X Block Basix Template Tutorial
This post may contain affiliate links which won’t change your price but will share a commission.I’ve been doing a little cleaning in my studio, and pulled out a bunch of rulers and template that I have. I seem to have a little addiction to them…..anyone else have that problem? In fact, I just got a new one in the mail and…..another one is coming! A year or two ago I bought the Baby X-Blocks template BasiX and never, ever used it! I have no idea why because it makes beautiful blocks very easily.
X Block BasiX Tutorial
There are quite a few sizes of templates to make X Blocks including one that uses 2 ½” strips. I also found another style of X Block templates that is a 7 ½” template, I’m not sure if that is the size of strips or blocks……I might have to get this!

The size of my X Block BasiX mug rug is 7″ x 9″, perfect for a cup of coffee.
I think I’ll go through more of my rulers and templates and use them for a change! If you have the X Block BasiX template I would love to see what you have made with it.

Interesting…..enjoyed the tutorial
Although I do not quilt I love reading your posts every day and seeing all the amazing things you create with fabric. Today’s ruler blocks is very interesting. Someday I may surprise myself and quilt something simple. Maybe…
I haven’t seen that one before. It looks interesting.
I remember when the X-block rulers came out, but I never had one. Now you’ve made me want to put one on my “need to get” list. Your mug rug is sweet! I can see a baby quilt using that template and the 1.5″ strips. I wouldn’t mind that one and the 2.5″ one. I, too, like specialty rulers and templates.
Thanks Miriam and I think I can see the 2.5″ template in my future also 🙂
I have some rulers I’ve never used and I don’t even know what they are for!
know that feeling Pat! Sometimes you can find info online or…..sometime let me know and if I have one of them….I’ll do a tutorial!
I have their 6.5″ template, that used 2.5″ strips. I loved using it and made a few quilts with it.. But it has been a few years since I have used it. Geesh now I just wantta go do that!! I have been a real pill lately with starting way more than I finish. I gotta stop that!
LOL, I get that way too Vicki! Do what I did…….make a small project to get your new start fix!
Connie I bought a couple x blocks rulers when I was at a quilt show and saw all the cool quilts that could be made using them. I only made one so far, but I do have a table runner on my to-do list. Here is the blog posting for my X Block lap quilt: https://patchouli-moon-studio.blogspot.com/2016/02/diamond-jewels-quilt.html
Oh yes I have a lot of rulers too that should be used more!
You sound just like me Daryl! I’m off to check out your post!
This really excited me, because I just finished a quilt using the X block ruler. I wasn’t thrilled with the results – but I love yours. I used the ruler on a 9-patch block, but I like this version better using the strip set. Much less fussy! Thanks for the ideas!!
Thanks Sara! Now I remember seeing blocks made using the X block template and a 9 patch block! Hope you try this, just measure the distance between the two seam lines – add your seam allowance and then cut the strips.
Wow, even a matching coffee cup!
LOL, I love picking up different coffee cups for my mug rugs! Thanks Wanda.
