Harvest Hues

This month the Island Batik ambassadors were challenged to make a paper pieced quilt using either English paper piecing or foundation paper piecing. I chose to use the foundation paper piecing method to make my Harvest Hues quilt.

Harvest Hues

I received a beautiful collection called Fall Gatherings and I thought the fabrics would make a stunning quilt to have out this fall and for Thanksgiving.

Fall Gatherings

The Fall Gatherings bundle included half yard pieces of 20 different batiks. I also received 2 yard pieces of a light neutral called Grass – Gold Ochre and a dark fabric called Pinecones – Green Turtle.

Separate the Colors

The first thing I did was separate the colors and then pressed each piece with my Oliso iron.

Design a Quilt in Electric Quilt

It has been quite a while since I did any foundation paper piecing so I opened up Electric Quilt 8 and designed a block and quilt. I probably should have done something a little easier but this was supposed to be a challenge.

Foundation Paper Piecing Mess

My quilt studio was a mess while I made this quilt and this drives me crazy, I like things organized.

Notice the pieces lying on my longarm? I tried to make each quilt block with different fabrics and those were the fabrics I hadn’t used yet.

I wanted to use as many fabrics from the collection in my quilt as I could and I actually ended up using all but 2.

Quilt Studio Mess

It is a good thing I have a large table as I used all of it! I had a notebook that I used to write down the sizes I needed to cut my pieces and also to help me keep track of the pieces that were white or a color. I used a white batik for the light color in my blocks.

I drank a lot of coffee during this quilt project! You definitely do not want to skimp when cutting pieces of fabric for foundation piecing. I’m not going to tell you how many times I did this!

Removing the Foundation Paper

When I made the first block, I used a foundation paper that is actually like interfacing. I only had a few sheets so I switched to Carol Doak’s foundation paper which is a newsprint paper and easier to remove. I also used a Schmetz 80/12 Microtex Sharp needle. The mess still drives me crazy!

12 Inch Section of the Harvest Hues Quilt Block

Here is one of the sections. On this quilt block, you can see that it ruffles a bit on the white batiks because I didn’t make sure to do the edge pieces on grain. I then stay-stitched around the edges which I probably shouldn’t have done.

24 Inch Harvest Hues Quilt Block

The Harvest Hues quilt is made from 4 large 24-inch quilt blocks. Each large quilt block is made from 4 sections like this which finish at 12-inches.

I made 2 identical 12-inch blocks for each large quilt block.

Oliso Iron and Tailor Clappers

I used my Oliso iron and Tailor Clappers to press my quilt blocks on my large 22″ x 60″ wool pressing mat.

I use an old office table that has a piece of plywood covered in batting and fabric under the wool pressing mat.

Hobbs Batting

I used Hobbs Heirloom 80/20 Bleach cotton batting and quilted the quilt on my Noltings long arm.

57 Inch Square Quilt

I added a 4½-inch border to make my quilt 57″ x 57″ and I thought this was an interesting way to put on the bed.

Use as a Wall Hanging

Many times I like to hang a quilt on a wall and this is a good size for that.

  2. It’s a beautiful quilt! I love the fabrics too! I don’t have the patience to paper piece. It’s difficult to wrap my brain around it! But I love the results! 🥰♥️

Hi Connie! Your FPP pattern is beautiful! The colors are lovely – it would be pretty done in reds and greens for the holidays also. You are a great ambassador for Island Batiks – your designs really show off their fabrics!

  4. I love the metal triangle template to fold for my prairie points

  5. Hi Connie, Janine from Tasmania, Australia, here. I do a lot of foundation paper piecing, I use a lightweight interfacing for the foundation and leave it in the quilt when finished. It doesn’t make any difference to the quilt, just saves a lot of time and mess not having to remove the paper foundation.
    Regards, Janine

    Miss Connie,
The Harvest Hues FPP quilt is absolutely stunning. Whatever you were determined to create was definitely accomplished. I truly admire and appreciate the creativity and inspiration! It is a shame on my part because l do not quite understand even the basics of FPP and content with figuring out patterns that are simple. Thank you again Miss Connie for sharing your knowledge and skill with myself and other readers/sewists!!

  12. Jean McKinstry says:

What a superb design, never mind the mess, probably the first item I saw was the ” Coffee Mug” . I have used freezer paper for my Mariner’s Compass blocks, and wonder if I could use it for your pattern too?

  13. Pretty, love the fall colors.

  14. Karen Poole says:

Beautiful quilt! I love paper piecing, it gets such great points!

  15. When I was a beginner in quilting (some years ago!) we taped small paper bags to the table to catch our scraps–Now we have all kinds of patterns for pretty scrap catchers and/or organizers–either method works!! Your quilt is beautiful–I have mixed feelings for paper piecing!

  16. It’s very Beautiful and you have a Ton of patience. I never saw how paper piecing was done before and became adventurous a few yrs back… It took me 8 hrs to do the NY block for a project. I’d love to try again one day when I can muster up the determination to try and of course have lots of coffee on hand. Blessings.

  17. Ulrikken A. says:

The most unusual part I have used is probably a wooden bracket, which I have used in place of my clapper!

  18. Gorgeous quilt, Connie! Love the color way!

  19. Connie,
Another beautiful creation. I love the pattern and the fabrics you used. I made a similar pattern in a tablerunner. I believe it was a Cut Loose pattern. I find paper-piecing to be time consuming but beautiful results like your quilt. I use a 1.5 Stitch length to make the paper easier to remove. Thank you for the block. I may try another runner using this block.
Have a blessed Mother’s Day and also to all your subscribers who have helped children in some way.

  20. Vicki in MN says:

Oh my I love every single thing about your newest quilt! I like sewing on the paper but I dislike tearing it off!

  21. The tailors clapper. I get alot of comments about it at quilting retreats.

  22. Wow! That is gorgeous, Connie. The fabrics are beautiful and you did such a great job on the assembly. Those colors are great for fall, but would be pretty any time of the year.

  23. Beautiful quilt. I love Fall colors. Thanks for the PP pattern. Thanks for the tip about grain line. I like PP for the fact that I can sew an accurate straight line. Removing the papers, not so much :-).

  24. Connie, your quilt is beautiful. I love the colors and you did such a great job. I won’t even try doing the paper quilting. Thanks for sharing.

  25. I hate paper piecing, but your quilt is gorgeous! I have been reading your blog for a long time and I am so glad you are still blogging.

  26. Your quilt is wonderful and, for me, I’ve found that foundation piecing is the best way to get pointy points and seams that meet. The worst part is tearing away the paper, so I’ve been practicing with using freezer paper, folding the section, and stitching alongside that fold. And I appreciate your tip about making sure the outside edges are on the straight of grain – makes sense!
