Only a crazy person like me would go out in 10 degree weather to photograph a quilt.  As soon as I finished putting on the binding I headed outside. It was freezing and there is a thin layer of ice on the Mississippi River……perfect for a quilt picture!

This is a lap quilt made from 12 of the scrappy blocks. I just did a large loop free motion quilting and also some pebbling on the muslin blocks. The pebbling took me a little longer than I thought it would.

You can find the tutorial at Quiltville – Scrappy Trips Around the World and there is a  Flickr Scrappy Trip Along group too.

Today (which was actually Tuesday) it was quiet down by the river….yesterday afternoon after the sun came out some of the ice broke up and it is neat to hear the noise the ice makes. The river is still open in the center and even when it does freeze solid this isn’t a river to go out on.

There is a big sandstone rock by the river and I laid the quilt on it. Don’t worry…..after I took all of these pictures I brought the quilt in and into the washer it went.

I pieced and quilted this on my vintage 15-91 Singer sewing machine.

It always feels so good to get down to the last corner of the quilting.

Here is a closeup of the quilting before I washed the quilt.

After washing and drying it, the quilt almost looks as old as some of the fabrics in it. The size after washing it is 32 x 44.

Between taking my dad to physical therapy and doctor visits I can’t believe I even got this quilted. More physical therapy today. I decided to make this quilt a lap size one for my Dad as he seems to get cold easier when sitting in his chair. Notice Bella is checking out the quilt…..she loves sitting with Dad. I just took this picture this morning….I finished the post last night but hadn’t taken a picture of dad using it and thought it would be fun to share that. The sun is shining this morning but it is cold!

  4. that is cold and look at that ice. I have been seeing lots of people making that quilt. I will have to give it a try one. I really like it.

  5. Your dad looks very happy. The quilting is lovely and so is the frozen river. It looks like shards of glass as it breaks up. I can't imagine the Mississippi River freezing. The stereotype we get in Australia is hot and humid from down South. I used to live on the Murray River, our longest river in Australia. It didn't freeze, but we did get below freezing temps over night in. Tier which would frost our lawns, gardens, cars and sometimes freeze our pipes.

The pictures out by the river really show off the quilt and the beauty of where you live. You dad looks very comfy and with the quilt and Bella settled on him he should stay nice and cosy.

  36. Stella Nemeth says:

The quilt is beautiful. Your father obviously enjoys having it, and the cat.

And your ice has moved East to Pennsylvania. We are in the middle of a storm. Ice last night. A tiny bit of snow. Rain most of the morning but it has just started icing up again.
