieced and sew together, I used Hobbs Heirloom 80/20 Bleached Cotton Batting. The size was 90″ x 108″ and I will have a sizeable piece of batting left for another quilt project.
Vibrant Colors
None of my photos show just how vibrant and beautiful the colors are in this collection.
Rusty Approved
Rusty was happy to pose with my quilt, what a change from 2 years ago when he would cringe if you pointed a camera or phone at him.
AccuQuilt Special!
I want to quickly mention that I love my AccuQuilt GO! Big and right now they are having a sale that is unbelievable!
You can get the Electric GO! Big, the 9-inch Mix & Match Qube, 2½-inch Strip Cutter, Flying Geese die, cutting mats, quilting ruler and pattern book for 44% off!
Mistakes Happen
I want to share a closeup photo of one of the Dresden Plate quilt blocks and see if you notice anything wrong.
When I started making my Dresden Plates I didn’t read the instructions to see how MANY pointed pieces went into a block. I made about 4, they laid perfectly flat and I have no idea why I decided to count the pieces.
21 Pointed Pieces instead of 20
3 of my blocks had 21 pieces, only one had 20. What to do? I carefully made another block and it had 21 pieces and laid perfectly flat. So I decided to go with 21 for all of the blocks.
Another Mistake
When I started this quilt I had no definite plan, that is the way I work most of the time. I wanted to use the Neutral fat quarters which are 18 x 22 so I squared the blocks to 18 inches square.
When it was time to add sashing, my plan was to use 2½-inch squares so I cut them and started piecing them together. Can you see where this is going? To make this work I really needed 18½-inch background squares.
Improvise
It was time to improvise! I cut 2-inch x 18-inch strips of the dark blue batik and used that for the vertical sashing.
Horizontal Sashing
Lucky for me the horizontal sashing worked using the 2½-inch squares! I was able to use 27 of them.

I love your Dresden quilt! Is there a pattern?
Your Dresden Plate quilt is gorgeous! I would use the extra block as the center of a medallion quilt, then add borders from the leftover fabrics.
Connie that quilt is so beautiful. Thank you for showing it.
Your quilt is gorgeous! And it’s good to know that Rusty approves. I have a dog that is terrified of cameras and I always thought that was the strangest thing. It’s good to know that other dogs have had this fear and that it can be overcome! Yaay Rusty! Thank you for sharing this gorgeous fabric. I would make dresden blocks to go on tote bags. My friends have enough zipper pouches and rope bowls (probably more than they want :)) so for this Christmas I am making tote bags for everyone.
Great quilt. I would probably make a strip or charm quilt with the fabric. I am in USA.
This is gorgeous! I love how the backgroud of each block is subtly different and in the up-close pictures it makes the colors pop. I think I would make it into a couch quilt with the block being the center.
I love the Dresden Plate quilt pattern and the colors you choose. Have you thought about doing one in a Christmas theme?
Well your did a beautiful job considering you didn’t have a plan! Your quilt is lovely. I would probably make strip pieced placemats or a table runner with your leftovers! I like scrappy quilts so having the scraps always works for me..
I wlould to make some leaves and tablerunners.
I think that I would make a Tree Of Life quilt. Those beautiful fabrics just speak fall trees to me! Love your Dresden Plate quilt! That is on my to-do list for someday.
I love how your quilt turned out! I have never made this particular block. I have been wanting to make some seasonal pillows so maybe would use the fabrics for that. USA
Connie, I really enjoy your blog. I’ve been following for several years now. If I won the fabric I’d most likely make a strip quilt or a patchwork. I love randomness!
I love that pattern! I live in the US.
What a fabulous quilt! I would love to make a table runner for my sister l- she would adore the fabrics!! Thank you for your lovely blog- tips and tutorials!

your blog!
I would use them to make a fall table runner

I live in Plamondon,Alberta Canada and love Batiks and all things free. thank you for the postings !
Hi Connie. I have admired your work for quite awhile. I would very much love to win any of your quilt patterns. If I won the Island Batik fabrics I might very well make the Dresden Plate quilt since I have a template. Unfortunately I do not have an Accuquilt. I live in the U.S.
