Mini Rail Fence quilted tablerunner for Independence Day

Mini string tablerunner in red white and blue tutorial

Looking for a fast and easy quilted tablerunner that you can use for the 4th of July and then keep out the rest of the year? This mini rail fence quilted tablerunner would be perfect!

Rail Fence Mini Table Runner for Independence Day

I recently shared several quilt projects that I have done that are perfect for the 4th of July or Independence Day.

This little mini table runner or table mat is so fast and easy to make! I had forgotten about it until I went through my quilt stash and found it.

This is a very simple quilt project to make and just uses just one charm square pack. You’ll also need fabric for the binding and backing. I originally shared this post in July of 2012, it is hard to believe that 7 years have gone by! I have updated it with some new photos and info.

If you decide to make this, you’ll have enough blocks for a bigger tablerunner. I used a 2½” x 5″ charm pack, I don’t think these are available anymore.String mini quilt tablerunner for Independence Day

Super fast quilt project

  • Take your charm squares and cut each piece into 1¼” x 5″ strips
  • Sew them together in groups of 6
  • Trim the pieces to 4¼” squares
  • Sew rows together

I don’t have any photos of the blocks before I pieced and quilted it. I made it 4 blocks by 3 blocks and used 72 pieces.

You could make this any size you want just by adding more fabrics. You could also cut your strips into wider or longer pieces, there is so much you can do with string blocks.

I used a 2¼ inch binding that came from my oldies stash and did a little free motion wiggle quilting on it. The dark blue fabric matched perfectly.

I have an easy binding tutorial that you might enjoy reading before you add your binding. I always like adding my binding to any quilt project by machine.

This was a fast project and could also be a great way to use up scraps from your stash. I hope you have enjoyed the 4th of July Table Topper tutorial.

My college age granddaughter wanted to learn to quilt but was only going to be home for 2 weeks. I found your directions for this and suggested this be her project. It was perfect! It had all the steps and was
do-able in her time frame. She did a great job and was very happy with the end product.

Hello Connie; I would have had a hard time cutting those pretty fabrics up like you did. Yet, they did make a very nice Table Topper that could be used all year long. It has been such a long time since I have done a strip project such as this, it would be a fun project to do indeed. LOL…stop tempting me with all of these fabulous projects you create! LOL. Thank you so much for sharing all of these great projects and links! Have a great day!
