Alpine Ice Snowflakes Quilt Tutorial

Tutorial for the Alpine Ice quilt with snowflakesBeing an Island Batik ambassador means I get to work with beautiful batiks and create fun projects to share with you. This week we are showing the Winter collections from Island Batik and today the collection I used for my quilt is Alpine Ice.

Alpine Ice Snowflakes Quilt Tutorial

36″ x 50″

This is a beautiful collection that seems to change colors in my photos. I first made a quilt for Fall Quilt Market using the darker fabrics in this collection which I considered blacks but are actually very dark blues. There are also brighter blues in the Alpine Ice collection.

Just before Christmas we got our first snowfall and it was perfect for taking photos of my quilt. I had a lot of fun designing this quilt and will be making it in a larger size in different batiks soon and will share it soon.Alpine Ice Snowflakes Quilt Tutorial on steps

Alpine Snowflakes Block Tutorial

Block size – 15 ½” unfinished

For each block you will need:

  • 4 – cream 5 ½” squares
  • 24 – 3″ print squares (4 will be used for the snowflake corners)

Step One

  1. Mark a diagonal line on a 3″ print square.
  2. place it on the corner of the cream block and stitch on the line.
  3. Fold back the 3″ print and trim.
  4. Make 4 per block.

Alpine Ice blocks

Step Two:

  1. Sew 5 4-patch blocksAlpine Snowflakes 4 patch blocks
  2. Use the following diagram to layout the rows.
    Alpine Ice block sections
  3. Sew the rows together.

Make 6 blocks

Making the quilt: – sew the blocks together.

I used my AccuQuilt GO! and the GO! Holiday Medley Snowflake to add a little sparkle to my quilt. I added Heat n Bond Lite to my batik fabric before running it through the die. You could cut the snowflakes by hand but trust me……it is a lot faster with the AccuQuilt GO! die!

Cut out 6 Snowflakes – cut as follows:

  • 2 complete snowflakes
  • 6 half snowflakes
  • 4 quarter snowflakes

Alpine Ice AccuQuilt snowflakes
Carefully peel off the backing paper and attach the snowflakes to the background sections as shown. Applique as desired, I prefer to do a free-motion wiggle stitch on the raw-edge applique.Alpine Ice AccuQuilt snowflakes on quilt

Add I used my vintage 15-91 Singer for all of my piecing, free-motion applique and quilting.

It is always fun to share a photo of the back of a quilt, the little trees in this print made a perfect backing for my Alpine Snowflakes quilt.Alpine Snowflakes backing

I do appreciate a yellow and grey palette. I also love a purple-aqua-white combo. I also do a lot of red and black with yellow–hey, it’s a firefighter thing!

There is so much beautiful fabric out there that for me it is hard to just stick to the same colors all the time. What a perfect setting to show your new Alpine Snowflakes … in the bedroom then right out into the snow! Your pieced sections along with the fabric design gives a knit-sweater look IMHO.

I’ve never done a grey’ish quilt like this one, but I do like it. It seems that blues and greens creep into my quilts a lot. However, this last year, it seemed that red predominated. Guess that I am give equal-opportunity for quilt colours!

Wow, that quilt didn’t go together anything like how I thought it would! But it is lovely, and it’s the ONLY kind of snowflake I want to see!! I gravitate toward the ocean-y colors, turquoise, aqua, teal, purple, a bit of lemon green, bright coral and sandy brown thrown in. I guess living by the seashore will do that to a girl. So, I bet I could find a use for those blues you have left over!!

    Big hugs!

I follow you by email and have always loved doing scrappy quilts. Yet, recently, I have been making them in a much more balanced scrappiness manor. I truly do not have a favorite color for making a quilt in. I try and make the quilt in what I feel the person receiving the quilt would like if I do not know I choose a colorway that I have not done in awhile. Thank you for sharing and for the great giveaway! Have a fantastic day!
