I’m guest posting on AccuQuilt’s blog and sharing a tutorial for the place mats and a table topper there but I also have information below so you can make this even if you don’t have a AccuQuilt Go!
The place mats finish at 12″ x 18″ and the table topper is 17″ square
To create the tutorial I used the following:
- GO! Big Electric Fabric Cutter
- GO! #55164 Churn Dash 9″ die – which creates a whole block with just one die
- GO! #55111 10″ x 10″ mat
- GO! #55164 1″, 1 ½″, and 2″ inch Strip Cutter
- GO! #55113 6″ x 24″ mat
- GO! #55017 2 ½ Strip Cutter
- GO! 10″ x 24″ mat
It was warm enough outside to take a picture but…..too cold to eat out there! Hard to believe it is December!
Christmas is just a few weeks away and I thought it would be fun to share a fast and easy tutorial for making place mats and a center piece.
The place mats finish at 12″ x 18″ and the center piece is 17″ square.
½ yard – Red
¾ yard – Green
¼ yard – Christmas print
¼ yard – White print
1 yard – backing
Cut your fabrics a little wider than the area on the die that you will cut.
Use a ¼ inch seam allowance.
Each Churn Dash block consists of:
- 4 – half square triangles of the Christmas print
- 4 – half square triangles of the White print
- 4 – rectangles of the Red print
- 4 – rectangles of the White print
- 1 – square of the White print
To make four place mats and a center piece cut the following:
- 20 – half square triangles of the Christmas print
- 20 – half square triangles of the White print
- 20 – rectangles of the Red print
- 20 – rectangles of the White print
- 4 – square of the White print
Sew the pieces together as shown below. Press your seams to the dark fabric.
If you don’t have the 9″ AccuQuilt Churn Dash die you can still make the place-mats and table topper.
For each block you will need the following:
4 – 3 ½″ green/white half square triangles
1 – 3 /2″ white square
4 – 2 x 3 ½″ white rectangles
4 – 2 x 3 ½″ red rectangles
Each block will have 4 – half square triangle blocks – cut 2 – 4 inch squares of white and the green print. Lay the white one on top with the right sides facing each other. Draw a line down the center of the square. Stitch ¼″ on each side, cut on center line and press. Square each piece up to 3 ½″.
Cut the following pieces according to the measurements.
Use the green fabric for the border around the place mats.Cut 2 inch strips using the GO! #55164 1″, 1 ½″, and 2″ inch Strip Cutter.
Add the following for each place mat:
- 2 – 2″ x 9 ½″
- 2 – 2″ x 12 ½″
For the center piece I cut the border from the red fabric. You will need the same size as you used for the place mats only in red.
- 2 – 2″ x 9 ½″
- 2 – 2″ x 12 ½″
After the border you will add 2 – 2″ strips and 2 – 1 ½″ strips (I forgot to take a picture when I was making the place mats sorry….this photo shows red instead of green. Just reverse the colors.
Here are the place mats with the strips added on one side.
When making the center piece use the same amount of strips but put 1 – 1 ½″ and 1 – 2″ on each side.
Using the GO! #55017 2 ½″ Strip Cutter, add a 2 ½″ x 17″ strip of the Christmas print to the top and bottom.
Layer place mats and center piece with batting and backing. Quilt as desired.
I also used the 2 ½″ strip cutter for the bindings.
I hope you have fun following the quilted Christmas Dash Table Topper and Placemats Tutorial!
