Spinning Star Quilt Block Tutorial
The Spinning Star quilt block is made from a combination of quarter-square triangles, half-square triangles and squares, have you ever made one? It is a very easy block to make and can be used in so many ways.
I dug into my Island Batik Ambassador scraps and pulled out some red, white & blue batiks.
Directions to make one 12.5″ block
Step 1 – Cutting :
- White fabric: Cut four 4 ½″ squares
- White fabric: Cut one 5 ¼” square – cut it diagonally twice to make 4 quarter square triangles
- Blue fabric: Cut one 4 ½″ square
- Blue: Cut one 5 ¼″ square – cut it diagonally twice to make 4 quarter square triangles
- Red fabric: Cut two 4 7/8″″ squares – cut each in half diagonally to make a total of 4 half square triangles
Sew with a ¼” seam allowance
This is a basic 9 patch quilt block and is simple to make.
Piece your white and blue quarter square triangles together as shown, press to the dark quarter square triangle.
Pair the quarter square sections with the red half square triangles, piece and press toward the red half square triangle.
The Spinning Star quilt block uses 4 of these which should each measure 4 ½” square.
Layout your pieces as shown below.
Sew the pieces together in rows.
You now have a beautiful Spinning Star quilt block!

A long time ago I made this Stars Along the river table topper out of 3 inch Spinning Star blocks and never wrote up a pattern for it. If you like it let me know and I’ll work on it.
Make as many of the spinning star quilt blocks as you like. I have made 2 and will make a small tablerunner that will be perfect for the 4th of July, Memorial Day or Labor Day. Hopefully I’ll get it quilted today and show it to you tomorrow.
You may have noticed that my Spinning Star quilt block pieces were cut with my AccuQuilt GO! cutter. I also used the 8″ AccuQuilt GO! Qube die set which has all of the shapes for this block. It takes no time at all to cut out your fabric using this method.