I really love the colors in those fabrics. Your Dresden Plate quilt is gorgeous. I think I would try and make a table topper with the block and fabrics. (I also noticed how well the fabrics go with Rusty’s coat.)
Your Dresden Plate quilt has the WOW factor! I love it, especially the photo with it draped over the railing. I especially loved the scrappy vertical sashing combined with the navy horizontal sashing. I noticed it right away, it’s very striking and will use your ‘mistake’ in one of my upcoming quilts. Due to your emails, I’m using my batiks again and I’m currently working on a scrappy Christmas quilt. So thank you for the inspiration. If I were to win I’d make a pillow with the block and a lap-sized quilt using one of the charm quilt patterns from Fat Quarter Shop. I’ve had my eye on several.
Love the batiks, love the colors, love how your pattern came out. I would make a mini dresden plate table topper. If I am lucky enough to win, I would love a Twilight Dragonfly pattern. Thanks. I live in the United States.
I love your Dresden Plate. I don’t think I would make that with the fabric but I would make a lap quilt for donation. Yes I live in the US. Jmikebalou (at) aol (dot) com
I love Dresden plate quilts. I made one years ago and it was fun.
I would adore your scraps as I am making a scrap quilt for a son and his wife. They couldn’t decide colors so I will make one with all the colors. 😀
Hi Connie- greetings from Texas (sometimes it feels so big that it could be a country on its own)! I follow your blog and love seeing your marvelous designs, and of course, I adore seeing photos of Rusty and how he is settling in to your family. Your Dresden quilt with the Island Batiks is absolutely awesome! I especially like all the vibrant colors. I love that quilt and the mini scattered quilt design you made. Please continue to show photos of Rusty and all your wonderful designs!
The Dresden plate quilt is just beautiful! I think I would make an Irish chain quilt with the Dresden plate block in the middle! I worked the polls today in Georgia (5:30 am to 8:30 pm) so I am very tired!
My new cat…needs a kitty quilt!
Love your Dresden Plate quilt! I have made the block once, for a sampler quilt and want to make a whole quilt out of them.

I live in Alberta, Canada. Your quilt is beautiful.
Hi Connie – I love the batiks and would love to make the Mirage Log Cabin quilt. Thanks Katie in Helena, AL
Your quilt is very beautiful Connie. The fabrics look really gorgeous in the way you placed them. I love the Dresden Plate block. It has become one of my favorite over the years so I would love to make my new great grand-daughter a quilt like this. She would have a beautiful quilt to cherish.
Your quilt is beautiful! I just recently started to use batkis and love them. I would make one of your many quilt patterns that I have. Thank you.
Hi Connie
I’d love to win your patterns! They are so well written and easy to follow. I live in Oregon, USA.
Your quilt is beautiful! I think the fabric would be wonderful in a landscape quilt!
Hi Connie, I’m also a lover of Batik’s. I’m definitely adding a Dresden plate to my list of quilts to make. Love your creativity. Lee-Anne in Perth, Australia.
I live in Canada. Your quilt looks great and the batiks are beautiful!
I live in the USA. I think those fabrics would make a great journal cover or a table runner.
Patricia from Australia,
My first dresdens are also “imperfectly” beautiful. I made two half plates for the ends of a runner. It looks fabulous, Nobody notices, so I don’t point it out….
I live in Australia and would love to win the Dresden Plate give-away. I would use it to make a pillow which I will donate to my favourite charity – The Salvation Army – for one of their auctions. Their funds help people in need and provide a safe haven for many homeless people.
Your Dresden Plate quilt is absolutely spectacular, Connie. It looks amazing with the dark borders.
Rusty has given it the “paw stamp of approval”.
This is just stunning! I would love the fabric to make purses for my granddaughters. They love batik fabric too and have a few things I’ve made for them with it. Beautiful creation!
I love these batiks! If I were fortunate enough to win a give-away, it would motivate me to get back my quilting mojo. My husband had a heart attack last winter. Since then, I have been the caregiver and haven’t had the time or energy to do one of my favorite hobbies.
It’s so good to see Rusty’s little face on your posts.
This fabric (both colors) are beautiful. Keep up the good work. I never miss reading your emails.
