Modern Batik Baby Quilt

Modern Batik Challenge Baby Quilt EmbersOnce again I am sharing a project that I made for my June Island Batik Ambassador challenge. This month we were to make a modern batik baby quilt. Island Batik Ambassador modern batik challenge

I had this fun bundle of the Paisley Dot Brights collection that I thought would make a sweet little baby quilt. I happened to watch a video last week called Embers Quilt by Rob from Man Sewing and thought it would be the perfect quilt to make with this bundle.

Island Batik Paisley Dot Brights fabricsIt is always so much fun to open up a new package of strips and create something from the beautiful batiks.Island Batik Paisley Dot Brights fabricsYou’ll have to take a look at Rob’s video and see the colors he chose for his quilt.
Creating rows of batik pieces quilt

This is one of those designs that looks completely different depending on the colors and fabrics you use. I really liked making groups of 4 rows of strips for the design.

Next I added the strips of cream batik to the rows. I actually really like this design right now!Cream Batik added to quilt strips

The rows were then cut into squares – wild and crazy batik squares!Scrappy Quilt Squares Baby Quilt

I cut up 2 rows of the strips into blocks and then arranged them on my design wall. It was at this point that I realized I really didn’t like the Embers design in my bright batiks. Time to move on to plan B.Scrappy batik quilt blocksI had plenty of the Paisley Dot pink batik and I just adding some sashing to break up the blocks and then added a border at the top and bottom to make a nice size baby quilt.Adding borders to the scrappy batik quilt

Adding the pink batik really softened the look of the blocks and once quilted made a sweet little baby quilt.

It’s always good to be able to abandon the original plan when it simply isn’t working for you. This quilt shows what the kind of great things that can happen when you do.

Hello Connie; I think this is a lovely baby quilt. I have never moved toward the Modern designs but I do love to see what others make when they create a Modern quilt. I am looking forward to seeing what else you have created with the other panels. I sure wish I was as creative as you are. Thank you so much for sharing all of your fabulous designs, projects and pictures!! Have a fabulous day!
