I have lots of scrappy quilts and enjoy making them. This is a scrappy baby quilt and I already know who will be getting it.

Scrappy Baby Quilt

This is a great quilt for a charm pack or your scraps. I am using my batik scraps for mine.

Scrappy Baby Quilt With Sunflowers

My sunflowers have been blooming and I thought they looked neat with the scrappy baby quilt behind them. I’m glad I took photos a couple of days ago because yesterday it stormed and rained all day.

31-inches by 36-inches

The quilt measures 31-inches by 36-inches and is a good size for a baby quilt. You can also cut the back from 1 yard of fabric.

The Quilt Blocks

I have lots of batik scraps and this was a great way to use some of them up. The first block uses the following:

  • Cut (3) 2-inch x 3-inch rectangles
  • Cut (1) 2½-inch x 5-inch rectangle
block one

Sew the Pieces Together

Sew with a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Sew the (3) 2-inch x 3-inch rectangles together. Then sew this piece to the 2½-inch x 5-inch rectangle. Your blocks will measure 5-inches x 5-inches unfinished.

The finished size of the blocks in the quilt will be 4½-inches.

Make 28 blocks

  • Cut (28) 2½-inch x 5-inch rectangles
  • Cut (84) 2-inch x 3-inch rectangles
sewing the pieces together

5-inch Squares

The other block is just a 5-inch x 5-inch square. If you have a couple of charm packs this would be great to use.

I originally said one charm pack which isn’t enough, I’m sorry.

  • Cut (28) 5-inch x 5-inch squares

Scrappy Baby Quilt Drawing

  • Make 28 of the plain blocks
  • Make 28 of the pieced blocks

Sew (7) blocks together for each row and make (8) rows.

You can arrange the blocks as shown or turn them any way you like.

More Flowers

If you have a lot of scraps, you could always make a bigger quilt, wouldn’t this be cute for a picnic?

Closeup Of The Batiks

The colors are so vibrant in batiks which is why they are some of my favorite fabrics. You should be able to make a quilt this size with two charm packs.

Hi Connie. Thanks so much for the adorable scrappy baby quilt pattern. I am currently on a mission to use up my scraps and this project was perfect for that. I also used batiks for mine. I wasn’t sure my color selections would work but surprisingly, it turned out great!

    Super cute! Love the colors.

  3. I absolutely love all the colors! Looks like your garden! Bright and shiny! Raining on and off, as in everytime I open the door, it starts raining. Luckily I quilt! Close the drapes and see all the bright and shiny colors of my fabric! Thanks for all the info and pictures!

I LOVE LOVE the scrap baby quilt!!! Thank you for making that so easy to access!!! I have so many scraps to use it would be PERFECT to use for so many of them! Bless you!!!!

  5. Hi there Connie, it seems we are all at the “well-done” stage with the temperature spikes. I prefer the warm weather but we have had nothing but 90+ degree days for the entire month, and that is not typical for our normally temperate climate. I readily admit that I am slogging along in the quilting department and this little scrap quilt is just the ticket for a project I absolutely must get working on! Your batik fabrics remind me of one I made several years ago. I prefer your layout to the pattern I used at that time. Since I just sorted my scrap and left-over fabrics for donation I plan to dig out the charm square collection and go from there.
Now I must add that you are so talented and generous with your patterns and instructions. Thank you!!!!

    1. Thank you Cheryll, I love this little quilt but I did goof saying it could be made with 1 charm pack. You need 2. It could also be made with 1 charm pack and scraps that kind of match the collection. I’m not a fan of hot weather.

Thanks, Connie, for the Scrappy Baby Quilt tutorial.
This is exactly what I want to make. The colour combinations are vibrant and the piecing will be easy to achieve.
I like Beverley’s idea to donate quilts to worthy organisations.
In Australia the Salvation Army has an annual auction of donated goods to raise funds for the great work they do in our communities.

  7. Beautiful baby quilt. This would be a great idea also for charity quilts. Our church sewing group makes baby quilts for the local hospital NICU & also for an orphanage and housing for battered children. A bright quilt like this would surely brighten a child’s life. Enlarging to 36 X 42 for wheelchair quilts for nursing homes. Possibly increasing the block size or add more blocks for Quilts of Valor quilts.

    1. I actually had some 2 x 3 scraps and that is how I picked the size of block to make. I have a habit of doing this when making a scrap quilt. Larger blocks would be great.

  8. Vicki in MN says:

A great scrap buster, thanks Connie! Has it been humid down there too, I could do without that.