Verlene
If I were to win your Dresden block and the Island Batik fabrics I would use your block as the center of a table topper. I would add quarter dresdens to the corners. I would make a coordinating table runner for my coffee table. I then would make mini Dresden pincushions for my sewing group friends.
The second giveaway: Mirage, Quarter Spin, Mini Scattered
I live in So. California, USA
I would like to try your scattered pattern. I live in Texas, USA
Your blocks are gorgeous. The island batik fabric is so pretty I think I would make placemats, am thinking I need to retire some of mine that are several years old and getting faded from washing. Rusty is a good sport to help you when you photograph your projects
I love Batik fabric. Your Dresden Plate quilt looks lovely and you made good use of all those beautiful pieces that I watched you unpack.
I live in the North Island of New Zealand.
Your quilt is beautiful! Interesting that you can make the dresdens with 21 sections and get them to lay flat. You might have some special skills! The fabrics are gorgeous and I would like to use them for a fall tablerunner. They seem fall-ish to me.
I would love the leftover block and fabric left over from your Dresden quilt. I would use the block for a pillow cover and the left over fabric combined with my batik stash to make a queen size quilt for my bed. Thanks for the chance to win such fabulous prizes. I live in the United States.
Your quilt is beautiful. A pillow for my couch with your block and use pieces for the border and possible the pillow back.
Love the Dresden quilt.
Would love the Dragonfly quilt pattern.
I live in Alberta, Canada.
Thank you for all your interesting posts.
These fabrics would be perfect for a fall table runner. Love your dresden quilt.
Simply want to complement you on a spectacular finish to a completely unique rendition of a Dresden! It’s gorgeous, and Rusty is so handsome next to it! Fantastic all around, Connie!
Love the Dresden Plate quilt. I live in Manitoba, Canada
I love the Dresden plate and those colors shout “FALL” to me. That said, I would definitely make a throw and matching pillow that would be placed in the family room where everyone could enjoy them!!!
Good to know that you’re human! I’ve never made anything without multiple ‘design variations’!
That sashing has such a great effect. I love your dog/quilt photo!
Your stitching and quilting is wonderful, but I don’t like the mix of dark and light batiks in this collection.
Such a pretty quilt, I love seeing it hang over your railing. I think they might just be the right colors for my turkey feathers table runner.
Beautiful autumn colours that glow, and Rusty, a perfect model right there.
I am way down south in New Zealand, where our spring days continue, with cool nights, flowers starting to bloom, and sewing is so good with those extra daylight hours.
I absolutely want to make the Dresden Quilt. The batiks are beautiful! I love how you share your mistakes. I always say that my “mistakes” are a new/different way to achieve the desired result! Happy belated birthday to Sweet Rusty!
For the drawing for the pattern, I would have to say Vibrant Joy, since I already have three of the five patterns. I obviously like your work!😊
Connie, your quilt is gorgeous. Should I win, I would make a table runner or a table top for my daughter and her new home.
Hi Connie, I am a US citizen and would love to choose from your patterns. Enjoy your week.
Hi Connie, thanks for the giveaway opportunity. I love those colors and would probably use them for a small table topper project or mug rugs.
Photos really do not do justice to this collection, I had trouble photographing them as well! I love that Rusty is such a good model now, he looks great on this quilt, the colors suit him well!
I have never worked with batiks before and I think this would be a great opportunity to do that. I think that I would go with a small quilt, a wall hanging, something along that line. The colors are amazing.
What I would do with the giveaway #1)
Make an autumn throw, with the Dresden plate as the moon and make leaves out of the 5.5” X WOF prints, scattering/piling them over the bottom third of the throw. And I would call it Harvest Moon
that blanket is so beautiful i wish i could make one but i live in a small apartment so maybe ill try making a table runner. how many fat quarters do you think ill need . yours is so nice .
The rich colors of your Dresden plate block would be a dazzling point of interest as a throw pillow in my living room. I would use your generous cut off pieces to make additional pillows using your Scattered and Box Block patterns or maybe even a small snuggle quilt for my sewing room.
I would make a chandelier quilt with this collection.
One of your patterns would be great–I live in Nebraska, USA.
