Another Three by Three quilt block table topper in just two colors

Sometimes I have so much fun using up the leftovers from a previous quilt project! I had just a little bit of the dark pink/red batik so I thought I would make the Three by Three table topper again using just two colors.

Since it is getting close to Valentine’s Day, I thought another pink table topper would be fun to make. Many times my quilt project ideas come to me as I am working with the fabrics I have on hand, I always enjoy working out of my Island Batik stash.

I had just a little bit of the dark pink/red batiks left and decided it was too small of an amount to add back into my pink stash. At the same time I wasn’t ready to cut it into 2½” squares and once I figured out I could get nine 2½” x 6½” rectangles, I knew what I’d make!

This is the same easy quilt block that I made in the Three by Three quilt block tutorial. Be sure to sew using a ¼” seam allowance.

Cutting:

  • 9 – 2½” x 6½” rectangles
  • 18 – 2½” x 6½” rectangles

This table topper is very easy to layout, just turn every other block so you get a design like this and sew the blocks together. I like to press my seams toward the side that doesn’t have the seams from the three pieces.

Sew the rows together.

I decided I like the look of the floating dark pink/red pieces so I thought I would add a 2½” border.

Why did I choose 2½”? I was getting low on the pink batik and wanted to make sure I had enough for the binding first. It was going to take at least 3 – 2½” x WOF strips for the binding. Once I had that I cut the rest into the strips for my border.

I used the same pink Aurifil thread for my quilting and also did the same wiggle lines and stippling that I did on the Three by Three Table Topper. I also used Hobbs Heirloom batting. I don’t use a template or ruler to make my squiggles….they are uneven  and “organic”. I love that term!

Follow my machine binding tutorial to easily add the binding to the table topper.

This is another Pelly approved quilt project! I can’t wait to uncover our deck furniture so I don’t have to look at that gray cover outside my window!

Which quilt project do you like best? The rectangle table topper using three colors or the square topper using two? I can see a quilt made with all different colors using the two colors and a cream background.

Well, Connie, a pattern that even I could do! And a pretty one too.

Hello Connie, Right now…I prefer it with the three fabrics. I believe that is due to the fact that I have been considering the Rail Fence as one of my choices for my next baby quilts. It is a very difficult choice to make as to which I prefer, so the best solution would be to do as you have and just make one with two fabrics and another with three fabrics! Two for the price of one, as the saying goes. LOL. I hope you are also!!! Aside from both of these lovely table toppers, I also enjoyed following the links you provided for some older posts. They in turn led to several more older posts. I may be “clicking” and “pinning” for quite awhile on your blog today, Carole. You are an excellent quilter and designer. Seeing some of the quilts and other projects you have created and designed throughout the years is quite a bit of fun for me. So thank you for sharing and have a splendid day!

I love the colors of course and both are nice. My thing would be that depending on what is on top of it-lamp, flower arrangement, fruit bawl, etc will determine how it is displayed and if the pattern is noticeable or detailed could be hidden…. Looking back I like the square. :My mom wants “doilies” for her dresser for Christmas which will be place mat sizes and she needs 4 this is giving me some ideas. 🙂 Thanks.

It’s amazing how different this looks with only 2 colors. Great choice of colors.
