Today I am sharing a mug rug that is a perfect gift to give for Galentine’s Day! What is Galentine’s Day? It is celebrated on February 13th and is all about female friendship. Celebrate with your best girlfriends and share this Galentine’s Day Mug Rug tutorial.
I just received my first Island Batik ambassador box the other day and there were 5 beautiful fat quarters of fabric that could be used to make a Galentine’s Day mug rug or postcard. I had some batiks leftover from other Island Batik projects that I made last year and I went ahead and made up my little Galentine’s Day mug rug and tutorial early. I have links below for the other quilt projects I made with the Cherry Berry collection.
This is our first project to share as a Island Batik Ambassador this year. It is going to be so much fun to see all of the beautiful Galentine’s Day mug rugs and postcards!
Be sure and take a peek at my Galentine’s Day Mug Rug tutorial that I made last year. I even have a cute little free printable card you can download!

I used my AccuQuilt GO! 6″ Qube and new AccuQuilt GO! 6″ Qube Angle Companion dies to make my Galentine’s Day mug rug but it could easily be made without them.If you have the AccuQuilt 6″ Qube dies, you will use the following:
- #55705 – 1 1/2″ Finished Half Square Triangle
- #55702 – Square 2″ (1 1/2″ finished)
- #55758 – Kite center 3″ finished square
Rotary Cutting Directions
- Cut 3 – 2″ squares
- Cut 3 – 2 7/8″ squares – then cut diagonally for your half square triangles
- Cut 1 each of Triangle in a Square sides
- Cut 2 – 2″ squares
- Cut 2 – 2 7/8″ squares – then cut diagonally for your half square triangles
- Cut 1 – 2″ squares
- Cut 1 – 2 7/8″ square – then cut diagonally for your half square triangles
- Cut 1 – Kite center
I have included a downloadable file with the templates for the Kite block – Galentines Mug Rug Templates
The following diagrams will help you piece the blocks for the Galentine’s Day mug rug.
Use a 1/4″ seam allowance and press your seam open.
Your block will be 6 1/2″ square.
I added a 3″ x 6 1/2″ piece of neutral to the left side where my coffee or wine will go. I didn’t take a photo but I also added a 2″ strip to the right side.
I used my Aurifil threads for my free-motion quilting that I do on my vintage 15-91 Singer sewing machine. I’m getting low on a couple colors. The neutral I used for the background is actually a very light pink #2405. The orange spools are cotton 50WT and the pink is a cotton 40WT. Both weights of thread worked great for my quilting.
After the quilting I trimmed my Galentine’s Day mug rug to 6 1/2″ x 10 1/2″ and added my binding. Mug rugs can be any size.
This is the background I used for my Galentine’s Day mug rug, it is the same one I used on my mug rug last year. Last year I used it to make a cute little thread basket for my Aurifil threads.
This little Galentine’s Day mug rug is also perfect for Valentine’s Day. I’ll use the new batiks for another project.
Mug Rugs are perfect for wine!
If you don’t drink coffee think about using a mug rug for….wine. I hope you have enjoyed this Galentine’s Day Mug Rug Tutorial!
