The Falling Charms block is an updated version of a post I did in 2013 after watching a video by Jenny from Missouri Star Quilt Co. It is hard to believe that 5 years have gone by!
Recently someone posted a comment on my post and as I went back and looked at my post, I couldn’t remember if I ever finished the quilts!
This is the photo that I had in my post, I was making two quilts for my granddaughters and I used a 10″ layer cake that I cut into 5″ squares.
Below is some of the info that I had on that post.
One quilt is 70 x 52 and the other is 64 x 52. I am out of the fabrics so I will need to add borders to them.
I have a feeling once these are quilted, washed and dried they will look like old antique quilts. There is only one block used in this quilt.
In the video 2 1/2 inch strips are used and strip pieced but I thought you might like to see what size to cut individual pieces.
After I read my post, I started wondering if I had ever finished the quilts. I have a stack of unfinished quilts downstairs but I decided to take a look in my “quilt storage area”.
Believe it or not, I found one of them, I then looked in my UFO stack but can’t find the 2nd one. Maybe I finished it and it has been gifted!
I try and refold and straighten everything in here once a month but sometimes times gets away from me.
I recently donated 2 quilts and 2 tablerunners for a benefit that is coming up for a young girl with cancer and didn’t put everything back neatly.
I was right about the quilt looking like an antique quilt after being washed and dried.
Here is the quilt outside on the deck. I put a really large border on this…..like 10 inches!
I put it on the twin bed in the spare room, still no pictures on the wall. The design is 8 block x 11 blocks.
I want to share the cutting for two different sizes of this block, I think I have some new batiks that would be perfect for the larger size blocks.
- 5″ square scrappy color
- 2 ½” x 5″ background color
- 2 ½” x 7″ background color
How about super sizing the block for a big, fast and easy quilt!
- 9 ½″ square scrappy color or a layer cake
- 5 ½” x 9 ½″ background color
- 5 ½” x 14 ½″ background color
This diagram will show you what the quilt will look like when you add more 7″ blocks.
Update: I had someone ask about the amount needed for the background fabric – this estimate is taken from my Electric Quilt file
43″ x 50″ quilt made with thirty 7″ blocks and a 4″ border
Cream – 1 yard
Border – 1½ yards
66″ x 87″ quilt made with eighty-eight 7″ blocks and a 5″ border
Cream – 3 yards
Border – 2½ yards
82″ x 96″ quilt made with thirty 14″ blocks and a 6″ border
Cream – 4 yards
Border – 2½ yards
I have also created a PDF with the quilt block sizes and also a black & white diagram that you can fill in and download. Sign up for my newsletter and receive this and many other free resources.