I might use the Dresden block to make a great pillow–the fabric would be used in a future quilt. Love seeing your quilt on the bed–so pretty!!
I love this. It is on my quilt bucket list!
If I won I would be torn between making log cabin table runners (by slicing the fabric in half-lengthwise) or table runners with a “braid-quilt” pattern. I just love quilting with batiks because of their hand and the gorgeous colors that you highlighted.
Believe it or not, Batiks and Dresden Plates are my 2 favorites. So, I would definitely make a Dresden Plate quilt. Love your blogs.
What lovely fabrics! i would make a table topper with the dresden plate block and a lap quilt, maybe with ohio star blocks, with the set of fabrics.
That is stunning, Connie. I can’t believe how flat the plates lie with 21 segments. Those fabrics would fit well in my bedroom. Well done!
I knew you’d make beautiful Dresden blocks with Flowing Meadow fabrics! Rusty definitely approves! I would use the fabrics to make a set of table toppers for my elderly friend who I care for…she thinks everything I make is awesome! Gotta love her!
I love the Dresden design and have made a quilt with the dresden pattern. I would love to make another one. I love the challenge and welcome any new patterns or ideas. Thank you.
What a lovely quilt! I think that fabric would make a terrific table runner. Please give Rusty a belated Happy Birthday from me!!
Connie, as always absolutely amazing and beautiful! You are so welcome to come to The Villages! We could sure use you and your ideas !
Florida is counting Iowa today! Just saying! Kati
Good morning,
I would make Dresdon patterns. Mom made one for me with the material of clothes she made for me and my family. It has fallen apart, but I would love to work on one again.
Thank you
Lesa Closson
I LOVE the Dresden quilt you made. It is spectacular and your oldie only made it better! I love batiks, they are so stunning. I think I would do something made with hst to showcase the batiks.
Love the fabrics used in the Dresden quilt – just beautiful! l’d make a table runner or topper. Thanks for the giveaway. So cute that Rusty loves to be your ‘quilt model’ … 🙂

Connie, you are very inspiring with all your projects.
Miss Connie, of all your work l have seen, this Dresden quilt is the most stunning. Wonderful work!
Dawn
Your Dresden plate is beautiful! I love the rich hues in this fabric collection. I would make a guitar quilt for my grandson with this color palette. Gorgeous, masculine hues with such depth and richness.
Very pretty. I think I would do applique with the batiks. Get a theme and go from there.
# 1. I love these Batiks. They are my colors. Your block would make a great pillow for my living room and the other pieces would go into a table runner for my dining room.
#2. I live in Virginia Beach, VA, USA
Your quilt is beautiful! Anything Dresden Plate catches my eye. I would love to make a pillow for my sunroom with your Dresden plate block. It would be so eye catching!!
I could see myself making a rail fence quilt or maybe a disappearing nine patch with these lovely batiks. Your Dresden is beautiful and I enjoy making them too.
I would make a wall hanging. Love batiks.
Your Dresden quilt is really stunning!
Just beautiful, Connie! This is such a pretty collection and makes a great quilt for your bed. I can definitely visualize these colors in a beautiful fall meadow at the height of the season! I think it’s amazing you were able to use 21 blades in some of the blocks! Great job! Tell Rusty I said he makes an excellent quilt model!
Thanks Brenda, I actually redid the 20 blade one so all of the plates have 21 blades. I think I overdid my “scant 1/4”
USA – Pretty quilt and great model. I would love to make a batik bed quilt with black background. I don’t know what pattern, yet.
A wall hanging or small quilt.
The batiks are beautiful. I have always wanted to make a Dresden Plate quilt. How can you go wrong with any quilt pattern, the fabrics will make the pattern sing.
Oh wow – what a great job! I did a different style dresden plate with my embroidery machine – using my dad’s ties.
Love the fabrics — I’m not sure what I would use them for — I have a pretty extensive fabric collection at this point, however, I can always use more!! Thanks for sharing.
I love your dresden plate quilt. The fabrics are gorgeous and I would love to make this for my brother ad sister-in-law or maybe for my sons’s bed. Your work is just gorgeous and I love Rusty. His posing is exceptional. I can see he truly loves it and you.
