Heart Baby Quilt Tutorial
25″ x 32″
Everyone seems to get in the mood to clean in January, I know I do!
While sorting through things in my quilt studio I came across a box of batik fabric cut into HSTs and a couple of blocks that were already made.
I think I started this a year….or two ago and obviously didn’t get it done before Valentine’s Day so….I put it away.
Many times I mix batiks with regular quilt fabric or muslin and I never have a problem. I remember this neutral background….I think I had a bolt of it but unfortunately…it is all gone.
I had 5 blocks finished which would have made a table runner but I already have several table runners that work perfectly for Valentine’s Day so I decided a sweet little baby quilt would be fun to make and use up my fabric.
Heart Baby Quilt Tutorial Instructions
Fabric:
- 3/4 yard of background neutral
- 4 or 5 batik fat quarters reds/purple/pink
- 1 fat quarter for the binding
- 1-yard backing and batting
Directions:
From the neutral and batiks:
- Cut 2 7/8″ squares and then cut diagonally for your HST pieces (half square triangle)
- Cut 2 1/2″ squares
- Cut 8 – 1 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ strips of neutral for the sashing
Each block will be made with the following:
- 12 HSTs that are neutral and batik
- 2 – 2 1/2″ squares neutral
- 2 – 2 1/2″ squares batik
Blocks will be 8 1/2″x 8 1/2″ unfinished

I actually used my AccuQuilt Big Electric Cutter and the 8″ Qube die set to cut out my pieces.
All 12 blocks are made the same other than turning the center 4 HSTs for a different look.
Make 6 blocks like this
Make 6 more blocks like this
I just made up a bunch of HSTs and didn’t really worry about the placement of the batik colors. I used Aurifil thread for my piecing and quilting.
Layout your blocks and add the 1 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ neutral strip between the blocks.
Sew your rows together (you don’t add strips between the rows).
Add your backing and binding. Quilt as desired and add your binding.
Need a bigger quilt….just make more blocks! Three in a row would make a beautiful table runner.

Another quilt I want to make!!! Love all your quilts and posts and this is a definite to make. You are very creative!!
There is nothing I don’t love about this sweet quilt! The low volume background adds such a nice level of interest and your quilting is sooooo sweet! The wobbles in the hearts give the quilt a sort of child feel to it, like they were drawn by a small child which I think is perfect. I’ve been thinking about trying Sulky threads – do you know if their rayon thread is recommended for garment sewing?
Hi Connie! I hope you are doing well. This came up in my email feed today. I thought, huh – I remember this and then I saw it was from your blog. It’s still a great quilt and just perfect for this time of year. Hope all is well with you. {{Hugs}} ~smile~ Roseanne
Lovely! I think I will make it for my daughter in a bigger size.
That heart quilt will be perfect for my grand daughter! She loves pink (who doesn’t?).
I really appreciate all of your great tips and tutorials, thank you!!!
Thank you so very much for all of your tips and patterns, i started quilting back in 2004, then left it for a while as had to find full time work and so that meant go back to study as my children were going through High School and University. So i had to put my love of sewing on hold. Now i have joined a local community quilting group who are like me plodders as we learnt to quilt years ago but with determination and encouragement i soon loved quilting sometimes i find it challenging but your website and your assistance with step by step has inspired me to complete all my projects that i had started years ago so thank you again Connie it is very much appreciated i do mainly Night Duty now part-time and when i can’t sleep i sew or should i say quilt, so my thanks go to you. xx
Am I ever glad I stumbled across your site…you have some great patterns…love the heart one and all your patterns in your secret library…thank you so much for being so generous. hugs
