I always have fun making mug rugs and this is another tiny fabric strips mug rug. This makes a great gift with a coffee cup and a cookie.

I have made several of these before and it was fast and easy to make. The quilting is very simple also!

3 Different Tiny Fabric Strips Mug Rugs

I pulled out a couple of tiny fabric strips mug rugs that I have made. Notice the coleus plants? I started them from seeds and the package was mixed colors so you don’t know what you’ll get. That is a mini fire pit on the table also.

Island Batik Fabrics – Local Motion

I made a quilt with the Local Motion fabric collection from Island Batik and hopefully today I will finish quilting it. I always save the scraps which is why I decided to make another of the strips mug rugs.

How to make the Mug Rug

  • Cut (19-21) 3/4-inch x 5-inch strips of the prints
  • Cut twice as many 3/4-inch x 5-inch strips of a cream batik
  • Add a cream strip to both long sides of the prints
  • Press toward the print

Sew the Teeny Tiny Rows Together

You are working with teeny tiny rows that you will sew together. I started out using a 1/4-inch seam allowance but sometimes my rows weren’t perfect.

It helps to press each row as you go.

Orange Mug Rug

I pulled out my orange Bonfire mug rug to give me an idea of how big I wanted to make this mug rug. You can read about it and I actually did a much better job of piecing it.

Quilting the Mug Rug

Quilting the mug rug is very easy. I just cut a piece of backing and batting a little bigger than my mug rug and then did straight stitching along the rows.

Trim the Fabric Strips Mug Rug

My mug rug was very wonky in size. I just trimmed it to 7-inches by 10-inches and didn’t worry about the rows not being straight. It will still be cute.

Ready for Binding

Some of the rows were almost completely trimmed off.

Add Binding to the Fabric Strips Mug Rug

To make the binding, cut a 2-1/4-inch strip the width of your fabric. Fold length-wise and attach to the front of the mug rug. Then press to the back. I like to machine stitch my binding on the front stitching right next to the binding. I used purple thread.

Matching Coffee Cups

I like shopping at Dollar Tree and picking up coffee cups that match the colors in my mug rugs. Add some cookies and you have a great gift idea.

You can read more about my other tiny strip mug rugs. Mine are all made with batik scraps but you could use any quilt fabrics. If you make one please share it with me.

5-inch charm packs work great too.

Dwarf Peas

I have mentioned that i have been having fun gardening this year. I bought some 25 gallon Grow Bags and placed them along side the back of our house by the patio. I planted Dwarf Peas in this bag and already have pea pods! The plants don’t get very big and don’t need to be supported. I can’t wait to eat them in a salad.
